Markets. The Fed and short-term interest rates are his main focus right now. He doesn’t think the market has finished going up as you would need an impending recession and some kind of bubble out there. Certain areas of stocks have run, particularly in February, to the point where you need to focus more stock by stock, not just across the whole market. A rate increase of 0.25% is not a big deal, but it is the symbolism of it. Most of the previous times when rates started to go up, the market in the next 6 months was actually double digit higher. If the economy takes it okay, you could see 3 years of it increasing. He is inclined to think that after they raise it the 1st time, they might not do it on a regular basis. In Canada, energy and materials lag. If you actually look at consumer discretionary and staples in Canada, they are doing well in the US, but also doing very well in Canada.

Midsized pipelines? As a place to go and hide before the energy drop, they were really quite expensive. Now there has been a pullback. If you have a 10 year time horizon, you could probably buy these and put them away in the next few months. He is looking for a little bit of growth as well. His favourite is Enbridge (ENB-T).

Had been trading at a very, very rich multiple. It was kind of an “excuse to go down waiting to happen” and the excuse was Alberta and energy exposure. Margins in car dealerships are not very much on the sale of cars, it’s all on the repair side. This is not one for him. It needs to be mid-$30 before he would take a look at it.

Just made a small US acquisition. Had pulled back into the $46 area which is where he bought. For the 1st time, with a bit more earnings estimates increases, you have a multiple under 20 times. This gives you a growth stock of US consumer and European. There are lots of things more that they can do. Yield of 0.37%.

2015-03-16 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart AVO-T Avigilon Corp

Sold his holdings this past quarter at $24.50. Margins are getting squeezed so they have to pay more for their growth. Revenue and earnings are fine it’s just that SG&A (Selling, General and Administrative Expenses) are creeping up. Bought a video analytics company so that they would have a video system. Another thing that disturbed him is that they bought the Vancouver building for $42 million, and he questions if there wasn’t a better use of money than that. However, at under $20 continue to hold, because given their pattern, it’ll show a really good quarter and the stock might rebound. It would have to be $17-$18 before he went back into this.

He thinks uranium is 2 or 3 years away and doesn’t see any catalysts in the short term.

2015-03-16 BUY on WEAKNESS Must be logged in to use chart CNQ-T Canadian Natural Rsrcs

Sold his holdings last fall. He doesn’t think this is a buy until it is $33. Feels that all the Canadian, senior oily companies are overly expensive at the present time, and need to pull back a good 10% before they are in Buy territory.

2015-03-16 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CPG-T Crescent Point Energy Corp

Has a really high hedge at $89 for this year with about 33%-40% hedged for 2016 at $84. Good balance sheet and growth in production. They can pay the dividend out of cash flow. If oil is $43 a year from now, this would probably be rethought. You would have to have quite a draconian forecast for oil for them to have to cut.

Recently made a huge acquisition which would grow their business by 50%. They are going to have to do an issue to pay for part of it. It has done what it is going to do in the very short term. He would do it on the issue if it was going to be $78-$80, which would be a better entry point.

This is down like the group. Not a pure gas anymore, but feels they are susceptible to lower prices because they have an oily side. He would much prefer Tourmaline (TOU-T) and Paramount Resources (POU-T).

Gold is having a difficult time because of the strength of the US$. This one is a nice speculative trade possibly; depending on what you think happens in Greece. Gold looks like it is going to be tough for a few more months before there is a rally.

2015-03-16 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart MFC-T Manulife Financial

(A Top Pick March 12/14. Up 4.58%.) He would have thought it would have been 10%. This is a beneficiary of higher rates, and this is why it is kind of flattish. Now that it looks like we are finally going to get higher rates, he expects the stock will end up at $24-$25 a year from now.

In lifecos, this would be his favourite. It has the best growth including Asian growth. The catalyst will be that their spreads will widen as rates go up. They are not as sensitive to others as they hedged out in 2008-2009 when rates hit. Starting to give dividend increases which will become more regular. This will give you 8%-10% returns instead of the 5% that we have had.

If you think Europe is just starting QE and we are just finishing, that is going to help the stock extend the car cycle. He owns Martinrea (MRE-T) instead, which is quite a bit less expensive. This group is still fine for another couple of years.
