Markets. A lot of what has happened on the TSX is commodity driven. There was a breakdown in gold and silver in the last 2-3 weeks. Oil has now fallen about 10%. Coal has broken down. The commodity cycle seems to be done for now. Some things always get sold off too much when we have a correction, but that means you can find some real bargains. The correction that we saw coming out of 2009 has been a moderate, kind of grinding slow recovery. There has been a gradual growth in earnings and gradual growth in employment, particularly in the US. There have also been some negative trends. Europe is flirting with recession and deflation. China is not as strong as we would like. However, we are seeing good, solid earnings.

Canadian banks? The Canadian banks have the wonderful position of basically controlling the entire financial industry in Canada. They have been making money hand over fist. Even through the recession, all the banks just continued on. You can buy them for less than 14X earnings. With companies that have this kind of competitive advantage, paying dividends of over 3% and trading at less than 14X earnings, you would be crazy not to own them. He owns National (NA-T), which he thinks has the best growth prospects in Canada, Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS-T), which he thinks has the best international growth prospects and Toronto Dominion (TD-T) because of its expansion and retail banking.

Funds management is a terrifically competitive business. It is very difficult to have a sustained advantage. This company has not had great results year after year like it needed to. This is a turnaround story at this point.

This had been a terrific story. The stock had quadrupled. He thinks it went too far and doesn’t think it was ever worth $90 a share. It will probably revert to some good value of around $18-$20. If you own, consider selling.

2014-09-22 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart BCE-T BCE Inc.

It is pretty hard to find quality blue chip companies with yields over 5%. As people are exiting the commodities and economically sensitive stocks, they are gravitating towards the blue chip income producers, not economically sensitive. Dividend yield of 5.18%.

Stock has had a bit of a rocky ride. They’ve had a history of missing their earnings’ forecasts. However, the last quarter they actually hit it out of the park. The company gave a pretty bullish forecast on conditions going forward. Commercial garbage is economically sensitive and now that the US economy is recovering again, the amount of commercial garbage is going up again. They are budgeting for acquisitions and he thinks they will grow that way as well as organically.

2014-09-22 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BPY.UN-T Brookfield Property Partners

A tremendously large landlord in the US with some of the best retail and commercial property there are. He would prefer the top company, Brookfield Asset Management (BAM.A-T) so that you can participate not only in this company, but you also participate in Brookfield Office and Brookfield Infrastructure.

2014-09-22 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CGX-T Cineplex Inc

Their problem is that they can’t make gold out of straw, so if Hollywood does not produce any good movies, there is less ticket and concession revenue. There are some good movies coming down the pipe and that should help a lot. Increasingly they are selling an upscale product with VIP seats. Right now the stock is cheap.

2014-09-22 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CNQ-T Canadian Natural Rsrcs

For the 1st time in decades, the US is in a net energy surplus, they are producing more energy than they are using. He doesn’t believe this is a game changer for the oil sands. This oil will get produced and will find its way to market. Whether that market is in Asia or the US, he doesn’t know. Every year this company gets more efficient in their production, and as they ramp and scale up, the cost per barrel of the refining process goes down and down. Because they are on an inexhaustible reserve with no exploration costs, they have a real advantage over traditional production/exploration companies. He is a believer in this.

(A Top Pick Oct 31/13. Up 4.03%.) Still likes the name. Particularly likes the Sobey’s/Safeway deal because he thinks it gives them some expansion opportunities in the West.

2014-09-22 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ENF-T Enbridge Income Fund Holdings

Just acquired $1.7 billion from Enbridge (ENB-T), so they are going to have to raise money. His guess is that there will be some common and preferred shares coming out. One of the great things for a company like this is that the cost of making acquisitions is at an all-time low, because there is so much money available from institutional investors who are seeking yield. Feels the deal is probably constructive for holders. A solid income producer.

He was skeptical about this when it went public. However, has been very impressed with their success in monetizing, particularly mobile platforms. There is a lot of competition in the social/media space and there are always new things coming up. Next earnings come out on Oct 28, which may surprise on the upside.

(A Top Pick Oct 31/13. Up 16.71%.) As the premier investment bank globally, this made a lot of money taking companies public. At this price, you are buying the company at around BV. They will have the scope to increase their dividend once the federal authorities are convinced that their Tier 1 Capital is high enough.
