Markets.  He had anticipated the current market and is now about 20% in cash, which is pretty high for him. Also, has portfolio protection for another 30% of his portfolio, which only kicks in if there is a really big correction. He will use his pile of cash over the next 3-4 months to buy or add to the companies that he likes. He buys Put options on the market as insurance. He buys them 7%-8% out of the money so it doesn’t cost very much, but as a consequence they don’t kick in if the market goes down only 3%, but do kick in if the market goes down more than 8%. There is some time value as well. They are there to protect him from tail risks. He also Shorts stocks, which have done quite well, but he doesn’t have many right now. Usually if the market is going to come off quite strongly, 1 of 2 things is going to happen. Either interest rates are going to go up which creates a reaction; or earnings are coming in lower than expected which gives a valuation correction. Hasn’t seen Canadian data yet, but in the US earnings are coming in at about 6% above expectation. A very, very significant beat at this point. He knows earnings growth is strong and doesn’t see inflation on the horizon, which are the 2 big things you watch, for a more severe correction.

Canadian banks. All of the banks have had a pretty big correction here. Banks are really good investments for Canadians on risk/reward. In the meantime, you keep getting a nice dividend. The businesses themselves are growing, so every year they raise the dividend. If you think the US is going to be really strong, you go with Toronto Dominion (TD-T) and if you are thinking of a great domestic franchise, he would go with Royal Bank (RY-T).

Has a really small position in this. With all the stuff that is coming out with the different acquisitions, some of the issues on investigations that have been in the press which may or may not affect the company, he is not comfortable recommending the stock. He needs to see a lot of the stuff get cleaned up.

Good company. They have good management and it is a good business. It is at a fair price right now. Good yield of 6.6%.

Had a big acquisition and we have now seen a quarter, which only represents 20% of their year. The quarter was clean. Good management team. Valuation is still reasonable. In a years time this can be a $5 or better stock.

When he originally recommended this, it was on 7 or 8 times earnings, but is now on about 28 times earnings. Considers this management to be the best capital allocators in Canada. They are raising debt right now, and why would they be doing this if they were not going to be doing big acquisitions. You won’t know about these until the morning the press release comes out, and the stock will pop.

Still thinks this is undervalued and has recently been buying at around $17. Got hammered a couple years ago. Earnings were actually fine, but there was a report that implied there was some accounting issues. Really attractive yield of 8%.

Everything looks great. ROE is at 17%, a little bit lower than what he wants, but other than that this looks like a Buy. The outlook for the next year or 2 is going to be quite good.

Very good management team. They kind of went quiet in the 2003-2008 era and then started acquiring more software companies. However, valuations are getting up there.

This is safe and boring. A steady Eddie that tends to grow year-over-year at a single digit. It just doesn’t have enough to get him excited. ROE on an average year is typically single digit, which is not enough growth for him.

2015-05-06 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart GIB.A-T CGI Group (A)

CGI Group (GIB.A-T) or Open Text(OTC-T)? Although he owns both, there is no question that he would choose this one. Open Text trades at around 12X 2015 earnings. For a quality growth company, he really feels that valuation is tough to beat. Also, this has been paying down its debt quite readily, so they are primed for an acquisition. If you are looking for a game changing acquisition, it is more likely to come with this company. It is cheaper and has a very nice ROE profile.

There is a lot of discussion about the airlines where they are making more money from selling you an upgraded seat, put in your baggage on, etc. This company’s business is to do the fulfilment on a plane. Once the airlines figure out there is money to be made here, the question is whether they will share this with anybody else. He doesn’t know where the profitability will come from and he thinks it is going to be a tough business.
