Markets. This is the 4th largest bull market ever, and he thinks investors are looking a bit overly bullish right now. He is concerned now, as he was in 2007. Eg. Qualcomm (QCOM-Q) just announced a $10 billion share buyback. They are using some of their existing cash, but are going to float a debt issue as well. This is what the QE and “over low” interest rates are doing. They are making companies do risky things. Companies borrow money at low rates and buy back their own stock, which will move up the earnings and put some bid in the market and drive up some financial assets. In the end, where is the economic value? You haven’t added a job. You haven’t added an acquisition. You haven’t added to your suite of products. You haven’t done anything except inflate the value of financial assets. To him, this is depreciating the currency (except for the US$) to keep it going, in the end. This worries him. There is a lot of air underneath this market, and if it ever starts to unwind…. and it could happen in a heartbeat. After 5 years of these low interest rates, where is economic global growth? People want to make money, but more importantly they don’t want to lose money.

None of us know what the real impact of the new iWatch will be. This company has always been good with the consumer devices. They are very smart about it in the way they package it. He thinks it will be a win. He can’t see any downside to it at this point.

Has been beaten up incredibly in the last couple of days, on an accounting story. Doesn’t know what the potentials could be. It looks like there is an investigation, but he doesn’t know any more about that. The market tends to sell now and ask questions later. He would be inclined to try to get more information by watching the newspapers. You don’t want to necessarily sell it if there isn’t really an issue at all.

2015-03-09 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BAC-N Bank of America

Has been lightening a little on the US banks recently, but is not worried that much. We are not going to see another collapse of the banking system. This is at a turning point where some of the acquisitions they made at the bottom of the cycle are starting to benefit a little bit more and you will start to get a dividend paid a little bit more. Valuations are fairly low historically. Feels this has the most upside leverage between it, Citigroup (C-N) and J.P. Morgan (JPM-N).

He has been up and down a couple of times with this, and is not buying it this time. He can see why people would want to take a shot at it with the C series just coming out now. They may have missed the boat, and a lot of the C series buyers may have moved on.

In this environment, he is looking for things that he thinks are not expensive and that have some growth potential. He likes the area they are in. This is basically moving healthcare and the distribution of pharmaceuticals more onto an online system like the Obama care. They throw off cash and use their cash to make acquisitions to fill in their product line. Trading at about 18-19 times forward earnings.

This is primarily a gas play. It is hard to get very bullish about gas prices still. There is still a lot of excess supply. Because it is coming off the shale, a lot of it is getting burned off too. Also, has a stretched balance sheet.

2015-03-09 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart COST-Q Costco Wholesale

This is still a good growth story. They continue to expand and are going to go more global. Have a great business model. Another advantage they have is with the strong US$, which is impacting negatively a lot of exporting companies. But as a buyer of international goods, those costs are coming down. Valuation of US retailers is quite high right now. Trading at almost 29X estimated earnings.

His problem with this is that a lot of what is supporting the stock is the dividend. The dividend right now is probably around 130%-140% of what their annual cash flow would be, especially once their hedges start rolling off. Doesn’t know that the dividend is necessarily sustainable at these levels. They have a great stable of properties to drill on.

(A Top Pick March 17/04. Down 49.41%.) Sold his holdings last July at around $2.90, and has recently bought back in. Copper is fairly washed out. It is hard not to worry about the situation in China. Stocks have come off enough that they are becoming better value.

Everybody is devaluing in the International currencies. At some point, he believes that you need some gold in your portfolio to protect you. This one has a decent mine production and levered to the upside of the gold price. He doesn’t want geopolitical risks. The risk is that you have a higher breakeven on it.

Has been the key growth stock in America for the last 50 years. A great collection of assets. They continue to make fantastic acquisitions, and they integrate their assets very well. They cross sell, from the theme parks to the movies to the toys to the games. Trading at about 20X earnings.

2015-03-09 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ECA-T Encana Corp

Likes what new management has done since they have come in and taken over the company. Running it extremely well and are consolidating the assets in a better way, which is tough to do in this environment. Balance sheet is a little stretched, but the financing they did is going to help that to some degree. Recently bought into this a little, and is comfortable with it.

Still a little early for the drillers, particularly the fracers where this one is placed. Feels they have a couple of very, very ugly quarters in front of them, and earnings revisions are still coming. He would be more inclined to buy the unlevered producers.
