Markets. Valuations spook him a bit. 10 of the indicators are near or at all-time highs, and there is only one thing unfavourable, and that is the trend. The market wants to go up, but everything else is equal to 2000 or 2007 in terms of the level of valuation. Be careful because you have done very well, especially in the US. Take some profits. Canada has been a pretty lacklustre performer, only up about 4%. A lot of the defensive stocks are down year-to-date and are interest rate sensitive because people are worried about the rates going up. Also, resources are such a big element within Canada, it is dragging down the overall valuation and making earnings look pretty expensive. To be defensive, you want to hang out in things like utilities, REITs, some of the consumer stocks and some of the financials. You might also want to have some short or medium term bonds as well, because there is not much difference in the yield you are getting, but they are a lot less volatile.

Mutual Funds or ETF’s? Both are vehicles for gaining experience to the equity market. Over the long run, equities are the highest returning asset. To get that higher return, you have to put up with the volatility. One of the things you can control is costs. ETF’s are a cheaper way of getting exposure to the market. However, you are just getting the return of the index, whichever index you are choosing. In the mutual fund, you will have an active manager, but most active managers do not beat the index. However, if you can find one, you will probably do better in down markets as well as getting a lot of the upside.

This has turned itself from a metal basher into manufactured products. As the weight of a car or a plane comes down, aluminum is used more and more. Over the last year, this one is off about 7%. It is probably worthwhile putting in a longer-term position, as they should do well because of its major product and what it does with it will be used more and more.

This has been enormously successful. The difficulty now is that it is the biggest company in the world by market cap and the actual rate of growth is slowing. If you have some profits, you might want to take some.

This has lots of moving parts and you own the shares in the underlying subsidiaries. If you are not comfortable with the way this company goes about using the valuation or realizing capital gains, it is probably not one you want to be involved with. This is one of his recommendations.

2015-06-03 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CGO-T COGECO Inc

Second biggest cable supplier in Ontario and Québec, along with 400,000 subscribers in Pennsylvania, Florida and Maryland. The big thing is, it is purely a distributor. It doesn’t have the content, so is indifferent as to which channels you choose to pick and pay for. Trading at 10X earnings and has a 1.9% dividend yield. Share price is down 13% while it is the least affected of any of the telcos.

(A Top Pick May 27/14. Up 27.93%.) Had a lousy summer with a bunch of disappointing movies. Looks like a really good slate of movies coming up. In the meantime they make money on popcorn. They also have the additional advertising business which is now growing quite rapidly.

This has been the class act in the mutual fund business. Mutual funds are in secular decline, but this one has done everything right. They have been getting market share.

2015-06-03 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CSH.UN-T Chartwell Seniors Housing

This really depends on your view on the whole retirement residence area. Demographics are good because of our aging population. One of the difficulties is getting staff. Labour costs are something you have to watch quite closely. Has come off in the last few months, mostly because of worries about what is going to happen with US interest rate increases. If you don’t think rates are going to go up much in the next year, this is a pretty good buying opportunity.

2015-06-03 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CWB-T Canadian Western Bank

This has been tarred with the oil collapse so it is off 28% in the last year. Even though it has been much more oil concentrated in the past, it knows its business and it runs it really well. Yield of 1.94%.

This is basically 3 things. Bikes, baby seats, strollers, and just acquired the third-biggest manufacturer of car seats in China. The 3rd thing is furniture. Haven’t really gone anywhere in the past couple of years, partly because they have been trying to get their cost structure under control as well as the higher US$. Still likes this.

(A Top Pick May 27/14. Down 49.77%.) Still has a very sound balance sheet and still has lots of deep-sea oil rigs. There is lots of new business coming and they have the most modern rigs. Unfortunately, the market doesn’t care. He had recommended Selling this back in March, take the losses and move on.. When the prices seem to have stabilized, there will be a bunch of companies that need their rigs.

Has had a wonderful run up. They have done some accretive acquisitions and the market likes what it is seeing. With this you have some downside protection if Mr. Watsa thinks the market is looking toppy. It is one that you can stick in your bottom drawer for the next 5-20 years, and you will end up doing pretty well.

This is a great consolidator of the businesses and the areas that it works in, including healthcare and government. One of the big, big success stories of the Canadian market over the last 10 years. Growth by acquisition and is probably due for another.

2015-06-03 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart GM-N General Motors Corporation

Auto sales have been at the highest level since 2005. This one has had some specific problems, obviously the recall and the new CEO having to deal with those issues. With lower gasoline prices, it should help the producers of larger vehicles. They are doing pretty well in China although the slowdown there has been hurting a bit. He would prefer a Canadian auto parts manufacturer.
