Economy. China, in the past 4 weeks, is down 30% from its peak, mostly because of a bull market that was really driven by government policies that were urging investors to take aggressive bets. He doesn’t think people realize what the risk are out there, or how far they are being pushed out the curve by these continued Central Banks positions of zero interest rate policies. In the end, they are not getting the desired effects of trickle-down economics. There is a flurry of individual investors who have never invested before and are being dragged into the market. He doesn’t know how sophisticated they are or really know what they are doing and are the ones who panicked in and are panicking out. There have been a lot of questions about Chinese accounting and other things. Doesn’t think the average institutional investor is really throwing a lot of money into the Chinese market.

2015-07-07 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart AGU-T Agrium

(A Top Pick June 2/14. Up 41.82%.) Agricultural sector is starting to look more interesting. What is really interesting is the pop we have seen in corn in the past 1-1.5 months. That is always a good lead indicator for fertilizer stocks. Valuations are getting up there, so he sold his holdings 3-4 months ago.

Would be more inclined to play Visa (V-N) in this area, as it is showing better International growth. They are all facing the same headwinds of more competition from online payments. Visa has done a better job even though it is a little bit more expensive. You are better off owning the better grower.

2015-07-07 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart BAC-N Bank of America

(A Top Pick June 2/14. Up 10.77%.) US bank stocks are looking interesting here. They’re coming off a period where they were not able to pay dividends and earnings growth had been muted. He likes the leverage on this. He traded out of this recently because of his overall negative views on the stock market.

2015-07-07 BUY Must be logged in to use chart BNS-T Bank of Nova Scotia

You could do a lot worse than owning this. Canadian banks are struggling a little on the earnings growth side right now. There was some changes on derivative trading in the last budget that are going to sneak up on them a little, but he doesn’t think that impacts this bank as much as some of the other players. They’ve had the better International strategy, so there are a few red flags, but he is comfortable with the Canadian banks.

He is warming up more to the large oil companies, but he wouldn’t call himself a bull on oil. Thinks OPEC is going to draw more of a line in the sand on defending a $60-$70 oil price. That gives him comfort that we are not heading to $30-$40 oil. They hedged forward all this year’s  production at better than $80 a barrel and are now using their balance sheet to make accretive acquisitions. They are buying some of the depressed, distressed juniors. Dividend yield of 10.59%.

This is one of those stocks that is always a Buy. If you asked him for one pick that he would have owned for the last 20 years, it would be this one. They continue to deliver on every metric. Valuation is still not that excessive. Thinks they can do something better than $6 in earnings next year, and that is still under a 20 multiple.

PayPal when it splits from eBay? He would be reticent to buy this right now. In its early days eBay basically owned its industry and it continues to dominate market share. However, with Apple pay and all these other things coming in, there is going to be a lot more competition and it is going to be tougher for them.

2015-07-07 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart GE-N General Electric

Have started shedding assets and are getting down to more of a core operation. For a longer-term safe hold, they are good. Getting out of the old-style conglomerate of multiple businesses and getting more focused on industrial companies, which ultimately probably gives a higher multiple on the stock. For the long-term it will be fine, but it has just had a tremendous run off the bottom, and he doesn’t find it particularly cheap.

Feels this is a Hold at best. He would probably be doing what the Canadian government has been doing, cashing in on the moves in the last couple of years. Feels the auto cycle is slowing down a little and these guys have a hard time generating earnings growth in Europe and in the far east. The stronger US$ is obviously going to hurt them.

2015-07-07 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart GOOG-Q Google

(A Top Pick June 2/14. Down 4.96%.) There has been a lot of negative opinion on this recently, but it reminds him of Microsoft when it was in the mid-$20 and people were saying there was no more growth. This hasn’t even slowed down its earnings growth. The catalyst could be some of their outside assets, such as the Android operating system, which owns 70% of the smart phone market globally. He likes this and thinks it is a great long-term story.

2015-07-07 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart LNR-T Linamar Corp

Had a tremendous run over the last couple of years. It has beaten earnings something like 12 out of the last 13 quarters. The valuation multiple compared to Magna (MG-T) and Martinrea (MRE-T) is somewhat higher. Well positioned, but he finds the valuation is higher and he just doesn’t know if they’ll keep beating estimates. Not overly bullish on the sector right now. (See Top Picks.)

2015-07-07 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart MRE-T Martinrea

Even though valuation has moved up a lot in the past year, it is cheaper than the rest of the group in cash flow and earnings. More importantly, they have stuck money into new programs and facilities over the past couple of years and thinks they are just turning round now to the harvesting of those operations. They have a lot of new programs coming into place. You are looking at 10%-15% earnings growth a year at least, over the next 3 years. They are the biggest player on aluminum parts in cars, which is one of the highest areas of growth. Higher European luxury growth. Also, the Cdn$ benefits them. Dividend yield of 0.89%.

New management is doing such a better job than prior management and is starting to resurrect the value of some of their assets. They own the operating system for 90% of the PCs globally, and will continue to do that. Also, becoming a better play on the Cloud as well. You are getting all of this for a 16 or 17 multiple. They have a massive cash balance that they can use for further acquisitions.
