Markets. We have had 2 rate cuts in Canada this year. We have had anaemic growth and there has been a lot of challenges with the Cdn$ and commodities. REITs are a pretty simple business and should have done a lot better. A nice hunting ground for income investors. You probably want to stay away from the retail side, but industrial looks pretty good. Also, apartments, multi-residential REITs, look pretty good as well.

Oil. In the short term, the price of oil is scaring a lot of people away. One needs to question if you need to own oil at all. Start thinking 6 or 12 months out. His feeling is that oil is going to be higher in 12 months than it is today. In that case, you want to own some of the large cap, high quality, dividend names. There will be a number of bankruptcies, so be very careful and pay attention to the balance sheets.

Banks for RRSPs? Banks are very good long-term holds for investors. We might be entering a period of slow earnings growth for Canadian banks, but for income investors nothing is more sacrosanct than the dividends, and Bank dividends are very strong.

(A Top Pick Nov 18/14. Down 16.91%.) A very good company and it is in the right space. Industrials performed horribly in 2015.

2015-12-11 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BAC-N Bank of America

Royal Bank (RY-T) or Bank of America (BAC-N)? Look at the economies of both countries and the balance sheets of both stocks. This one has a lot of good things going forward, specifically if you think rates are going to rise in the US. That will have a tremendous leverage to the uptick in rates.

A good, long term hold for an income investor that is also looking for growth. This company is looking to buy long life assets with a very long time horizon.

2015-12-11 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart C-N CitiGroup

On banks that will do well even if rates don’t rise, this one really fits the bill. Doing a great job of turning around the assets. They are trying to accrete more value to tangible Book Value, and that will really re-rate the multiple. Dividend yield of 0.39%.

2015-12-11 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CGX-T Cineplex Inc

A simple business for investors to understand. All of it is setting up really nicely for 2016. Doesn’t see why this would not be a good investment for an RRSP investment.

A good, long term play. They have one of the largest public portfolios in Canada. A very attractive asset for perhaps a US company that is looking to expand, or perhaps a Canadian pension fund. If nothing happens, you collect a very good dividend. This is slow, steady growth, and should do quite well in this low interest rate environment.

It is hard to believe that shareholders won’t agree to the takeover by Superior Plus (SPB-T). This is clearly a broken company, but with very good assets.

(A Top Pick Nov 18/14. Down 16.94%.) This is a theme that should have worked, but didn’t. They spent a lot trying to grow their loan book, and the challenge is that earnings growth is going to be a little muted.

2015-12-11 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart DIS-N Walt Disney

A high-quality, large cap, media player that is growing its dividend 20%-25% annually. Don’t underestimate their ability to generate high-quality product. There have been some issues about ESPN not hitting their subscriber growth, but don’t underestimate the thirst or appetite for real-time sports and the premium advertising that is going to be associated with that.

2015-12-11 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart ENB-T Enbridge

Decline in share price picked up speed after Kinder Morgan (KMI-N) cut their dividend. A lot of institutional money managers are starting to question if Enbridge will be cutting their dividend. He likes this company and continues to hold it. Thinks the dividend is safe.

2015-12-11 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart FDX-N FedEx

FedEx (FDX-N) or UPS (UPS-N)? Both very good companies. Everybody is now buying online, and both companies are bulking up for the peak season. They have both equally increased prices. As an income investor, he has always preferred UPS. Feels it is a better run business with higher margins. Dividend yield of less than 1%.

2015-12-11 BUY Must be logged in to use chart LNR-T Linamar Corp

Linamar (LNR-T) or Magna (MG-T)? 2 high quality auto parts companies. When you think about auto parts, it is really content per vehicle, and you have to assume that that is going to increase. Both companies are doing very well and have a lot of new program wins over the next couple of years, so he thinks we are going to see good content growth going forward. Magna seems to have taken a hit here, and a big chunk of that might be because of its euro exposure, but don’t forget its balance sheet is very strong. On a relative value only, he would pick Magna, but they are both very high quality companies. You could hold both.
