Markets. Beyond the energy, everybody is looking for things that may benefit from lower oil prices. We are in an area where consumer discretionary stocks are doing well. Banks are just reporting and are in the OK category, maybe +$5 and dividend for a year. It is a little difficult to find something that is not already expensive and already baked in. You have to search long and hard. There are also some names in the US where you can find some value. In total, the market is not hugely over expensive. In fact, given your choices, the North American markets, by default, are still probably the best place to be. He is looking for companies that have a good balance sheet, pay a dividend and generates free cash flow, after CapX, so that the free cash flow can grow the business, pay dividends, make acquisitions; all the things you would like to see growing companies do.

They did a financing, including a convertible debenture which he purchased. The stock popped, but the convertible debenture went from $100 to $104.25, indicating that the market really likes the prospects here. He doesn’t own the stock. Thinks the stock will do well over time.

Has been in an asset decline for a few years now and losing some business on the institutional side. Retail side is not growing either. Highly Canadian equity, which has hurt them in a relative sense in the last couple of years. Dividend has been double-digit for a couple of years and he thought they would have cut by now. The thing to watch is “assets under management”. If it continues to fall, they are going to have to cut.

He would have thought this would have held up better, because it got the payment from the Chinese and so it has about $2 as share in cash, which is the opposite of some of the others. Doesn’t pay a dividend, has a lot of cash and has a good balance sheet. But it is also kind of a prospective company that needs to spend some money to bring production on stream. This will not be the 1st stock to move, by far. Wait for oil prices to come up and other seniors to move first.

Got hit quite a bit. It has a $50 million tax thing with the CRA, but that is not a big deal. Have a leveraged balance sheet. It is about 3X debt to cash flow. He compared its cash flow of 130% to Crescent Point’s (CPG-T) at under 100%, and avoided it because of the difference. Lower oil prices would make that even worse. If oil stays low for quite a while, this company at some point would probably have to cut their dividend.

Had facility problems. Made an acquisition on Monday and then made an announcement where they sold part of the facilities in exchange for getting room on one of the plants with Keyera (KEY-T). That is why the stock was weak, so now nobody cares and there is going to be tax loss selling on it in the next couple of weeks. If you get through this and go to the other side, they are good finders, numbers are going to look good, it’ll take a couple of quarters for the market to care. He would think that 6-8 months from now, the stock should be a fair bit higher than it is now.

Rails have taken a bit of a hit lately. Crude by rail would have impacted the stock. The Canadian rails were getting awfully, awfully expensive. Have recovered somewhat in the last couple of days. He prefers CSX (CSX-N), which is cheaper by a fair bit and has a different exposure with quite a bit less oil. If you think oil stays down, it would probably be the best. However, if you think energy is going to recover, he would probably buy this one.

A lot of people and the market are forgetting that this company have really good hedges on. 33% is hedged at $93 for next year, about 25% hedged in the $90’s for 2016 and 15% hedged in the $90’s in 2017. Has almost a 10% yield now. His numbers show that oil would have to stay in the low $50’s before the dividend is in jeopardy. 9.5% dividend yield, which he thinks is safe.

Sold his holdings in September. This is highly dependent on the oil prices in the very short term. A little bit on the quasi-integrated with some heavy oil. If oil were to go down to $60, this will probably go down less, but also has less upside. You can Hold if you own it, but it depends on your outlook for the price of oil. Thinks it will lag some of the others for upside when oil does recover.

Just acquired Nerd Corps out of Vancouver for $57 million, which gives them many more hours of animated programming. This will be about 5% accretive to earnings. He bought the bond that helped fund the deal. Stock was up $0.54, which was just about exactly what the extra value of the acquisition is. Not a cheap stock, but there aren’t too many choices. A lot of the good news is already priced in. (See Top Picks.)

They have the TV side (ESPN and ABC), the theme parks with China opening, along with the movie side having a great line up of blockbusters. It is up, pushing 20X now, but in the US environment that is not expensive. 1-year target of about $105. Yield of 0.92%.

(A Top Pick Dec 16/13. Down 0.64%.) Have actually done just about everything they said and made acquisitions of US railcar and helicopter leasing companies. The earnings have grown and it looks like they are going to grow again next year. Stock has been choppy. Quarters have been okay, but not good, and then it gets soft again. He thinks it will reach his $17-$18 target. (Had almost picked this again.)

If you take the money that you don’t spend on gas, you go right to a grocery store. This also has a lot of real estate underneath it, including Crombie (CRR.UN-T) and a bunch of direct real estate. If you take out the real estate, you get only 5.5X price to EBITDA. He bought it at just under $78 and it has moved nicely so far. He thinks it can move again and come to the high $80’s to $90’s. Try to get it on a $2 dip. Nice and safe. Extra growth comes from the Canada Safeway, which they acquired. A lot of the stores need fixing up, and the ones they have started on are seeing really nice bumps. Dividend yield of 1.28%.

2014-12-02 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart LIF-T Labrador Iron Ore Royalty

Iron ore prices have been at 5-year lows lately. They have been getting hit. Very much tied to Chinese GDP outlook, more than a lot of things. Chinese are trying to stimulate, which shows you how soft things really are. If this stays here for any length of time, they’ll probably have to cut the dividend. Yield of 6%.

Thinks there are a couple of more years in this auto cycle. Although the numbers are pretty good, he looks at the average age of the cars on the road. It is coming down, but only marginally. It still is about 11 years. Feels the stock still has some growth to it, but don’t stay too long. 2 years would be about right.
