Market. The market seems to be a little range bound right now, between the 15,000 and 16,000. On the lower end, he would be buying and then trying to accumulate positions that have come down a little. It seems that it will stay there until there is a catalyst to help us push through that. In Canada, maybe it is energy, and tax reform in the US, but doesn’t see those catalysts coming right now. Expects earnings will continue to be good. Waiting for the next driver to really push us. He would suggest having an overweight position in cyclicals, so a little energy, as well as some financials, maybe more so on the US side. Some of the REITs and utilities are still good core holdings, but you probably wouldn’t want to overweight them with rising interest rates on the horizon. The biggest concerns would be geopolitical ones, with the Canadian housing market little further down the line along with the Canadian banks. He is not seeing rising interest rates in Canada for the next 1-1.5 years.

Investing in bank stocks? There are positives to this in that they are very good companies and they don’t get the respect they deserve. His preference would be Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS-T) because of being outside of Canada in South America and Central America. You could also look at an ETF such as BMO Covered Call Canadian Banks (ZWB-T).

Marijuana stocks are tough to get a read on. They’ve all moved in a similar direction. He doesn’t know what the industry is going to look like or what the regulation is going to be like and how everything is going to play out. This is an industry in its infancy, but as a portfolio manager, it is not something he would look at. Once there is some clarification on what future legislation is going to look like, federally and provincially, then it will be a lot easier to determine which stocks are the ones to own.

This is one you could probably get into now. It seems to be in a sideways trading pattern in the last couple of months. Pays a nice dividend. He thinks there are opportunities for them to get some growth. If you are a long-term investor, it is something that you could start accumulating now, and collect the dividend, and probably do well.

He likes this. Pays a really nice dividend yield. There are growth opportunities here. Recently did a purchase in the US and will be getting some synergies from there in future quarters. Their last results were very strong and target prices were starting to get raised. Not cheap, but there is going to be an avenue where you are going to see continued revenue growth, most likely dividend growth. He could see 15%-20% total return.

This basically owns convenience stores and gas stations globally. There are up to around 13,000-14,000 different entities between Canada, the US and Europe. An acquisition oriented company. The stock came down a little in the last quarter, because their earnings were not that solid because of some integration issues with Esso and 2 other brands they bought. He thinks those will go away and they will be back on the path of growth. Dividend yield of 0.6%. (Analysts’ price target is $74.)

Very hard to ascertain what this company actually owns at specific times, so it is hard for analysts to give readings. This is more of a diversified financial, so you are probably not going to see massive growth. They are starting to make their corporate structure a little cleaner, with the splitting off of some of their office properties. (See Top Picks.)

(A Top Pick Oct 26/16. Up 28%.) He could see this at $3-$3.50. Very volatile, so it is more for those with high risk tolerance. Thinks you could make money from current levels on this.

His preferred name in the telecom sector right now. Pays a good dividend. Doesn’t know that you will see huge upside potential on this. If you can get a few percentage on capital growth and the dividends, you are still getting into the high single digits.

2017-04-11 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart BPY.UN-T Brookfield Property Partners

Trading at a substantial discount to NAV. In the properties space, and it is difficult to evaluate all their properties, as values do change. They are getting some better lease rates on some of their properties and disposing of some of their non-core holdings and repositioning those. There is talk of changing to a US REIT which might be positive for them. Dividend yield of 5%, and he could see some growth on this, maybe 10%-12%.

2017-04-11 DON'T BUY Must be logged in to use chart CCO-T Cameco Corporation

Doesn’t know what the catalysts are going to be to move it up, other than it just getting so cheap that it would reach the point of capitulation and so cheap that people would start to buy it. They still have the CRA overhang, which should probably be resolved later this year.

2017-04-11 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CEU-T Canadian Energy Services & Technology

This sells drilling fluids and specialty chemicals. Gets about two thirds of revenue from the US, where they are expanding in the Permian play in Texas. Expects they will continue to ramp up. It has had a good run up over the last year, but is down from its highs of around $8.60 or so. He is expecting tremendous upside. Has a price target of $11. He sees continued growth from this sector in the US, and if we get a rebound in Canada as well, this company will be well positioned. (Analysts’ price target is $9.50.)

A high dividend payer? A name that he might look at. It pays in the 5%-6% range. Sells chemicals to a number of different municipalities and industrial applications. Acquired Canexus last year. They are getting more margin on their product and the dividend is sustainable. He could see this getting up to $21-$22 plus a dividend yield on top of that.

2017-04-11 BUY on WEAKNESS Must be logged in to use chart EIF-T Exchange Income

Shareholders have had really good returns in a short period of time, where there has been substantial growth, so things have to take a little bit of a breather at some point. This is an acquisition oriented company, so they are going to have higher debt levels at certain points. A solid company. Pays a nice solid dividend in the 5%-5.5% area. If you can buy this on a little bit of a dip, there are opportunities here.

This gives you a little bit of a dividend play. With their buyout of Spectra Energy last year. They probably have growth out to the next decade now. One thing you have to be concerned about over the long-term with some of these pipeline companies is the regulatory hurdles and the approval process where they’re probably more of a merger and acquisition play to get their growth. You could probably see another 10% growth.
