Gold. Gold had the biggest drop since 1980. If any asset goes down 10% in one day, it is not fundamentals driving it. It probably happened because gold had gone through $1500, which triggered a lot of selling from technically driven trading programs, margin calls being triggered, etc. It is still the best performing asset class even after today’s $140 selloff. Precious metal assets are likely to provide good performance over time, as long as central banks continue to print money.

Markets. Equities are still the place to be this year. In terms of yield and valuation this is probably the roughest patch we are going to have. Once we get through this we are likely to see, as we have seen in the last couple of years, a bit of a move up in the 2nd half of the year.

2013-04-15 TOP PICK AEM-T Agnico-Eagle Mines

One of the lowest cost producers in gold mines and have mines in political stable countries. Will increase production 20% over the next couple of years. Raised its dividend 10% last year. Yield of 2.71%. Even if gold stays at its present price, this is still a very profitable company.

2013-04-15 COMMENT ATP-T Atlantic Power Corp.

There is a Class-action lawsuit so obviously there are some aggrieved shareholders who felt the recent sale of assets was very badly handled. Obviously, the company had some issues and had to raise some cash. Effectively the last 5 years progress has been wiped out. This has been a mess all around.

2013-04-15 TOP PICK BNS-T Bank of Nova Scotia

One third of their earnings is through international exposure, which appeals to him. You don’t have weakness to the North American economies in the same way. Acquired ING Direct. Raised the dividend twice by almost 10% in the last 15 months. Yield of 4. 2%.

2013-04-15 COMMENT BRK.B-N Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (B)

Have had some excellent investments come good for them. Another major driver was their acquisition of the Burlington Northern Rail as rail stocks have been pretty strong. It is probably undervalued if you do a sum of the parts valuation. The major risk is if Warren Buffett should step down. That would create a major selloff.

2013-04-15 COMMENT COS-T Canadian Oil Sands

Very volatile stock and depends on what the price of energy is. Because they use gas to boil up the oil sands, if the price of gas is low and oil is high, it is a pretty good situation. That hasn’t done a great deal for the share price. Have actually raised the dividend 3 times since they cut it by 70% in 2011. Reasonable yield.

2013-04-15 COMMENT CPG-T Crescent Point Energy Corp

Very well run energy stock. There has been some weakness in the last couple of years but is still a very well run company and continues to maintain its production. One of the less gassy plays.

2013-04-15 HOLD DH-T Davis and Henderson

A dying industry because it is cheque writing. They have been successful in migrating into other areas. Only 40% of their revenue comes from printing cheques. 22% is from things like loans servicing and repossession. Another 17% each is the new technology they have been doing in the US. Largest provider of point-of-sale mortgage origination software. Earnings growth has not been great because they have had to spend about $300 million to issue a lot of stocks. You get a 5.9% yield while you wait.

2013-04-15 TOP PICK LNR-T Linamar Corp

Second-largest auto-parts maker in Canada. Primarily the drive trains, which is the most important part of the car. Probably have the best growth prospects. $2.3 billion in their order book. Have exposure to growth in North America. Have been buying cheap factories in Europe as well as opening new factories in places like China and the emerging markets. Dividend yield 1.37%.

2013-04-15 BUY MRE-T Martinrea

Third-largest auto parts manufacturer. This is a play on what you think North American production is going to be. Has been expanding its production. As outsourcing by the auto companies continues, it should be okay. (See Top Picks.)

2013-04-15 COMMENT PFE-N Pfizer Inc

This is a stock that has been a huge disappointment for every value investor for a very long time. It has had a very decent performance over the last year as the worries about patent expiries has died away somewhat. Pharmas as a whole have been a very disappointing group. This is still well below what it was 10 years ago. You get a decent dividend yield. You might consider buying the pharmaceuticals ETFs, which gives you a basket and you are not exposed to any one company.

2013-04-15 DON'T BUY PKX-N Posco

Korean steel company. World-class facility. Stock is off 15% over the last year. This is a warrant on your view of what global economic growth is going to be, what Chinese industrial demand is going to be and, therefore, incredibly volatile. Looks cheap but the question is, are the earnings sustainable. Steel stocks are cyclicals and you buy them when they look dreadful and sell them when everything looks wonderful. At the moment they look okay, but sentiment is turning and you don’t want to be there at the moment.
