Market. This has been a funny market this whole year. In the Canadian market, there has been so much of the golds and energy moving. We have also had BREXIT, which was a full macro sort of scene. Then you have the Fed which has been driving a lot of expectations. She thinks Fed expectations are going to be a big mover. There were huge rallies in yields early in the year, but the Fed backpedaled from their story of raising rates. With fear levels up, it is amazing that we are hitting new highs. Her preference is to own stories where there is a little bit of yield generation at the company level, and from that standpoint, she thinks cyclicals are a better place to be.

2016-08-10 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BAC-N Bank of America

With US banks, it is really a call on interest rates. Coming into the year they had some strength with expectations for interest rates going up, but that got completely deflated resulting in some pressure. They are under such attack from multiple levels, such as rates and regulations. There is also the fintech angle. However, valuations are well below BV. Thinks the group will be lumpy, but years out she expects they will be higher.

She likes their private equity space. They have a number of arms of infrastructure. She has a number of companies that do similar things, which give the same kind of dynamics. Prefers a Tricon (TCN-T) or a KKR (KKR-N) instead. (See Top Picks.)

2016-08-10 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BBBY-Q Bed Bath & Beyond

Retail overall has been really, really tough. It has been very segmented into winners and losers. The tough part for this company is what a lot of the more traditional department store types are seeing. They are not getting the differentiation and are having issues with traffic. Stuff they are working on hasn’t really panned out a lot.

Any time a company is faced with such a tough environment, they always look at costs. Feels that with the rotation from mining into infrastructure, a lot of stocks have really done well. However, we still haven’t seen the bottom of the downturn.

2016-08-10 SPECULATIVE BUY Must be logged in to use chart CBI-N Chicago Bridge & Iron Co.

Not for the faint of heart. They are in construction and she has been seeing some good activity in that space. This one hasn’t participated as much because of the parts of the market they are in. They do petrochemicals as well as LNGs, and a lot of projects are being delayed. Estimates are coming down and guidance is coming down. They’ve had execution issues. Also, there is a $2 billion+ lawsuit they are getting accused of. If you can stomach the volatility, this looks like a good entry point.

2016-08-10 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CSCO-Q Cisco

(A Top Pick Aug 13/15. Up 11.25%.) They have shown that they have been able to be relevant with the software defined network coming out, as well as maintaining margins. They’ve taken costs out of the areas that are slowing, and put them into new growth areas. Valuations are still very attractive, and there is still room to run.

2016-08-10 BUY Must be logged in to use chart CTSH-Q Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp.

A fantastic company, and you should add to your holdings. Technology is coming into pretty much every industry across the globe, and this company comes in to make a company lean. They do retooling of how a company does business. A very powerful, long term secular trend. (See Top Picks.)

2016-08-10 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart EMN-N Eastman Chemical

A really volatile name in some ways. Compared to other chemical companies, they have been pushing really hard to get into more of the specialized product to get a higher margin and more diversification, but are still exposed to more of the commodity type parts of the market. A lot of the sales are going into Asia, which is where you are seeing some weakness. There is a lot of leverage in the model, where there is not a lot of control. She is on the sidelines for this.

2016-08-10 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart FB-Q Facebook

This has been a dominant player. What she is seeing in so many different spaces, is just how quickly industries are being disrupted, in how things are being done. This company is benefiting and they dominate mobile ads. Had good revenue performance in the last quarter. Has always been on the sidelines because of valuation.

2016-08-10 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart GIB.A-T CGI Group (A)

They are on the consulting side in how to make businesses better, and are able to do that all throughout the execution. A great play for the underlying trends of technology implementation.

2016-08-10 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart KKR-N KKR & Co. LP

Likes what management did in their last quarter call. They listed the pushbacks and addressed every one of them. She looks at this from a longer-term perspective, which is exactly when they are creating value. There is still a lot of demand for private equity, so they are seeing tremendous fund flows. They have a steady stream of earnings from management fees. Thinks there is quite a bit of upside to this. Dividend yield of 4.3%. (See Top Picks.)

2016-08-10 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart NKE-N Nike Inc

The industry has just had a huge amount of growth. They have some pressure from Adidas, which is really coming out with new lines. You have Under Armour (UA-N) on the other side. When you put it all together, this has been one of the few bright spots in retail. The 3 of these trade at multiples well beyond what others are trading at. She would be a little cautious.

2016-08-10 BUY Must be logged in to use chart PKI-T Parkland Fuel Corp

Think of this company as the middleman for fuel. They buy fuel from the refineries, and then sell it to end consumers, plus they have a bit of a wholesale division as well. They own a lot of gas stations, and do a lot of commercial type stuff like propane to housing. As they get bigger, they get better at negotiating power with the people they are buying fuel from. A very good company. A good entry point. 4.6% dividend yield.

2016-08-10 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart RHI-N Robert Half International

(A Top Pick Aug 13/15. Down 33.39%.) This does recruiting, and is really focused on the smaller side of professional services. She really likes the story, because a lot of the thematic plays in a portfolio, is that of specialization, allowing companies to focus on things that they are good at. They’ve had very good growth rates, but the market to some degree is already pricing in a downturn and recession.
