Markets. This has been a well anticipated correction, and not any more serious than umpteen others that we have had in the past. His focus is on the fundamentals and the fundamentals, particularly south of the border, are quite good. In fact Canada is doing better than he had anticipated. It seems to be handling low oil prices with a minimum damage so far. Our trade numbers and employment numbers are better than everybody anticipated. This is actually a time that people should be picking away at stocks they like. He focuses a lot on dividend paying stocks and the telcos have just walked through this period as have the utilities. Markets are more volatile, but the markets are different now than what they were a few years ago. There are a lot of big players in the market and a lot of them depend on volatility to make money. If there is no volatility, they will create it if they possibly can. His view is that you get good positions, hold them and add to them when you can.

China. He considers certain concerns to being over the horizon, in other words it is something that might happen. Doesn’t see the Chinese economy collapsing. It is a managed economy. They can push a few buttons and a couple of million people will be out working somewhere. They have huge foreign exchange reserves and still have lots of capacity. It is going to grow at a slower pace simply because it is changing gears, but it is not going to go into any kind of a negative. 10 years ago it was growing at 7%, and now it is only growing at 6%.

2015-09-04 DON'T BUY Must be logged in to use chart ACQ-T AutoCanada Inc.

This was a very hot stock. They buy up auto dealerships. Unfortunately they have ended up with probably too many dealerships in Alberta. Thinks the jury is still out on just how deep the slowdown is going to be in Alberta. It is a high risk stock, and he would be inclined to sit on the sidelines until oil gets to $65 or higher and it looks like Alberta starts to perk along better.

This company is holding its own. Have cut back significantly on costs and have just made an interesting acquisition. A very high risk situation, and can be very volatile at times. John Cheng is a very methodical type of manager and he is fixing things as he goes along.

2015-09-04 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart BNS-T Bank of Nova Scotia

(A Top Pick Oct 10/14. Down 11.25%.) We are in a somewhat artificial situation with the US guys Shorting our banks. They have done this before, and they were wrong. Recent numbers were okay. Dividend is good and the PE multiple is low. A relatively conservative company.

2015-09-04 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CPG-T Crescent Point Energy Corp

This is one of the oils he decided to retain, mainly because it is so diversified. It is not in Alberta, but is in Saskatchewan. One of the best managements going. The bounce lately is at the bottom. He is quite sure this is a company that will survive this whole low oil price period. Not a bad buy if you want some income as well.

2015-09-04 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart DOL-T Dollarama Inc.

This is a stock that will do just fine, even in a slower Canadian economy. Management has shown itself to be very sure footed. They have niche that they haven’t filled completely. His main concern was that a US company would come marching in and knock them out. The environment is quite positive for this type of company.

2015-09-04 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart EMA-T Emera Inc

Emera (EMA-T) or Fortis (FTS-T)? He owns both. This one seems to be showing a little more get up and go. They just made another acquisition and the stock performed exceedingly well. Both of them are good stocks to own.

2015-09-04 BUY Must be logged in to use chart ENF-T Enbridge Income Fund Holdings

For an RESP for the next 15-20 years? That is perfectly appropriate. This is a fund that was created by the pipeline, and it is rolling assets down into this portfolio. Recently it got down to a price where it was a 5% yield. There are further assets to be rolled down and the dividend should continue to increase. A good, long term investment.

He is completely out of gold and has been for some time. There is a place for gold in the marketplace, but this isn’t the time. It hasn’t tested for low. We have come close to breaking down in the last little while. If it breaks down through $1000, it could continue. The times when gold has really flourished is when there is relatively high inflation. This is probably the best of the bunch.

2015-09-04 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart HOT.UN-T American Hotel Income Properties

Normally he is somewhat negative on hotels and that sector, but this is a good time for the hotel industry, particularly in the US. The numbers showing travelling has gone up significantly. He could see 2-3 years of reasonable growth in the US, and the hotels should do just fine.

2015-09-04 PARTIAL BUY Must be logged in to use chart HSE-T Husky Energy

Generally negative on oils, even the integrateds like this one. It has downstream assets in its refineries and gas stations. Certainly a lot safer than a pure exploration or pure producer in that area. Taking a little nibble on this one is okay, as it is not going to disappear. The dividend is pretty secure.

2015-09-04 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart IBB-Q iShares Nasdaq BioTech ETF

This has a huge portfolio of lesser-known biotech and pharmaceutical stocks. A little more volatile. Thinks the sector is going to grow quite well. Has been expensive at times, but has sold off recently. A good area if you want to get into the biotechs. With aging population and more money into the healthcare, these guys are going to do very well.
