Is it prudent to put US ETF’s or US stocks in a TFSA? He doesn’t recommend putting US stocks into TFSA’s because of certain advantages being lost because of the dividend.

He likes this. A bit of a rollup. They are buying portions of medical practices in the US, and then are installing anaesthesiologists to do anaesthetic services. The valuation is running up a bit, but if you are looking at Enterprise Value to a bit of multiple, it is about 16X. Still a bit pricey, but nothing too crazy. He likes that they are offering liquidity to doctors, who are starting to age and want to get some cash out of the business. Good insider ownership. Worth owning, but you might want to average into it.

A well-managed company. It is unique, but over the last few years seafood sales in the US have struggled. It seems that when the US$ goes up, the price of seafood goes up also. Consumption per capita doesn’t seem to be going up in the US on seafood, even though it is healthier. Thinks it is going to tread water for a while. Not expensive, but quite volatile. You may want to buy when it has a bad quarter.

*Short* This is sort of a mini conglomerate. They have a bunch of small regional airlines in Canada, as well as an aviation leasing business in the US, along with some small manufacturing businesses in Canada. This is what he would call “an access to Canada short” in that the underlying businesses do not generate enough cash to sustain the company as a whole. Subsequently they need to continue coming back to the market doing equity issue after equity issue. All the industries that they operate in are high capital intensive businesses. Just in CapX alone they have outspent their cash flow way, way back. Yet they pay a dividend yield of 5.34% and have a debt they have to service. If there was any market downturn and equity markets were actually shut off to this sort of constant equity issuance, the dividend would be in very, very serious trouble. (Analysts’ price target is $47.)

Educational Segment: Market Drawdowns. What he calls “market noise” is a 5% correction or less. He looked at the peaks and the lowest lows in a 4-year business cycle since 1920. Looking at the drawdowns over the years, you can see the great depression, where 86% was the drawdown in US large caps. We’ve had several in the 50% range. However, the average surprisingly was 13.4%, and the average was only 10 months long. You tend to get a 5%-13% correction at least once a year, so it is pretty normal to get volatility in the markets. Drawing down a little further, he has a one-year version, which shows that we get more frequent declines. The interesting thing is, if we are down 13.4% from the previous peak, and we look out one year knowing that the bear decline is about 10 months, this is the time to start investing, to get aggressive once the markets are down. Your forward returns go up exponentially from a low point, compared to putting money to work at a high point. We are probably due for a downturn that is going to be about 24% at some point in the next year or 2, so he is playing defence because of that. Once we are down 13.4%, he’ll be thinking about buying.

Interest rates. The Fed will raise interest rates this week. Friday’s payroll was pretty decent, so there is no room for them not to go. Three rate hikes are pretty much priced in to the Fed Fund’s curve out to the end of the year. If we go into Europe and European elections, Netherlands actually starts this week, but we are really looking at the French election as the key one, April 23-May 7. If Marie Le Pen wins the election, that is going to be very destabilizing globally, far more than BREXIT, far more than the US election, and far more than the Italian election. We haven’t seen any impact from British breaking trade agreements with the EU, other than the weakening of the British pound. If France decides to leave the EU, and it goes back to the French franc, the whole European project begins to come apart. BREXIT was a warning shot across the bow, and this would be breaking it apart. If it is not this one, maybe it is the Italian election, sometime within the next year. If one of these goes extreme right wing it is going to start falling apart. That is what he is really worried about. The US economy, for all its ills, is still the strongest economy in the world. The restructuring that Trump is trying to put into place should be very, very good in the long run. There is lots of execution risk. We are now hearing Congress may not go for these trade deals, it has to be revenue neutral for tax cuts, etc., thus execution risk for the next couple of quarters We just have to be cautious on the markets.

Oil. Hedge funds may be a bit too long on oil. Tom McClellan points out that the “net short” position of the commercials, the opposite side of the speculators, are very net short; in fact, the most “net short” since oil was over $100, and they are the smart money. The speculators are on the other side of this trade. There is probably some more downside to go here. It could push oil down to the low $40s, as those positions unwind. $40-$60 is probably the range for the next couple of years.

They have lots of compliance and corporate governance in place. If you are a 3-5 year investor, and you get a selloff like this, it is probably an opportunity. However, he wouldn’t add a full position today, but would probably add some today and look at adding some down the road.

Has a huge advantage over everybody else. It is more cost efficient for people to buy these buses, because if you look at the 40 foot buses that are out there, they are driving around fairly empty after peak hours. The US is spending a lot more money in this area in terms of municipalities. This has medical office buildings in other parts of the world like Brazil, Australia, New Zealand. There are a lot of cross currency issues. Has a relatively high payout ratio. He prefers other names in terms of risk/reward.

Retail focused, but it owns a lot of Yorkville and assets in areas of high income. They came out with a perfect quarter, raised guidance, and the stock dropped 5%, so he was buying aggressively that day. This is a rare opportunity to buy a very high quality high end retail at a very reasonable price. Yield of 4.31%. (Analysts’ price target is $23.81.)

(Market Call Minute.) This has been a bit of a disaster story. There are management credibility issues. 8.5% dividend yield. He would be watching this to see what happens next. It could get interesting.

Reporting in a short while, and is not seen anything to get too excited about, or what the catalyst is besides higher rates. Not his favourite space. In pure insurance, he would be looking at a Sun Life (SLF-T) or Canadian Banks. Mutual fund companies are having a real tough go and are facing more redemptions, and will probably continue to do so.

It is one of the better gold stocks in terms of valuation and they are not over levered.  It has a 1.4 times book and they have historically cash flowed.  They even pay a low yield.  The whole sector he is quite concerned about.  Gold is not a sector you want to be in.

This has been a very, very strong stock for the past couple of months. Their last quarter, which is typically their weakest quarter, had absolute stunning blow away numbers. Raised their dividend by about 5%, and the payout ratio went down dramatically in the quarter. Their divisions are firing on all cylinders. Very heavily tied to aviation and aeronautics, and he would like to see them do another deal to dilute that exposure a bit. A very cheap stock with a very nice dividend yield of 5.6%.

Probably a little too early to get excited about the drilling services sector. You need to see better sustained oil prices before a company starts spending more money. This company kept its balance sheet clean right through the cycle. They pay a nice dividend. They are survivors, and are using their strong balance sheet to pick away at acquisitions. They are getting iron at very, very discounted prices. Adding rigs very, very cheaply.

Primarily electronic distribution. This was growing very, very rapidly, and the stock was doing very well. People were extrapolating their quarterly growth going forward. Nothing really bad happened with this company, it’s just that they stopped growing at the same rate. A nice, little, solid growth company with a low valuation and good management. Starting to look a little bit better these days.

Recently added this to his portfolio. Similar to Emera (EMA-T) or Fortis (FTS-T), it is in the power/utility space. Pays a yield of about 4.7%. They bought some assets in the US, so are diversifying their asset base a little. One thing with these defensive plays that are more yield oriented, the fear of interest rates has kind of gone up in the US, and stocks have come down a little. He can see 20% upside growth in this name.

Basically a baby New Flyer. They make a smaller version of the transit bus, with 3 models, a 27.5, a 30, and a 35-foot bus. For routes that don’t have the same amount of traffic, this company is able to build a bus that is more efficient, cheaper and more durable than the alternatives. They’ve been in business for about 4 years and trying to build everything up, and are now getting at the point where they are actually going to be cash flow earnings positive.

The company is not going to be out raising money, but are going to be doing smaller tuck in acquisitions. They are in the acquisition business. If they have the cash flow to fund an acquisition, they will be fine, but if not and it is something bigger, they’ll probably have to go to the market.
