Markets. US stocks are very near a record, back to 18,000. This is a funny market, because Value guys can say there is not that much value, but there are also trillions of dollars sitting on the sidelines. The bond market looks like a trap, and he thinks quite a few people are going to lose money in bonds. Where do you go? Do you sit in zero? Do you go to gold? If you can, pick a good dividend paying stock and just take your chances. Wishes the Fed would increase rates 25 basis points. Doesn’t feel BREXIT is a big enough hurdle that they should hold back. Wage inflation is between 3.5% and 3.8%, which is high these days. Looking at the last employment number, it doesn’t look like it is going to stop. Also, some of the benefits of low energy costs are going away and thinks $50+ oil is a reasonable level. That is when the DUCs, real but uncompleted wells in Texas, come in. The benefits of the drop in energy is behind us, and now we are going to see that come back and bite a little bit on the inflation side.

Gold stock or ETF? GLD-N would be more of a way to go. He hasn’t jumped into the gold market. The really big positive for gold is if we see inflation coming back. He would wait a little longer to see how it is going to work.

One of the better gold companies. He is still going to sit on the fence until he gets a better feel for gold, and it could be coming fairly soon.

If you like the development area and you want to be in the Canadian side with a government that is much more interested in fiscal stimulation, subways to be built, etc. this is not a bad time. Thinks they are going to do extremely well.

Watching this closely. This is a stock that you buy on speculation. If you want to put 5% of your portfolio in this, it has lots of upside potential. In the C series, they have got their money from Québec. The risk has declined significantly over the last 6 months.

Excellent dividend of 4.46%. They’ve raised the dividend recently, but he expects they will again. Still in the process of absorbing Manitoba Tel (MBT-T), and that will be accretive. If you want a stock that you can put in your portfolio and sleep quietly at night, this is the kind that you need.

2016-07-08 BUY Must be logged in to use chart BTE-T Baytex Energy Corp

Had recommended this the last time he was on, and it is now up about 10%. Still sees upside. The Canadian energy sector has its problems, but he sees the problems more in the conventional oil wells and oil sands. This company has a high viscosity, but pumpable heavy oil where there is quite good market. They got themselves into a bit of a debt squeeze by buying into the Texas shales. They have a good position there, so if anybody comes back on stream in the next little while, that is where it will be. Anything over $45-$50 and they can make money. This has some real potential, and he believes the price of oil is going to drift up into the $50 range.

Closed the Checkpoint acquisition and recently acquired a German company. They have done exceedingly well internationally. It is in an area where you can’t see anything but long-term growth. However, the multiple has gotten a little high. Has had quite a run, so thinks the stock will take a bit of a rest and go sideways for a while.

2016-07-08 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CPG-T Crescent Point Energy Corp

Sold most of his holdings, and recently bought back in. It ran up to $22, and has backed off about 10%. It is still one of the best oil company management teams in Canada. They are not in the oil sands, they are in the Bakken’s. With any kind of upward movement in earnings he sees they will be quick to pay it out in the form of dividends. Dividend yield of 1.8%.

2016-07-08 DON'T BUY Must be logged in to use chart EMP.A-T Empire Company (A)

CEO just left. A very tough industry to be in. Margins are paper thin and there are always things happening. There is more concern about contamination, biochemicals getting into the foods, etc. The takeover looked good on the surface, but this company’s emphasis was in the Maritimes and Québec. They might as well go to a different country, based on the psychology and culture, as to going out West.

(A Top Pick June 26/15. Down 2.09%.) Had really bought this for income. It is a vehicle that Enbridge (ENB-T) rolls assets down into. Pays a very nice dividend. The quality on this is great.

Silver has been outperforming gold to a degree. Also, silver is a commercial product as well as a precious metal. If you want to be a little risky and take a shot, it is worth a try.

A premier company, but hasn’t done much over the last year. Has built a good base and he can see it going up from here. They are extremely successful at what they do. Good management. Dividend is not that exciting.

2016-07-08 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart IPL-T Inter Pipeline

A provincial pipeline in terms of servicing mainly Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan, and not into the big political problems. Pays a pretty reasonable dividend. They service not only the regular industry, but the oil sands industry, which is part of the problem that he sees developing. With oil prices back into the $60 range, he doesn’t really see the long-term growth developing in the oil sands until prices get higher. Not a bad investment in your portfolio, simply because they produce a good cash flow.
