Markets.  The US is better than Canada, not fabulous, but better.  When people have jobs they spend money and when they spend money they drive the economy.  He is not seeing any inflation in the US, well under 2% not counting energy and food.  There is no increase in wages so someone is making money.  Canada is not so good.  The employment picture is mediocre and the oil price thing will affect the west.  The low dollar should help Ontario and Quebec but we have yet to see it spill though.  With regards to currencies, they always over shoot.  $.82-$.84 is the correct range for the Canadian dollar right now.  You have to pick stocks individually.  A lot of REITs have yields of 6% and yet the treasury pays .75%, so if it goes up, does anyone really care?  There is too much fuss about not very much.

The stock got massacred.  They are in Alberta and people think no one there will buy a car or truck again, which is unlikely to be the case.  Car sales are going to go down and people are putting off maintenance.  But ACQ-T has dealerships all across Canada, so he thinks it has been oversold.  Growing by acquisition can be done by good management and it becomes a good strategy but if you are overpaying and there is no barrier to competitors then you are just a ‘me too’.

Two or three bad quarters in a row.  They have to compete for bids, and so have to bid finely and can’t always build the project for what they bid.  It is a tricky sector to play.  None of these companies have done very well.

He is zero weighted in Canadian energy stocks.  There are a number of cognitive mistakes people make about stocks that have gone down this much.  Just because an energy stock has fallen to half it does not make it a bargain.  There is a lot of oil in storage and demand is not growing as fast as in past economic recoveries.

They should stop having derailments.  Because no one can build pipelines any more.  Oil by rail is the driver.  Prices have come up for these stocks.  The advantage of rail costs over truck costs has diminished.  He owns CSX-N and thinks CP-T is a better bargain.  Stay away from Canadian railroads.

2015-03-24 DON'T BUY Must be logged in to use chart COKE-Q Coca-Cola Bottling

Do I want to bet against Warren Buffet?  Sugar and fizzy water?  Will it sell to Millennials?  An unbelievable track record of making money for 100 years.  He prefers Doctor Pepper.  70% of profits of COKE-Q are from outside of the US and the high dollar de-values their profits.  Doctor pepper is more domestic.

A 6.69% dividend.  He doesn’t care if interest rates go up a bit.  It is owned by the Sobeys family.  They expanded to Western Canada so there is more growth coming to them.  The terrific dividend is probably still going to grow in 2015.

The backbone of the internet.  Their products can be replaced by new and better hardware.  They will have more competitors than in the past as software can do a lot of what they do.  It is a value trap.

It pays and increases a good dividend.  Valuation will not grow substantially.  It is very stable and profitable.  This one is how you get rich over time.

It’s like a buyer’s group.  They are a toll road for drugs, getting profit off a spread between the usual price and a lower one they negotiate based on the bulk they are dealing with.  The payout ratio is small so it can go up a lot.  You don’t care who has the best drug.

2015-03-24 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart GM-N General Motors Corporation

(Top Pick Mar 10/14, Up 7.38%)  Light trucks and SUVs are going nuts in the US and that is where the auto makers make their money.  Still a good buy.  There are a lot of new cars being sold as the fleet gets replenished.

It is probably the best investment bank in the world, and they passed their stress test so they could increase their dividend.  He also expects share buy backs.  Buying back shares when at book value is a very good use of capital.

(Top Pick Mar 10/14, Up 10.44%) A very high quality REIT.  Build a building, lease it for 20 years, mortgage it for 20 years and lock everything in.  It does not matter what happens to interest rates.  It is a very sound, conservative pick.  They had a stumble in Calgary in 2008 but they got through that and the building is fully leased.
