Markets.  There are BMO executive changes taking place.  Bill Downes is 74 and approaching retirement.  The most likely replacement is rather young and so if it is next year, then 46 would be the age of one of the younger Canadian CEOs of Canadian banks ever.  He likes banks and owns them with favourites being TD-T and BNS-T but he also likes US banks and almost had one as a Top Pick.  There are bigger beneficiaries in the Canadian banks.  Stock valuations are not that demanding and they are nice holds.  Industrials and consumer discretionaries have signs of a rotation so that the market itself might be sideways.  If we get more GDP numbers then the economically sensitive sectors could benefit.

He sold it 15 months ago as the valuation got nice and the outlook was going to be tough for a couple of years.  There is skepticism about the merger having the synergies they are claiming.  He will stay out of it until he sees how the merger is going and would perhaps buy on a dip then.

The dividend is safe.  It is a bit of a highbred because it has the utility side it.  This is not a bad entry point, but he prefers ENB-T.  Prefers ENB-T

Utility and Growth.  Their acquisition looks pretty good.  You can see a couple of dollars up and a 5‘ish yield.  You should beat the market and the group.

Lumpy earnings.  He stays away from it because it is unpredictable.

He thinks it could pull back to the Mid-$50s.  You would have a flat return for a year and that is as much as it pulls back for this year.  There is only 1 or 2% growth.

Radio, like newspapers are a media in decline.  Radio is a -5 compound for them.  They are okay for now but the market is telling you something when you have a 10% yield.  He would stay away.

It is a good.   More US than Canada for economic exposure that pulled back about $4 this week.  It neat the estimates on the street.  Expect a 10% appreciation making it a double digit return.

They normally issue for acquisitions that are accretive.  But you always get all this stock coming at you.  They got the message in the spring.  And then in the last little while they issued stock again.  They did it only for the balance sheet but he thinks they shot themselves in the foot.  We need a couple of quarters of decent earnings and cash flow growth.

It is uninvestable.  It would be a speculative buy.  They are generating cash now but there is so much debt and they don’t have a CEO.  A year from now it will either very low or very high.  The leverage works both ways.  He recommends trading it.

2016-10-28 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart EFN-T Element Fleet Management

(Top Pick Nov 23/15, Down 5.24%)  It includes the value of ECN.  ECN is at $3.05 and that is why you get a marginal decline.  He would probably sell and keep the Element Fleet.

Valuations are stretched.  This is one of the better ones.  FTS-T would be a favourite.  These have pulled back over the summer and will probably flatten out.  They are still relatively expensive.

It is his favourite pipeline.  They are going to grow both earnings and dividend by about 10% through 2022.  You have to look for one of these that has growth and earnings.  As rates start to go up you want one with growth and this is the growthiest one.

He does not specifically follow this one but the first one he would look at would be SLW-T.  He thinks of silver with the trend being dominated by gold and it would be a bit better in a good economic period.  In the short term we are not looking good for a rate increase and it will look better in the wedding demand period in the spring.

MRU-T vs. L-T.  Neither one are favourite because of the competition.  COST-Q is opening more stores.  Wal-Mart is here with food as well.  You are starting to get some food inflation which they are having trouble passing on to consumers.  L-T has Shoppers and so he prefers it.  He is not particularly thrilled with it either one, however.  You would have to wait for Empire’s acquisition of Safeway to be fixed to consider it.
