Markets. We are at a resistance point, but there is enough good news out there. We need something positive on the energy side and that would probably carry the TSX through that resistance point. He would hope to see 2%-3% in this next quarter, but we are in a slow growth period. You can’t expect equities to take off when we are talking about 1.5%. Expects we are going to be closer to 2% GDP growth this year. Has been disappointed in the banks this year. The big Shorts out of New York haven’t helped. There have been a lot of Canadian managers that have been red hot on US banks, particularly the regional ones, and he thinks they were wrong. The new rules on lending in the US are really hamstringing a lot of the regional banks. They are going to be dead for a while.

Gold? He used to be a gold holder, but doesn’t own any at the moment. He is a traditionalist in that you really get into gold when you see problems with inflation. He could see people getting concerned because of negative interest rates. It has had a nice run, but will probably have to give some of it back.

Doesn’t like dual class shares. Anyone who is in the mutual fund business has a real problem with ETF’s. You can basically duplicate diversification in a portfolio, pick your spots, and decide you will run with that. This wasn’t really available when mutual funds became popular. He would use ETF’s instead.

Has been a fan of this for years, but sold his holdings at $122. He was expecting to buy it back at under $100. The fertilizer market is not in great shape. All fertilizer stocks look fully priced at the present time.

2016-04-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ATH-T Athabaska Oil Sands Corp

To him, this has always been one of those stocks that is an “over the horizon” situation. Although he is moderately optimistic about the oil sector, the oil sands have a new future ahead of them. $50 oil is pretty skinny for the oil sands, and a lot of projects are probably going to go by the boards.

2016-04-14 BUY on WEAKNESS Must be logged in to use chart BAM.A-T Brookfield Asset Management (A)

Took his profits on this, but still owns Brookfield Properties. He likes the Brookfield group in general. They are very smart, heads up investors. Had felt this one had got to a price range where it was going to be stuck for a while. If it sold off significantly, he would probably add it back into his portfolio. (See Top Picks.)

2016-04-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BBD.B-T Bombardier Inc (B)

There was a report that Delta (DAL-N) gave a thumbs up to a big C series buy. Thinks this company is going to survive. The political situation is such that the governments won’t let this company die. They have a good product, but it took them far too long to get it out.

2016-04-14 BUY Must be logged in to use chart BEP.UN-T Brookfield Renewable Energy

This is a product that has some advantage. Has been performing quite well over the last little while. A little bit too thin a trader for his company, but he likes what they are doing. It’s a stock that will continue to attract attention. This is an area that will show opportunities, and it is reasonably conservative. Not a bad investment.

This is properties. They are all over the world. They are big. Billions of dollars. Good diversity. Thinks it is about ready to break out and have another good period of growth. Dividend yield of 5.06%.

2016-04-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CP-T Canadian Pacific Rail

Owns Canadian National (CNR-T) and has been thinking about lightening up a little. Had always thought CP had gotten a little ahead of itself. Also, they keep getting off on these tangents of takeovers. He likes the rails. They are basically economy stocks, and have been showing growth. Feels they are reasonably priced right now.

2016-04-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ENB-T Enbridge

In the energy sector and it has gotten beaten up pretty badly in the initial stages, but this is a utility. It is carrying oil and will continue to operate its pipelines, both in Canada and the US. The Northern Gateway is probably a dead issue. Thinks the dividend is okay and the company is safe.

2016-04-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart HBC-T Hudson Bay Co.

Doesn’t look at retail stocks often. However, in Canada with Target taking a stage left and Sears sort of on the ropes, it is a tough business to be in. However, this is almost a real estate stock, and is trading at a significant discount to NAV. Just added Saks in Toronto and have taken over various stores in Europe and just seem to be able to do the right thing. He is looking at this pretty hard right now. If you believe in the real estate story, this stock is probably good to $30.

2016-04-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart MG-T Magna Int'l. (A)

Has avoided auto stocks because of the volatility they have shown in the past. This is a volatile industry. This has been a well-run company and they have done well in Europe.

2016-04-14 DON'T BUY Must be logged in to use chart NA-T National Bank of Canada

He doesn’t hold this bank because they were pretty aggressive in building its portfolio of loans in Alberta. Concerned that they probably have too much in the way of oil/gas debt. You are probably better to stick with the other banks.

2016-04-14 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart TD-T Toronto Dominion

(A Top Pick April 10/15. Up 4.85%.) He is hoping to see a dividend increase. If you want exposure to the US banking system, this is probably the better way to do it. They have a good foothold. With the US economy growing faster than Canada, this is a good place to be.
