A very, very cheap company and trading almost below its BV and almost below its cash value as well. They are very highly tuned to the capital market, particularly the Junior markets in terms of technology and resources. He really doesn’t know why investors are not appreciating the stock. It has high leverage to capital markets, a great balance sheet, and great earnings potential if things go well, and as these finances come back, their leverage on investment banking fees and advisory work is very, very big. Good company.

It is a consumer discretionary stock.  The heavy snow in the Maritimes prevented people from getting out and buying cars.  The stock also suffered from the oil price because of western Canada exposure.  It has some corporate governance issues in that the former CEO who is now the chairman also owns a number of dealerships outside of ACQ-T and some lands that used to be leased from him for dealerships.

This was a bad call on his part. Had been invested in this for a long time, but finally threw up his hands and gave up in December for tax loss selling. Has a lot of exposure to Fort Murray. He probably would have ridden out the storm, but one of the things working against them, even before oil prices started to correct, was that they just kept coming back to the market and tapping capital markets for either convertible debentures or for equity. Sometimes management just gets too capital happy.

There hasn’t been any specific news to explain why this has dropped from $25 down to $17 since August. The most likely reason is because people are concerned because the economy is starting to slow down. This company is a sub prime lender and unsecured subprime lenders are in very dangerous position for default. About 12% of their business is in Alberta. However, the rest of their business should actually benefit from lower oil prices because it will give people higher cash flows to make payments.

Energy. For every winner from oil, there is a loser, in Canada particularly. The redistributive effect of low gasoline prices, particularly for the working poor in the US, is bigger than any policy that the Obama administration has managed to pass in 6 years. In other words, this is putting more spendable cash in the pockets of poor to middle income families in the US, which is going to be used for consumer spending, and is not going to end up in Saudi Arabia or Venezuela or Iran. This is highly positive.

Markets.  Guest reviewed The 10 Market Rules to Remember from Bob Ferrell

1.  Markets tend to return to the mean over time.  Look at the insanity right now.  It always becomes sane again.  The price of oil will not go down forever.

2.  Excesses in one direction lead to opposite excesses in the other direction.  Greed turns into fear.  Oil has probably overshot in its correction.  Investors must be patient.

3.  There is no era, so excesses are never prominent.  We all think we are smarter than the market.  But the market has a mind of its own.  We will never understand it.

4.  Exponential rapidly rising or falling markets usually go further than you think, but never go sideways.  The market will come back to the 200 day moving average.

5. The public buys the most at the top and the least at the bottom.  He does not believe in selling oil stocks right here.  If we learn nothing else today, independent thinking will always outperform the herd mentality.

6.  Fear and greed are stronger than long term resolve.  We need to have a plan.  Somehow we need to put fear and greed on the back burner and focus on the situation at hand.

7.  Markets are strongest when they are broad and weakest when they narrow to a few blue chip names.  Try to understand where the market as a whole is right now and where a particular stock fits in.  60% of the move of a security is based on the move of the market as a whole.

8.  Bear markets have three stages: Sharp Downturn, Reflexive Rebound, and a Drawn Out Fundamental Downturn.  If we are going into a bear market in oil, you will still see a rebound here.  But this is how bear markets get started.  He doesn’t believe we are going into a bear market for oil, however.

9. When all the experts and forecasters agree, then something else will happen.  Interest rates were supposed to go up this year, but they fell.

10.  Bull markets are more fun than bear markets unless you are short.

Bond ETF's or individual corporate bonds held to maturity? The basic problem here is that ETF's do not mature. When he advocates ladders, they get individual bonds and they know when their money is going to come due, exactly how much and when. With an ETF, you are at the mercy of the market. He feels you are better off with individual bonds.

2% MER. This is high for an ETF? That is really high and he questions if it is really 2%. It has done well.

Stock vs. Stock.  SU-T vs. TOU-T.  TOU-T is mostly Gas.  Gas will have more volatility.  FCG-T is a better way to play gas.

Are large indoor malls dying? There is a question as to what are our shopping habits going to be in the future. He doesn't think the mall is dead. People are not going to sit at their computers and shop all day. Shopping is a community experience, so they are going to continue to go to these areas. It is the smaller, secondary, tertiary areas that are going to be difficult. There is also a certain amount of re-tenanting that is going to have to happen. Certain stores are just not going to survive the Internet age, but they will be replaced.

(Altagas (ALA-T) or Emera (EMA-T) as a core stock for the long-term with a growing and sustainable dividend?) Names like this have grown very strongly. He would think the value is in this company rather than Altagas.
