Markets.  It is the start of the year and everyone should sit back and think about what they are going to do this year.  He is not a trader, doesn’t worry about moving averages or death crosses.  The biggest battle long term is between your emotions and your brain.  He does not know what the stock market is going to do.  In the short term, movements in the market affect returns, but he looks for good quality companies.  Buy at a good price and hold them for the long term.  The market is inefficient in the short term.  Value gets recognized over the long term.  Over time over half your return comes from dividends.  The world is changing so that now you are not buying products, but services or experiences.

Gold.  He does not understand how you value an asset that does not produce anything and is not useful for anything.  It is a sentiment play.  They stopped buying it when all the things that would make investors nervous happened.

People frame companies.  They think this one is a tech company, but he thinks it is a consumer entertainment company and a very good one.  They are selling a consumer branded product.  PE is 9 times with an enormous amount of cash and will likely increase the yield on the dividend.  He expects a share buyback.  He thinks there is tremendous upside here.

Announced they hired investment bankers with the view of selling themselves.  It is cheaper than its US peers.  They are not trading at the multiple of the US companies.  It is up 7-8% despite the market being down.  It is hard to say what will happen.  He feels the value is 15% higher than it is trading at right now.  He likes the company even if it does not get taken over.

(Top Pick Feb 4/2015, Down 7.87%)  He still feels this is the best bank to own.  The Canadian market is a low growth market.  This one has been oversold on expectations from Latin America.

Stock vs. Stock.  BTE-T vs. CPG-T.  He would prefer CPG-T for its assets if a gun was to his head.  It will still be there, but not sure if BTE-T will be around for long.

2016-01-05 BUY Must be logged in to use chart CGX-T Cineplex Inc

Stock vs. Stock. CGX-T vs. DIS-N.  CGX-T is in the exhibition business and DIS-N is in the marketing and production business.  CGX-T is a very smart company and he has owned it for years.  They make money on the concessions, airline entertainment, the advertising and the movies.  They are building out theatres into entertainment complexes now to add to their revenue streams.  DIS-N makes money with their movies, but to him CGX-T is less risky.

A sector he likes, but has not gone into.  Everyone recognizes the demographic imperative.  We have more people over 65 than under 14 for the first time in history.  The evidence is that they can make money and these guys are one of the better operators.  It is more like a hotel than an apartment building in that there is high staffing.

It is a tolling business.  It has been punished unfairly.  This is true of a number of companies in the mid-stream business.  The infrastructure businesses are not bad at all.  They have steady income and are hard to complete with.  This is a good time to go bottom fishing.

Everyone knows they found themselves in the middle of a controversy when some of their mortgage brokers had given them some bad paper.  None of the mortgages have defaulted.  HCG-T’s stock had fallen in half.  So he is constructive on the stock.  PE is 6.5.  The bad mortgages were short term, off the books within a year.  You get a yield of 3.25%.

They have the largest sky scraper in Calgary which is leased out for 20 years.  This is another low growth, steady eddy REIT and the yield is probably going to increase.  6.7% yield.
