Markets. Feels the risks are more sided to the downside than to the upside. 2013 was the strongest year in the S&P since 1967. Every major developed market was up strongly so we are up 20%-25% ahead of where we were at the beginning of 2013. Things are getting frothy. You look at all the IPOs that are coming. People are selling holdings because their valuations are good. At the same time, Crimea in the Ukraine has reminded people that political risks are still out there. China’s slowing growth is a major concern and you have seen big slides in the price of commodities like copper and iron ore which are used as collateral by lots of Chinese lenders. Thinks you should be taking some off the table, not necessarily in Canada which was a big laggard last year, but for the ones outside of Canada, whether it is the US, Europe or Japan.

(A Top Pick May 31/13. Up 12.4%.) Last year, gold was down 20% and stocks were down 45%-50%. A big overreaction on the downside. This company is still one of the lower costs, more well managed mines. Good new mines coming on stream in the next several years. Still likes.

Has been a perennial disappointment in the Canadian mutual fund business. Had a decent run through the middle of 2013, but has come off again because it has had some fairly disappointing sales. Emerging-market’s manager and her team left 18 months ago which slowed some outflow. You are now no higher than you were in 2009. Until you actually see a substantial improvement in performance and the stock sees some big inflows…..

Has gone nowhere over the last year because of the rise in interest rates. A specialty brick and beam, former warehouses on the fringes of Montréal and Toronto. One of the biggest Internet hotels in North America with the CBC. Also moving into Calgary, Kitchener and Waterloo. About 90% occupancy so they are well covered. 4.2% yield. A nice play on lower-cost office space, geographical expansion.

This depends on when the C-100 smaller-medium-sized jet actually starts getting sold. It is now thought to be 2015. The plummet in the share price is because it is going to be delayed again and is going to cost another $1 billion on top of the $3.9 billion. 1700 workers have been laid off. In the meantime they keep on winning big rail contracts. He feels the 2 parts should actually be split up between air and rail. Wouldn’t be near this stock for the next 18 months until you see that the C series is actually delivering planes to the airlines.

A specialty the media company, part of the Shaw Empire, and it’s primarily children programming and Oprah. Advertising has not been great, but they bought the other half of Teletoon, 2 specialty French language TV stations and a couple of English language radio stations in Ottawa from Astral, as a condition of Astral being allowed to merge with BCE. Down about 5% over the last year. 4.2% yield. There will be some growth from the efficiencies coming.

2014-03-17 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CPX-T Capital Power

A spin off from Epcor in 2009 and did nothing for the last 4 years because Epcor was selling down its stake, which is now down to under 20%. Raised some money to build a big new power station outside of Calgary along with a bunch of wind farms. Because of this, it hasn’t gone anywhere over the last 4-5 years, but now there is starting to be some movement as the CapX falls off. 5.6% yield. Trading at 15X PE. You have good spread by both our source and geography.

To a certain extent, the rise in the stock is reflecting the enthusiasm for growth stories in technology and obviously Gorilla Glass is one of the better ones. The stock is only where it was 3-4 years ago. It may not be a bad idea to take some profits if you have done well over the last year.

Prefers auto parts companies. The company has done fairly well. The government has got out of it so it is no longer government loaded who sold their holdings at a loss. You don’t have the overhang of the healthcare benefits and pensions. Since it came back to the market, there was a period in 2011-mid-2012 where it wasn’t doing very well because there were concerns about the possibility of a recession in the replacement cycle. Since then there has been a gain in confidence. The company has a very strong position in China and Latin America. However, we are fairly well into that auto cycle. Wouldn’t be a big fan of this.

Wide range of oil field services and has been doing pretty well. This should continue to be a major beneficiary and you are seeing a fair amount of capital expenditure by the majors. Not especially expensive for a stock with as good a pedigree as it has. If you are going to pay high teens for anyone, somebody with the geographical breadth and the range of different services offered that this one has, is probably a better bet than some of the other stuff that is selling in the high teens or mid-$20 in the US market.

Sell and get Whitecap Resources (WCP-T) or Inter Pipeline (IPL-T)? Husky has always been the cheapest integrated major in Canada. Over the last 5 years has been a somewhat better performer. Moving into either of these, they are very different companies. Inter Pipeline is a midstream pipeline operator as opposed to an integrated. Husky has made good progress over the last 5 years and you are getting a good dividend. If we are to see a somewhat higher oil price due to worries about supply from the Mideast or from Russia, Husky might actually make further ground and go on to new highs.

As a midstream pipeline manager, you have a fairly stable flow of revenues. It is really a question of, can they build up the network. Have done exceptionally well over the last 5 years because they have been linking up to some of the new oilfields coming. You are paying a fairly high price, mid-teens price to cash flow but you get a reasonable yield.

One of the major US homebuilders. They have all done extremely well. This had a selloff recently because of the threat of tapering. Cyclical, but a longer-term cycle. With the foul weather out of the way and the bad news from tapering already priced in, there is still a lot of ground to be made up. Cheap financing is still in place. This should be okay until such time as we actually see a rise in interest rates.

The #2 Canadian auto-parts manufacturer. If you own, he would recommend you take half your profits because it is up by 100% since mid-2012. This is a leveraged play on the auto cyclical recovery and has done very well. Very well run and have made lots of accretive acquisitions. Record sales at $3.6 billion and a $2.8 billion order book.
