Canadian Banks. These have been good long term stocks to own, but in general, US banks are more attractive. They’ve been depressed and valuation multiples have been about the same as Canadian banks. However, the environment is going to be better as far as rising rates for better net interest margins. The US housing market has recovered, but still has room to grow, whereas the Canadian housing market has concern that it is at a peak and is leveling off.

Reporting in a short while, and is not seen anything to get too excited about, or what the catalyst is besides higher rates. Not his favourite space. This has been a very, very strong stock for the past couple of months. Their last quarter, which is typically their weakest quarter, had absolute stunning blow away numbers. Raised their dividend by about 5%, and the payout ratio went down dramatically in the quarter. Their divisions are firing on all cylinders. Very heavily tied to aviation and aeronautics, and he would like to see them do another deal to dilute that exposure a bit. A very cheap stock with a very nice dividend yield of 5.6%.

Probably a little too early to get excited about the drilling services sector. You need to see better sustained oil prices before a company starts spending more money. This company kept its balance sheet clean right through the cycle. They pay a nice dividend. They are survivors, and are using their strong balance sheet to pick away at acquisitions. They are getting iron at very, very discounted prices. Adding rigs very, very cheaply.

Recently added this to his portfolio. Similar to Emera (EMA-T) or Fortis (FTS-T), it is in the power/utility space. Pays a yield of about 4.7%. They bought some assets in the US, so are diversifying their asset base a little. One thing with these defensive plays that are more yield oriented, the fear of interest rates has kind of gone up in the US, and stocks have come down a little. Mortgage insurer. This has traded at a low valuation multiple, and there have been concerns around the business for the last number of years, as people are worried about the Canadian housing market getting overheated and a possible correction. New mortgage regulations will curb business to some degree, and lead to a situation where maybe the quality of their customers are going to be higher, but with less people qualifying, giving potentially lower earnings. He would not be a buyer at this time as there are too many uncertainties as to how the new regulations are going to impact the mortgage insurance market, and more broadly what is going to happen to the Canadian housing market. There is nothing special about this bank. It’s the biggest in Canada, but if you look at Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS-T) you can point to international exposure. Why are pipelines, utilities and telcos affected by interest rates? The reason is, they have very little growth and tend to pay out earnings in the form of dividends. As a result, because rates are so low, those companies, cash flows and dividends have become so prized right now that investors are trading at a premium to the market. In Canada, a 1% move typically corresponds to a 10% reduction in price on pipelines and utilities. However, that doesn’t really impact companies until you get to a certain threshold level of around 3.5% of a bank of Canada rate 10-year.

Markets. Most participants are quite nervous about what is going on. However, Bull markets climb walls of worry, so the fact that there is worry out there is good. It means people are taking a rational look at stocks and markets, and addressing the “concerns” versus the “opportunities”. A lot of people like to look at valuations, and markets are expensive. We are towards the high end of the range, but we can remain in this high end for quite some time. The first leg we have seen has been a multiple expansion, up to 18 or 19 times on the US market. What we need now is for earnings to fill in and reduce that multiple. Expects we are going to see that towards the end of this year and into 2017 with recovering energy prices, which will fuel earnings both in the US and Canada. In addition, we have a US economy that is growing, at an anaemic pace, but still growing. Expects we will see an input from global capital markets and global economies, which will push that even higher. On the US front, we are starting to see a stronger recovery. Friday’s jobs numbers definitely help the economic picture. We are also seeing a recovery in housing starts. Not only are there more people are looking for work, but for better jobs as well. He does have some concern with BREXIT and what that is going to mean for Europe. Seeing some signs of strength in Asia, particularly in China. There is definitely a bottoming, and the next step would be growth.

Auto parts suppliers are very cyclical industries. We have seen a tremendous return to growth in auto demand in the US, and there is a real fear now that we have hit a peak. The latest number he has seen was 18 million cars in the NA that are going to be sold. People have to keep in mind that we went through several years, post the financial crisis, of selling 11 million or less cars, so there is this pent-up demand that we are chewing through. This, and Magna (MG-T) are leaders in their field and both do a great job. Both are considered cheap right now. When auto sales turn over, there will be a contraction in earnings, but OEMs will feel it much more so. This company will be reporting shortly, and he expects good numbers.

John Kim

One of the largest merchant acquirers and payment processors in the US. About 80%+ of their business is in the US. Valuation is really cheap. They should throw off around $3 billion in free cash flow over the next 3 years, about 30% of their market cap. Even if they flat lined, with the amount of cash they throw off you should be able to accrete over 30% in the next 3 years.
