Markets. He is pretty sure the Fed is going to raise rates at some point, arguably September/December, whatever. The outlook for bonds is not great. The market is not cheap, but it has also given low rates that remain low for a long time, still reasonably valued. He can’t make a Bull case for 15%-20%, but can make a case for some stocks here and there of 5%-7%. Those plus dividends and good pickings, you can get a decent return. Thinks healthcare, technology will still work for a while. In Canada banks actually had a good quarter and you could do some switching among the banks, but the US banks look good. A 5%-7% correction in the middle of all this wouldn’t distress him and would probably be nice and healthy. He can see the Canadian market from here mildly outperforming the US, but only because of the energy side.

(A Top Pick June 11/14. Up 35.06%.) Nitrogen prices are moving and it looks like the retail side is going to have a good summer season for them. Thinks it will push through to new highs a year from now of about $145.

Its gold mines are all in Mexico. Had a rainy season last fall and missed a quarter, the stock got hit and never really recovered. Hasn’t added to his holdings, but given the small amount of holding and the price that it is at, he has left it. If his outlook for gold got better, he would probably add to it. This has everything you would look for in a gold mine with $700 costs, growing production, cash flow and a good balance sheet.

He owns their convertible debt. Prefers SNC Lavalin (SNC-T). This is energy exposed and lumpier than SNC Lavalin (SNC-T) or WSP Global (WSP-T) because it is smaller. Averaging down on this at around this price would be fine. He can see it at $16-$17 a year from now.

Compared to Bell Canada (BCE-T)? When interest rates rise, this will be as affected as Bell. Telecom stocks are low growth, mostly for the dividend. BCE has done a really good job the last few years. However,  this company is very much more diversified. Has pulled back recently and is as attractive as it has looked for quite a while. The combination is little growthier and a little less interest rate related.

If you were going to buy a bank for a 10 year hold, he would probably pick this one. Including dividend and growth in dividend, it will probably double over that time frame.

(A Top Pick June 11/14. Down 61.27%.) Sold this when he trimmed his energy holdings last fall. This will take a while and won’t be the first one to move back up. Would prefer others at this point.

Sold his holdings in the fall. Great company. A mixture of oil and gas, some Gulf of Mexico, a little bit of Africa, some Middle East, US and Canada. His problem right now is the stock price. It is barely down from where he sold his holdings, and at that time oil was $80-$85 on its way down. Oil is currently at $59 and the stock has held up quite well. If it went down $2-$3, he would probably buy it back.

Acquired Legacy (LEG-T) and had to assume some debt to do some equity. In a sense that is the kiss of death for some people, but this is an accretive acquisition and you didn’t want them to do it for all debt. The equity issue is at $28.50 and the stock is still $.50 underwater. Thinks that at around $28 with a 2.76% dividend, it gives you almost a 10% yield. If it goes back to where it was 2 days before the acquisition, the stock will be up 10 from here and with a 10% dividend, $31 a year from now gives you a 20% return. Yield of 9.85%.

A high dividend REIT with some growth, but he would put this in the Hold category.

2015-06-01 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CWB-T Canadian Western Bank

Probably got hit a little bit more than it should have, given their long-term track record of being pretty good about managing through energy downturns. They tend not to be overly exposed to retail. Loan losses have ticked up, but not incredibly. A one-year target would be $30-$32.

Sometimes the yield is high and is a red flag because they’re expected to cut, but he doesn’t think that is the case here. Has a little problem with this over a long period of time. Possibly ATMs are going to be a declining business. We are getting more and more of a cashless society, which to him would mean the usage of the ATMs drops. Yield of around 9%.

2015-06-01 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ED.UN-X Edgefront REIT

Sometimes a yield is high and is a red flag because the market expects it to be cut. Doesn’t think that is the case here. It is the lack of liquidity. A small market cap and an unknown. Expects they are going to make an accretive acquisition and the stock is going to go up, which will make the yield go down. Yield of around 9%.

2015-06-01 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart EFN-T Element Financial

(A Top Pick June 11/14. Up 48.48%.) Thinks this is going to do again what the market is assuming they are about to do, which is to grow by accretive acquisition. It is the most obvious buyer for the General Electric (GE-N) fleet and probably one of the big contenders for the GE rail. If they were to do both of them, at expected multiples, you would get an accretion of roughly 25%. If the stock just keeps the multiple that it has had before the announcement of the issue, you would get $22.50-$23 a year from now. His one-year target is going to be $23. Thinks they will start a dividend a year or 2 out.

2015-06-01 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart FCU-T Fission Uranium Corp.

Drilled up a fairly large uranium deposit in Saskatchewan that is adjacent to the bigger guys, so would be an obvious takeover target. Seasonally it has just now come to the end of the drilling program, and now gets quiet until the fall. You have to look for higher prices, but it takes a while. This is worth twice what it is trading at, but you need some kind of catalyst to make it go there. Probably dead money until Labour Day.
