Markets. The reason for strength in the US$ is pretty straightforward. They stopped quantitative easing (QE), so the $85 billion a month they used for buying bonds, became zero by the end of 2014. Europe is buying €60 billion of bonds a month in things like Portugal. Japan is adding a 2nd dose of Abenomics. So essentially all the banks globally, except for the Fed, are trying to weaken their currencies. This is why the Swiss National Bank dropped the link with the euro at 120. This is going to continue until such time as the Fed says “maybe the economy is weaker than we thought”. If they raise rates in June, as suggested, just watch US$ continue to climb. Investors probably want to be reducing their weight in US$’s and look at multinational companies out of Europe, which do a lot of exports.

2015-03-13 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart AGT-T AGT Food & Ingredients

Lentils. 10% of the world’s food intake is pulses, which is lentils, peas, etc. Was a hot growth stock after it went public in the late 2000’s. Rained a lot in 2010 which wiped out the lentil crop in Saskatchewan. It has come back and they do $1 billion in sales. The largest global exporter of lentils with operations in Turkey and Australia. Started to get into food ingredients, so have gone into a joint venture. Yield of 2.31%.

(A Top Pick March 17/14. Up 17.24%.) The underlying fundamentals continue to drive and we have a relatively strong economy, and this company is able to continue to expand its cash flow. Very happy to continue holding this.

2015-03-13 DON'T BUY Must be logged in to use chart AQN-T Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp

All the interest rate sensitives, which include the utilities, are affected by the fear of rising longer-term interest rates. On this one, there is an uncertainty and the stock has come off pretty sharply.

2015-03-13 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ATP-T Atlantic Power Corp.

Verizon (VZ-N) or Atlantic Power (ATP-T)? He would go for Verizon which gives you more security of income. This company cut its dividend in half, and there is never just one dividend cut usually.

2015-03-13 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BAC-N Bank of America

Bank of America (BAC-N) or Banco Santander (SAN-N)? Banco Santander has a much lower dividend yield. This bank is a play on the health of the domestic US economy. If you are comfortable with that, this is probably the one to stay with.

There is a new CEO in place. This is a company where you stay at arms length. The civil aviation business is a really, really rough game. The C100 is late and is over budget. When you are a relatively smaller player, it becomes a lot more serious.

2015-03-13 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BHI-N Baker-Hughes

Being acquired by Halliburton (HAL-N). The oil service sector is not really a place you want to be in. If you own this, you might just as well accept the Halliburton offer as it is a larger, more liquid stock with a wider geographical range.  Not an area that he likes.

2015-03-13 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BNS-T Bank of Nova Scotia

This bank has Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia. If you are concerned about the problems in the domestic market, this and Toronto Dominion (TD-T) are the 2 banks that have non-Canadian exposure. This bank has been an under performer because of problems in its emerging-market book. If you are going to buy one bank, it would be this one.

2015-03-13 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CJR.B-T Corus Entertainment (B)

(A Top Pick March 17/14. Down 4.55%.) Losing its long-time CEO which is a big game changer for them. In essence, this is speciality programming. 2nd largest French language programmer by buying Astral Media, and he doesn’t think this is reflected in the stock yet.

(A Top Pick March 17/14. Up 1.92%.) Just treading water. This is an Alberta-based utility. Basically seen as a proxy as to what is happening in interest rates. He continues to like this. 4.5% dividend yield.

2015-03-13 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CWB-T Canadian Western Bank

This bank is off 20% in the last year. It is well-run and conservatively run, but is down purely on sentiment because of the oil patch. They are not nearly as exposed to energy as people think. Thinks it is on sale. Probably worth looking at.

2015-03-13 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CX-N Cemex SA

One of the top 3 cement producers globally and has an enormous range. With the financial crisis, being geographically diversified didn’t work. It hasn’t done badly over the last 5 years, however it is a construction play. If you are worried about the outlook for the economy, you should consider taking a loss on this if you own.

This definitely has headwinds with Greece, which has a government that is going to default on their debt. As one of the major European banks, this has been affected by the possibility of a Greek exit. However, anybody that has exposure to Greece should be out.

2015-03-13 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart DII.B-T Dorel Industries

40% of revenue is from bikes, but also has baby strollers. They bought a Hong Kong based manufacturer of car seats, which makes them #3 in China, which should be a very interesting growth part. Trading at 15X earnings with a yield of about 4.07%.
