Markets. He didn’t have a lot of energy companies this year, which he was glad of. Was more positioned in growth stocks than in financial services. Right now he is up 21%, while the market is up 5%-6%, so he has done well. Thinks 2015 is going to be another good year for knowledge based industries such as pharmaceuticals, software, etc. For this sector, he looks strictly at Canada. The resource sector has already been sold off, so he doesn’t think it gets any worse. Next year could be a very good year for the TSX because the non-resource sector will continue to perform well, and the resource sector has been oversold. This makes it a buying opportunity. Although he is looking at energy stocks, he hasn’t bought. The single most important thing is for the commodity to steady up. He has a different way of looking at growth. Looks at it from a ROE point of view, i.e., the growth and net worth of a business. A similar methodology that Warren Buffett uses. Because he applies this methodology in Canada, which is not as efficient as the US, he seems to get a huge amount of bang for the buck. The single most important thing that is tied up in ROE, are firms that have a competitive advantage, or big moats built around them. He wants businesses that are growing at 20% a year, but are protected in some way so they can grow 20% year after year after year. Started his fund 7 years ago and has averaged 28% per year in returns. His target is a minimum return of 20% a year.

2014-12-24 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ACQ-T AutoCanada Inc.

Had a huge run up to over $90 and corrected back to $41.85. In western based automotive businesses, people are worried about what that does for the future and they need to see where oil/gas is going to steady up at. This is a company that he is now planning visits with in order to meet management. He could very well become a buyer of this in a few months time.

Fantastic company. A little bit on the expensive side. He used to own this. They have a couple of acquisitions that they just announced last week that look fantastic. Great management team. Trading at 23X Forward Earnings, while most companies he owns are trading at 15X Forward PE or lower.

2014-12-24 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart AVO-T Avigilon Corp

This is a tough one as it has a lot of stuff going on in the background. They are doing an acquisition. The question is whether you Buy more or just Hold. He hasn’t had a discussion with management yet, and that is where he needs to go. There was turmoil in the executive suite in the last little while. Thinks they just announced an acquisition this last week or so. There is a lot of stuff to re-evaluate.

2014-12-24 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart BNS-T Bank of Nova Scotia

Sell Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS-T) and buy a different Canadian bank or Canadian General Investments (CGI-T)? For long-term investors, Canadian banks are a good deal. They don’t have the growth rate that he is looking for, but when you take it on a combined capital gains and dividend basis, you are getting a 12%-13% growth rate over time. A 3rd of it is in the form of a good healthy dividend and the rest is in capital gains. He would be reluctant to sell one bank to get another. You are not that much further ahead.

Probably one of the best managed of the services companies. Tends to be one of the higher ROE companies. He doesn’t own a lot of oil/gas today, but he would guess that by June/15, he will. This would be one of those names that he would be taking a hard look at.

2014-12-24 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CGI-T Canadian General Investments

An outstanding story. Their ROE has not fallen below 20% in the last 5-6 years. Trades on a forward multiple of about 9 or 10 times earnings. For an investor with large-cap, liquid, blue chip stocks, he doesn’t know if he could think of a better name that has both growth characteristics and valuation.

He would recommend the 3 Top Picks for this show over this stock, because they are just getting going. All 3 of them are related to the Bio/medical/Pharma world.

2014-12-24 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CRH-T CRH Medical Corp.

A little company based in Vancouver that just had a transformational US acquisition. They are in the hemorrhoid business with clinics where people go in for procedures. This is one of those companies that is off the radar screen. His sense is that this is a $2.50 stock in a year’s time.

(A Top Pick Dec 24/13. Up 56.36%.) There has been no technical analyst that has pounded the table on this over the last 5 years, and yet it keeps going up and up and up.

This has absolutely gotten hammered. In some of these juniors, the tax loss selling has ended now. In the month of January alone, this thing could bounce back to $2 really quickly.

2014-12-24 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart EFN-T Element Financial

They do a lot of leasing and consumer lending. Have done a lot of acquisitions lately. Not a bad company. The CEO is a very interesting and entrepreneurial person. Stock has gone sideways for quite some time now, as the market tries to figure out what they own and what the earnings look like. He wouldn’t be pounding the table on this right now. A Weak Hold.

2014-12-24 BUY Must be logged in to use chart HCG-T Home Capital Group

A blue chip company. ROE has not gone below 20% since 1993, which is due to Down cycles. Doesn’t expect this to change. Every once in a while, the stock goes up really, really fast and then it corrects, so there is a bit of volatility. The correction that happened in December hit a lot of stocks. Financial services stocks are sometimes perceived to be risky. In this case this is a mortgage lender in Western Canada. Because of the drop in oil, the concern is whether people can pay their mortgages in Alberta or Saskatchewan. He thinks this is going to be fine. This is a good time to get in. A 12 month target price of $58 is very reasonable.

Doesn’t own this any more. A great company. All of a sudden it has started to move back up on his screens and he may start to invest in it again. Would rate this as a Buy, and his sense is that the stock is due for a bit of a break out. It is starting to look cheap in relation to its peer group. He can see it moving up to the $105 level over the next 3-6 months.
