Market. The market has been a bit of a disappointment this year. When both financials and energy are a little weak in the knees, the market doesn’t do much. We have probably seen a bottom in the banks at this point. There is a misunderstanding or lack of knowledge in the US of how Canadian banking works. We are in a low interest rate environment for the foreseeable future. Doesn’t see a recession coming again, but we need to see a period of drift down of 5%-10% with some stability coming in.

Indexed based ETF’s or sector-based ETF’s? He buys both. You have to look through the name and what they hold, and decide where you want to focus. If you really feel strongly about a particular sector, that is the one that you go to.

The difference between mutual funds and ETF’s? Mutual funds are fully managed portfolios, and fees are higher because of that. They are selling to a lot of small investors and there is a fair amount of administrative costs. ETF’s are much simpler in that you have just a straight portfolio that is usually focused in a particular area and there is not a lot of investment management going on, and a lot less administrative costs. Fees on ETF’s are significantly less.

A great concept, and initially there were savings in aggregating a bunch of dealerships. Unfortunately, they started in Alberta. Until there is more diversification across Canada, or until we get a big recovery in Western Canada, this is a stock that is not going to do much for you.

The stock got pricey, and he is not keen on Potash (POT-T) which is merging with them. He wished that they had both stayed independent. If it got down under $100, he would have another hard look at this.

Thinks this company is going to do okay. The stock has run into a sort of flat period right now, and he doesn’t see any significant downside. These people are super operators, and seemed to be able to take on good sized acquisitions and make them accretive.

Considers this as somewhat speculative. He has some in portfolios, but usually at the direction of clients. Recently the stock has gone up on the basis of the present management doing a better job. There was a little disappointment in the last quarter. The stock is fine, expectations just got a little ahead of themselves. They have lots of cash. Expects the stock will continue to make progress.

(A Top Pick May 27/16. Down 52%.) He believed that the market was changing and it looked like the price of oil was going to stay in the $50 area.

The pipelines are essentially utilities. He is glad the Northern pipeline is dead and buried as he thinks it would have been a major problem for them. This is in a Buy zone right now and has a good yield. He can see more construction coming on for the pipelines in Canada. Dividend yield of 4.7%.

They’ve been doing much better. His big objection is that they have so much focus in the far East. He would rather have more European/North American focus. Prefers Canada Life. Dividend yield of 3.5%.

Oriented strand board is the equivalent to plywood, when they put the panels together. The softwood lumber dispute could actually be positive for this company. A lot of their plants are in the US. This is a way to get your toe into the housing market. They just tripled the dividend. Dividend yield of 3%. (Analysts’ price target is $46.50.)

2017-06-23 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart POW-T Power Corp

The problem is that the market doesn’t recognize that this has good assets offshore, and they don’t like Power Financial (PWF-T) because of their emphasis on mutual fund sales. It is sort of in limbo. You only buy this on the basis of wanting a stock that has a safe dividend and a reasonable yield. Thinks this is just going to go sideways. You could probably do just as well by going to one of the banks or one of the insurance companies.

A very well-managed company. The market problems lately, particularly on the Canadian side, has held them back. They have a good product. This is a long-term hold. Good product spread. Dividend yield of 3.9%.

(A Top Pick May 27/16. Up 17%.) Banks make a great, solid part of your portfolio. Dividends are okay and they increase on a regular basis. He likes this bank, particularly because of their expansion into the US. A little disappointed that it has not paid off recently, but he understands they are reorganizing in the US.

The stock shot up when demand for met coal was strong, but that has now passed and we are really waiting for base commodities such a zinc, copper, etc. There really hasn’t been a major change in the commodity cycle just yet. It will come, but it may not be for a couple of years.
