Markets. Thinks it is going to be a bit of a struggle for equities in the next little while. There are too many odds and sods out there, including the Greek situation, the Ukrainian situation, the Iraq situation. Also, expecting some political upheaval in places that are big oil producers. There are a lot of things causing uncertainty in the world, a little more than usual. However, the economic outlook is as good as it has looked for a few years. US is finally really gaining some traction and if it does well, Canada will do okay as well. Our forest product industry, mining industry, lower energy costs, the lower loonie, and Ontario, even though the industry side isn’t as big as it used to be, will all benefit. Banks were the worst performing sector in January, but they are back into a Buy now. He would advise people not to sit on huge cash amounts, but to get invested. The market will make progress, but it will be tough progress. He has been increasing his US exposure, and it is up about 10%-15%.

An aggregator of auto dealerships. They were going great guns until around June-July. The pullback is strictly related to the decline in oil prices. About 50% of their acquisitions have been in Alberta. People in Alberta are not buying houses and are not buying pickups. Market probably overreacted on the 1st downside, but there is still a pretty big open question as to whether these auto dealerships end up operating at a loss. He wants to see how far Alberta compacts before getting interested.

(A Top Pick Feb 21/14. Up 36.13%.) A nicely structured company, but a little pricey at the present time. Did a big acquisition in Australia. Have a good marketing side. The agricultural sector is going to grow.

Sold his holdings way back, way too soon. It always seemed expensive, but then took quite a hit. Have a drilling, tunnelling system that uses high-pressure water, and they can suck up all the bits and pieces. This allows them to go through very complicated areas in urban environments where there are cables and pipes, etc. without destroying everything. The problem is, their technology is not patentable. Anybody can get a big truck with a suction thing and copy what they are doing. Have had a lot of competition. This is a company that does well when municipalities have lots of money. He is watching this. The multiple is 19, about half of what it was. If the US takes off, they have a lot of activity down there.

(A Top Pick Feb 21/14. Up 22.27%.) Was a little surprised the way it ran up the way it did. The current price of around $55 is a good buying range. Likes the business they are in. They are very competitive.

2015-02-18 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart BNS-T Bank of Nova Scotia

Banks have had a real downturn, and from what he can understand it is because of guys in New York that are Shorting Canadian banks. If you are concerned about slow growth in Canada, Mexico is booming, Central and South America are doing okay. This is where he expects the growth to come from. This is a conservative bank. Yield of 3.90%.

2015-02-18 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BTE-T Baytex Energy Corp

Has always liked this because of the dividend. Almost entirely in heavy oil, but pumpable heavy oil in Alberta, in a sector of the province where no matter where you drill, you hit some nice heavy oil. Unfortunately they bought a chunk of field in the Eagleford in Texas, which turned out to be quite a hot prospect and they made lots of money. Big wells and big decline rates. He is concerned that to stay in that play, they may have to cough up more capital than they really want to. He would be cautious right now.

Had been buying more of this at around $25. One of the best oil producers in Canada. They are also in North Dakota. They hedged by selling forward a good part of their 2015 production. It is not without risks. He is concerned and is watching it. If the price of oil continues to hold in the current area, he would become more concerned. If the stock price dipped down a little, he might buy more, but otherwise he would be cautious. If you are going to hold an oil, this is the one to hold. Good dividend.

He eliminated his position in this a couple of months ago. Just did a $1.5 billion issue, and that is going to be used to maintain the dividend. Stock really hasn’t performed that well. The big oil sands companies have some problems ahead of them. If the oil price goes back to $75, these companies are okay, but what if oil only went back to $60? It almost looks like we are in a situation with oil where we were with gas, just in North America. We are in a period where oil is going to be relatively low, particularly in the oil sands. He would stay away from the big guys that have oil sands production, and go with the smaller guys that are maybe more flexible.

Way too early. The rig count is dropping rapidly, and fields around Edmonton are filling up with rigs just sitting there. You really want to stay away from the drilling sector in the oil patch, both in the US and Canada.

Fuel distributor. More recently he thinks they are looking at more price advantages. They lost their big supplier, but managed to step out and do quite well. With the temperatures we are having, he imagines that they must be having a heck of a quarter. Dividend has been quite good.

Got out of this some time ago. Feels it has some detrimental aspects that you have to recognize. Some of their major fields will revert back to the Colombian government in a relatively short time. Haven’t been that good in terms of their ability to produce some of the fields. Discoveries have not kept up in terms of the quality and size.

He uses this as a non-bank financial. Likes their mix of product. Dividend is okay. Strong management and a good balance sheet. Usually yielding a little better than the banks. Current yield of 3.7%.

(A Top Pick Feb 21/14. Down 5.8%.) Still thinks this is suffering under a cloud, basically because of the bribery scandal. Thinks this is all past history. Good assets, including Highway 407. If you take those away, you have 2000 engineers that you are getting next to nothing. Yield of 2.2%.

Has been beaten up for good reason. They have a lot of coal-fired plants in Alberta. When the price of gas is down, coal is not a great place to be. Recently bought some assets in New Zealand. Thinks the dividend is safe, but can’t see anything in capital gains. Prefers others.
