Markets. It continues to be the macro picture that drives momentum and sentiment, and it all seems to be stemming from the US Federal Reserve and expectations about when are they going to raise rates. There are a lot of implications for the US$ versus the rest of the basket. We have seen huge moves at the end of last year, and then year to date a reversal of a lot of that. Because the dollar is tied to commodities, there have been big runs in a lot of the commodity names. A very different picture year-to-date in the Canadian market than anywhere else globally. Whenever she gets macro noise that is taking the markets around, she tries to look for where opportunities are. The biggest thing is, will interest rates remain low enough for valuations to continue to make sense. She thinks they will. Doesn’t expect anybody will be in a rush to raise rates. Beyond that, what really drives things, is individual securities. Valuations are at bit higher than normal because of the low rate environment. The 2nd piece is earnings, and when she looks at this we are no longer in structural, so 1 is the aging population and 2 is the debt, and we are no longer in a situation where the entire economy is growing. She has been advocating that it is going to be really difficult to do well in the market going forward with a passive approach, because the 2 things you need to do well is 1) valuations coming off lows or 2) broad-based economic growth. It is going to be more and more important in the high valuation/low growth world to really pick your spots with a portfolio that is more focused than broad market based.

2016-05-24 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BAC-N Bank of America

Banks are spread earners, so the more that interest rates move up, the more of a spread they can get and there is less pressure on the business. Changing expectations took a bit of life out of all the banks. She prefers Citibank (C-N) which is trading at a bigger discount to BV. However, the big picture drivers are all the same.

This helps financial institutions. When they do investor communications, such as proxy voting or management change, unit voters have to vote, and this company facilitates 90%+ of the proxy voting. There is so much pressure on financial institutions with new regulations coming up. Dividend yield of 1.84%.

Their segments include mining, energy exposure and construction around energy. If you look at all their segments, there is just no good part of the business that is working right now. Have done a fantastic job of managing costs, but it is a very tough environment. The big question is, where are we in the cycle and are we close to a bottom. Expectations are still being reset lower with some caution on the stock. Reported in April and earnings came in slightly below. Revenue was better, but they did cut their profit outlook.

2016-05-24 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart COST-Q Costco Wholesale

A great business, but she is more neutral on the name. As much as it is a good business, it is suffering from a bit of the same dynamic as retail sales across the US. Not sure where the incremental growth is going to come from. She would be looking for something with a more favourable risk/reward dynamic.

(A Top Pick Aug 13/15. Up 1.73%.) Old school technology that people think is going to get slaughtered by newer technologies. The company has shown a very good ability to redefine how it operates and bring product to market. Have been able to grow revenue and hang onto margins, when the expectation was that it wouldn’t. They’ve seen success in getting more recurring revenue through more services and software in their product mix, which they are now going to use more in the rest of their product line.

With this one, you have the valuation on your side. You have had the threat that it should be showing up in the results, but it is not. Have done a very good job of transitioning. They have a fantastic client base and they are asking them what they need to do. There is still a lot of upside based on the valuation. Dividend yield of 3.65%.

2016-05-24 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CVX-N Chevron Texaco

Oil prices in the US kind of move opposite to the US$, giving you a kind of offset. Oil exposure in Canada moves truer to what oil prices actually are doing. This gives US companies less volatility. The dividend is this company’s #1 priority. They are looking more at divesting assets as opposed to buying opportunities, and are more focused on short cycle projects.

The economy has just gone through a commodity -type cycle. The question is, when is the cycle going to bottom out. Because we have had such a long commodity cycle, it is a really tough question to answer. Prefers taking other types of cyclical risks.

This company does the back end for a lot of the telco companies and the cable companies. When you had your 1st cell phone, you had minutes, but now you can bundle with half your office plus your grandmother, etc. It is so complicated trying to figure out how much data you are using and what you are getting billed for, and this company puts all that together. AT&T is their big customer. Dividend yield of 1.36%.

Another example where we haven’t seen that big of a fall off in terms of operating metrics or auto sales in the US or globally. However, at the same time there is a fear that something bad is going to happen. A lot of these have been under pressure because people are feeling we are at the end of the cycle. There is a lot of volatility in these types of names, and there could be a better entry point.

A lot of consumer spending is on the home. A lot of good stuff is happening in this company. They are executing very well. Growth has been great. The valuation is what is keeping her on the sidelines.
