Market. He doesn’t believe that Trump is going to be able to deliver, even close, on everything that he says. The market is taking all the positives of infrastructure, building, re-spending, re-inflation of the economy, and that interest rates don’t matter. On the trade agreements, you are already hearing stuff out of China and Saudi Arabia. There is going to be a quid pro quo out there. Donald Trump can’t go off ripping up trade agreements and saying that everything is coming back to the US, without some retaliation. Emerging markets are off more than 5% because they can’t handle the strong US$. Some of the US stocks that rallied the most are the ones that will also be hurt. There are a lot of things going on that are more to do with the short-term flow of money than the fundamentals of how you look at this down the road.

(A Top Pick Nov 3/15. Down 7.87%.) Last quarter was good. He is a big believer in the IOS system. The multiples are ridiculously cheap.

He would have a hard time advocating buying or owning this, based on its valuation and its ability to generate cash. They are doing a phenomenal job of owning a lot of businesses, but are doing it by spending a lot of money and not generating a lot for shareholders. Valuations are pretty nosebleed territory.

This was a split off from Alcoa (AA-N). He wasn’t a big fan of the combined company, and personally wouldn’t own either one right now. There is still a global glut of aluminum.

If you don’t own this, he doesn’t have a problem with you buying a small position here. This is beautifully positioned for a more positively shaped yield curve and valuation. They will probably start paying some dividends. He just thinks it has been a little too far and too fast. There will be a chance to get this cheaper once the initial fever cools off a little.

On the basis of growth, valuation, and where they are positioned in wireless and wireline, he would rank them as Rogers (RCI.B-T), Québecor (QBR.A-T), Telus (T-T) and finally BCE.

Wells Fargo (WFC-N) or Citigroup (C-N)? He prefers this one. Wells Fargo problems have been dealt with, but they are not going to go away in a hurry. The brand and the consumer sentiment has been hurt, and is going to hurt them a lot longer than most people are recognizing.

2016-11-16 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CAT-N Caterpillar

*Short* This has a little over $3 in earnings, and is trading at over 30X forward earnings. They’ve missed earnings in the past couple of quarters. The machinery capital spending business is slowing down because the mining industry has slowed down. They are starting to sell their own used equipment on their website, because there is not as much demand for the new stuff. The price is dropping at a 5% annual rate on what they are selling,. Dividend yield of 3.3%. (Analysts’ price target is $82.17.)

2016-11-16 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart CM-T Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce

Valuation wise, this is probably the cheapest of the banks right now. The US acquisition they did is going to negatively impact earnings for the next couple of quarters. That may cause it to underperform the group to a large degree. They also have the biggest consumer exposure out of all the Canadian banks. If you are worried about the Canadian housing market and the Canadian high consumer debt, you are going to be a little bit more cautious on this, despite its cheaper valuation. This would not be his top pick in financials.

Has an issue with REITs in general. He doesn’t see much growth. A lot of people really love this one. It is the positioning and the growth in their health care facilities. He gets that, but his problem is the valuation. It is basically trading at 16X enterprise value to EBITDA. You are paying an extremely high multiple, which is a bit at risk if interest rates start to go higher. He wouldn’t be buying any REITs.

(A Top Pick Nov 3/15. Down 88.26%.) This was just a bad call in retrospect. BREXIT, their US competition in some of their key drugs, and their high debt created a disaster for them. He doesn’t know if they even survive.

Content is still king. This is one of the best growth stories in media. Kids’ content lasts forever. They actually did a reselling agreement into China not too long ago. Some of this stuff does well internationally. They are paying down the debt and generating free cash flow. Dividend yield of 1.03%. (Analysts’ price target is $9.72.)

Have been delivering phenomenally well in the last couple of years. When you realize they had zero mobile ads when they went public a couple of years ago, and now the growth of the company over 70% of their revenues, they have done a phenomenal job of monetizing their growth. Trading at about 25X next year’s earnings. Still one of the great growth companies out there.

From the point of view of safety and dividend, this company fits that bill very well. It is not cheap, but none of the utility stocks are. In a rising interest rate environment, they are going to be a little bit more at risk, which probably accounts for some of the weakness in the stock. It has an effective monopoly.
