Market. The BREXIT vote is something that investors should pay attention to. If you are a blue-collar job and haven’t got any benefit from globalization over the last 15-20 years, the “elites” don’t have much interest in doing anything for you. Obama care can be thrown into that basket. By the end of October next year, you could have completely new leadership in the 4 largest European economies.

The biggest company in terms of market cap. You get a 1.9% yield. The real questions being asked is “what have you done for me lately” and “what are you going to do for me now”. This has been a wonderful, wonderful start. This is probably not going to do any more than go in line with the market going forward.

This is the biggest Canadian wine company. Wine is a wonderful long term play on rising consumer income, and this is a wonderful company.

This has 2 parts, renewable energy and distribution in the US. Very, very dependable revenue streams. The difficulty is that it tends to be viewed as a bond proxy, and people have been hiding in it, which could be a headwind for it.

The difficulty with buying things before BREXIT is that you were buying it with a pound that was at its highest level in 18 months. It is up 15% post BREXIT because 75% of its revenues are from outside the UK, and it benefits from the weaker pound. However, the banks are really not a place you want to be if the UK housing market starts to pull back.

This has not been covering itself in glory. If you want carbon free baseload power, you have to have nuclear power. Wind, solar and Hydro are not suitable for baseload. Over time, you would think there would be some demand for uranium, but this has been a disappointing stock. You need to see some power plants actually going online.

(A Top Pick June 3/15. Down 2.1%.) You are able to get the minimum cable package without having all the channels you don’t want. This is the “pipes”, it doesn’t own content. Has a nice dividend.

2016-10-19 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CJR.B-T Corus Entertainment (B)

Having to take cable channels you don’t want, everybody has really freaked out about this, because it has a lot of content. However, they have children’s and women’s programming which is probably the strongest area. A very high yield which appears to be safe. Still feels their content is good enough to actually make people want to watch it. A dividend yield of over 9%.

2016-10-19 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CM-T Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce

The difficulty has always been that it is a smallest of the big 5 banks, and has been the most accident prone. New management has done an excellent job in clearing things up. Have also sold their minority position in American Century Funds that hadn’t worked out. He would prefer one of the other banks.

(A Top Pick June 3/15. Down 6.69%.) Given what is happening in Alberta and with the Alberta housing market, this is down. They bought a vehicle financing business, and sold off their custodian and their PNC insurance business. He still likes it.

Looking at what the price used to be, doesn’t mean this is cheap, it just means that the price was really, really high. Whenever a company’s market cap gets bigger than the Royal Bank, you know you are in trouble. Avoid.

2016-10-19 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart G-T Goldcorp Inc

New CEO has replaced about two thirds of the operating management at mines. He is trying to cut $250 million out of the cost base. This has been a big, big laggard in gold companies. Dividend yield of 0.53%.

One of the big, long term successful companies. The big reason for the stock drop lately is Remicade, its largest drug. Pfizer has something which is going to be priced 5%-10% cheaper. If you are going to be in any of the large cap healthcare stocks, this is the one.

This has done well, but longer-term you would have to think it is not the stock you want to be in. It is mainly in developed markets, as opposed to emerging markets.

He wouldn’t worry about the possibility that this might go down. They have revamped operations pretty successfully. People still need to shop, and this has a wide enough offering to actually get some people going in. If it marks time for the next year or so, he wouldn’t worry too much.
