Markets. Had thought there would be some kind of time correction as opposed to an actual 5%-10% correction, because there was too much money on the sideline. Because of this, he basically stayed fully invested, which was the right thing to do. Sold a position recently, so now has some cash. Markets are choppy. It’s September and October, so his current short-term thinking is that the market is really worried about the language from the Fed next week, and that maybe they raise rates sooner than they said. He doesn’t necessarily buy that, but it is getting priced in with a strong US$ and a weak Cdn$, weak bonds and weak pure yield stocks. On the other side, banks still do well. Lifecos are also beneficiaries of higher rates, so all those stocks are doing well. If the Fed says rates will stay low for a considerable time, he thinks there will be a bond market rally and you’ll see a Cdn$ rally back to $0.91 plus. Thinks the stock market is more nervous within sectors and he doesn’t think the market moves up a lot or down a lot. From here, we are really driven by earnings growth and/or the lack thereof, stock by stock and group by group. Canada has done very well, better than most G 20 countries. You now have to look at group and stock by stock.

Lumber stocks? Lumber prices have done well generally and the stocks have lagged a little bit. There is a soft 3rd quarter coming, but he expects US housing to pick up slowly and the 4th and 1st quarters to be better. (See Top Picks)

2014-09-12 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart AAPL-Q Apple

At this price, you are paying only about 15X earnings. If you think they have growth above average, seasonally this is one you want to own as they are going to sell a lot of new phones, etc. and you will have a good quarter. He is seeing Wall Street targets in the $110 range, which is 10%, making it still worth holding. If you are back at $90, you would feel a lot more excited.

2014-09-12 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart AR-T Argonaut Gold

With gold prices weak, it is hard for the stocks to do very well. Has been picking away at this one recently when it gets around $4. Production costs are under $700. They have a couple of good quarters coming. The short-term strength in the US$ and the lack of inflation, just doesn’t bode well for a 4-6 week outlook on gold. If you are either a gold bug or have patience, this would be a Buy.

2014-09-12 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ATH-T Athabaska Oil Sands Corp

Has a $10-$11 NAV. Had a Put with China that came to fruition recently, which guarantees financing. There is a rumour that Encana (ECA-T) would come in and be their joint venture partner in the Duvernay. There is lots of value here, but it needs one more catalyst. He has a small amount in a resource fund that he manages.

2014-09-12 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BCE-T BCE Inc.

Thinks buying Bell Alliant (BA-T) shows a somewhat desperate reach for growth because there is not a lot of ongoing growth in the business now. This acquisition will add a couple of percents. Buy it for the yield, but don’t buy it for anything else. Thinks it is fully valued and wouldn’t surprise him if it is flat for the year. Doesn’t like the outlook for this business in Canada.

Had a dip to about $22-$23 about 1-2 years ago, and that was a bit of a buying opportunity. He finds it fairly fully valued now. Yield is not comparable to some high yields. If you own, you could Hold, but wouldn’t buy it at this price.

2014-09-12 BUY Must be logged in to use chart BXE-T Bellatrix Exploration Ltd.

There was some bad news yesterday, which pulled the stock down. Their problem has been execution. It is really, really undervalued. He likes it down at these prices. Under $8 is a good price. Its gas flows through third-party stations and they got notified that there will be a 1 week outage next week for 30,000 BOE’s a day, which works out to about 1,000 barrels a day on a 40,000 base. This is not big, but it happened this spring and now has happened again. They are fixing it by building their own which comes on stream in the spring. This stock trades at debt adjusted to cash flow about 3.7 and the group trades at 6. There is actually value of $12-$13 here. (See Top Picks)

2014-09-12 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CNR-T Canadian National R.R.

Valuations are historically high. There is decent earnings growth as long as the economy keeps going. There is not enough earnings growth to blow you away or be higher if you look at a PEG ratio. Because of this, he owns CXS (CSX-N) in the US, which is trading at about 2/3 only of the valuation of CNR and Canadian Pacific (CP-T).

Just acquired Lightstream Resources and issued shares for $750 million. This will be about 3% accretive to cash flow per share. This is contiguous land and makes a lot of sense. He bought more shares when it pulled back from $42. 7% yield. Cheap valuation. Thinks this will be fine going forward.

Coal oriented, so earnings have lagged, but only back a year. It is starting to come out of that and it looks like they are going to show better earnings growth at a much cheaper valuation than Canadian National (CNR-T) or Canadian Pacific (CP-T).

(Market Call Minute.) Uranium, but not a producer. An explorer and you have to have a long-term view, because it is probably another 2-3 years for uranium really get going. For certain type of investor, this would be a Hold.

They have a big deal to buy an Arizona public utility. This is a good deal and provides a little bit of growth. He would actually prefer Bell Canada (BCE-T) over this. This is in the low growth area and will definitely be affected by higher interest rates. He would prefer a pipeline to either of these.
