Markets. Technology earnings has been really good news and the companies are coming out with much better earnings. One of the encouraging things is that you are actually seeing some top line growth, not just cost cutting. Although companies, like Google, keeping a lid on costs is probably a major factor. This probably represents the start of a decent rebound. Particularly with the Fed not raising rates, we are now moving into an acceleration phase. The Fed, not raising rates when they led everybody to believe that they would, effectively means it is off the table, at least until sometime next year. The Chinese will do what they need to do to maintain growth, which maintains social stability. You have to feel that the enormous selloff in the commodities was somewhat overdone. We are probably going to see a pick up in Chinese growth from its low. That will help commodity prices, help the rest of the emerging markets and help Canada with central banks remaining on hold or do more easing. With the 15%-20% correction on August 24, you could say that we are on another leg of this Bull market.

This used to be regarded as a great play on infrastructure investment in the emerging world. It got hit very badly in the financial crisis. Longer-term it hasn’t done a great deal, which is a little bit surprising given its involvement with things like power infrastructure and civil engineering. Probably not a bad time to be picking it up if you believe, as he does, of higher growth in China and the emerging markets and the central banks remaining on Hold.

2015-10-23 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart AEM-T Agnico-Eagle Mines

Has good quality mines in safe jurisdictions of North America and Europe. With the takeover of Osisko (OSK0T) last year they were basically able to increase their output 30%. They are going to be producing 1.6 million ounces this year, and the all-in costs is under $1,000 an ounce, i.e, the sustaining costs not the cash costs, which is about $300 an ounce lower. Dividend yield of 1.12%.

2015-10-23 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BABA-N Alibaba Group Holding

A play on the Chinese consumer. It has pulled back a great deal. The Chinese market was off 30% in the 3rd quarter alone, which is pretty remarkable. The penetration of Internet sales in China will continue. The real question is, has confidence been shaken sufficiently by the crash in the stock market to persuade people to reign in their horns. One good thing about this company is that it is not a conspicuous consumption that the Communist Party has been targeting. As a long term play on the Chinese consumer, it is probably not a bad Buy now, but it might not actually go anywhere for the foreseeable future because people will be worried about China. Until we see some strength in Chinese domestic consumption, that may be enough to keep a lid on things.

2015-10-23 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CJR.B-T Corus Entertainment (B)

(A Top Pick Sept 16/14. Down 45.96%.) Down because the CRTC said you’re able to “pick and pay”. Therefore the landscape for the cable companies has changed. It’s the content you are going to want to keep because it is children. They are reporting bad numbers because they have been writing down the value of the radio stations, plus the advertising market has been soft. He still recommends this. Dividend yield of 9%.

2015-10-23 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart COS-T Canadian Oil Sands

They have a hostile bid from Suncor (SU-T). They own the same asset, Syncrude, an oil sands producer. This has been down over the last few years because the price of oil has gone down, also the whole oil sands situation and the difficulty in getting it to market. There is likely a higher bid forthcoming. Dividend yield of 2%.

This was a market favourite pre-financial crisis where it had too much debt. It is one of the most basic industries and has done relatively well. If you are looking for one play on global cement demand, this is the most global of them all.

Movie releases is still a very big part of the company, but the biggest by far are their networks NBC and ESPN. In general the stock has been pretty strong. This is trading at about 22X PE and you are only getting about 1% yield, so probably most of the good news is reflected in the price. If they have a boffo 4th quarter with Star Wars, it might still have some legs. Wait for a pullback.

2015-10-23 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart F-N Ford Motor

We are back to 16.5-17 million North American light vehicle sales. This stock has been pretty much in a sideways trend despite its excellent run in sales. He would prefer auto part manufacturers such as Linamar (LNR-T) or Magna (MG-T). They give you a bigger share in the models, plus you are getting into more auto manufacturing companies, giving you more growth.

Chrysler went bankrupt, but Fiat was able to come in and pick up the North American manufacturing/distribution and has been doing well. Italian car companies seem to be in favour at present. He would prefer auto part manufacturers such as Linamar (LNR-T) or Magna (MG-T). We are back to where auto sales are at a 10 year high.

Top line revenue growth has been pretty anaemic for years. Share price has been drifting down for most of the last 3 years and have been pretty aggressive in their revenue recognition. This has been in a range for the last 5 years. He would prefer Microsoft (MSFT-Q), which had a pretty good set of numbers recently.

The British government is selling their holdings and can do so because Lloyds has turned around. The share price is above what the British government paid to bail it out. It is doing sufficiently well and will probably start paying dividends.

2015-10-23 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart MS-N Morgan Stanley

Came out with fairly disappointing numbers. The volatility in the 3rd quarter really whacked the investment banks. All this has really done is to bring it back to where it was in 2011. If that volatility is not going to continue at the same level, you would have to think this is one of the better run and more tightly run investment banks. Also, it doesn’t have the commercial banking side as a distraction. If you want to be in an investment bank, this is one of the ones that you should consider.
