Is there any arbitrage advantage in holding Canadian stocks out of the US exchanges because of the currency valuations? He would feel that any advantage would be arbitraged away by sophisticated traders who buy the currency, etc. Brokerages charge you a lot of money for foreign exchange so make sure you are not getting ripped off.

US economy is slowly picking up. The housing sector is coming back. There is a rumour that they've found a reservoir of oil, containing 50 billion barrels which will make the US energy independent. This is great news for the government and for consumers as it will lower gas prices.  The US dollar will be gaining against the Canadian dollar so it's best to invest in the States so you get the gain from the investment as well as the gain from the US dollar rising against the Canadian dollar.

Recently, US REITs such as Annaly (NLY-N) and American Capital Agency (AGNC-Q) have dropped like a stone. Why? Investors are panicking because of rising rates. Worried that the bond market is going to come back and make REITs less attractive because REITs would have to pay a higher dividend. He has a hard time thinking that REITs are going to rise a lot. He would buy these and hold them for the dividends especially because of the Cdn$ versus the US$.

Assemble modular’s for cars, basically Ford’s, and they lost their contract. However, they have about another 1-1.5 years to go so they are going to generate a lot of cash. Have about $27 million in cash on their balance sheet. Adding up what you think they are going to make and what they have in the bank, stock is probably trading for less than that sum of cash. Possible cut in the dividend, which the board will decide on, on a quarter to quarter basis. Be careful on this one.

Have 3 divisions such as pipeline laying, underground cables, etc. Just acquired a company that has a propriety Tory technology of heating steel pipe before it is put in the ground, which prevents buckling in the cold weather. This company is in the process of raising money to expand this new area.

Wouldn’t recommend buying any gold producing company. They never make money. There is hardly ever any inside ownership on a gold company. They are constantly issuing paper. You can make money trading the paper if you get in and out quickly but over the long-term, you don’t make money on gold stocks.

This is kind of a play on the US recovery. Sell buses to transit commissions, which are ultimately funded by the taxpayers. Had a very rough go of it over the last 5 years but things are getting better. Pays a nice 5.7% dividend which he thinks will go up over the next few years. Competition is disappearing. Brazilian bus-maker, Marco Polo, bought a 20% stake in this company at $10.50 a share.
