Markets. Thinks the “Sell in May and go away” is not that far away. We have been in this bull market for quite a few years. Now is a good time to actually be doing a little bit of a portfolio cleanup. Over the next 4-6 weeks, if you have a $100,000 portfolio, look to take $10,000-$15,000 off the table and build a bit of cash. Thinks there will be opportunities to Buy bargains later on in the year. Look at your portfolio for your most economically sensitive or cyclical stocks and maybe lighten up a little bit there. Or look for your most expensive stocks in terms of valuations. Reduce your exposure and use seasonal strength of the market now, because once we get into it April-May, it will be too late to sell.

Energy. He doesn’t feel that oil will go below $45-$50. Feels the next move in oil is back to $60, $65 or $70.

US economy. The US$ has gone up about 25% to the average global currency, which is going to have a huge negative impact at some point on US growth. All US companies that export are going to be struggling to keep that growth going. Thinks there will be a big slowdown in the US economy in the 2nd half of the year. The 2nd issue is the Cdn$ versus the US$. His experience is that the Cdn$ tracks oil more than any other commodity. At $45-$50 oil does not go lower, so at $.80 to the US $1, we are close to a bottom. Feels the next move in the Cdn$ is from $.80 to $.90. For people that are hedging, because it is going to go to $.60, he thinks you are wasting your money.

This looks good, and is one of the companies that’s on his lists of a company to see. He is hoping to meet with management in the next few weeks. There was a lot of turmoil about 6-9 months ago in the management suite, but they have kind of settled down. Valuation looks right and will probably be a Buy subject to him meeting with management and asking a few key questions.

A great company and got knocked down with all the oil/gas service companies. You have to realize that half of what they do is oil/gas, but half is urban infrastructure. They can shift from one to another. He was a bull on this 3-4 years ago and then Sold. It has now had a big correction, and he is easing back into it now. Although he thinks earnings will be flattish this year, he thinks ROE will be about 25% and this is a good time to get back in.

Had a Short on this and just covered it in the last couple of days. His issue is that the ROE is really, really modest. They have a capital base of about $1.1 billion of equity and are on target to make $35 million. That is a 3.5% return. When you are doing this kind of return on that kind of capital, you won’t trade at BV. The rough rule of thumb in Canada is that if you have an 8% ROE, you will trade at Book, 16% ROE you will trade at 2X Book, etc. This company’s average is around 4%, so that should trade at around .5X Book, and their average is about .6X Book right now. They have to become much more capital efficient. If there is a little bit of a rally in this company and if you own, he would recommend that you Sell.

This is an example of one that he would lighten up on. A very good company and very well-managed, but their US businesses are centred in Denver, which has been a beneficiary of a lot of the oil/gas activity. He thinks there is vulnerability for a slowdown. Also, their Denver leasing company is also involved tangentially in construction, housing, etc. and he expects there will be a slow down there.

He likes this and has a fairly large position, but his average cost is $7. The challenge going forward as it goes higher, is that they have a very high dependence on a single product. The challenge over time is to get diversification into their portfolio. He thinks this can definitely go higher, but some of the smaller names such as Nobilis (NHC-T), Patient Home Monitoring (PHM-X) and CRH Medical (CRH-T) would be better. If you had $3000, you could spread it over these 3 as there is still a lot of growth, but he wouldn’t have exposure to one individual name.

This is getting ahead of itself. Likes the company and thinks the management team is great, but he needs to see more details before he could add more capital. He knows there are more acquisitions coming in after that, but put the current one to bed. If you are going to grow through acquisitions you have to show that you can acquire intelligently and integrate the acquisitions. Considers this as a “strong hold”.

(A Top Pick March 18/14. Up 44.13%.) Still buying today. The risk is that at some point the growth slows down, but in this case, it won’t be like a hay stack where it rolls over, but will just slow down because they got to a certain size. Did a bond issue last fall indicating they could be making an acquisition. They are brilliant capital allocators.

This is a great bank, but has taken more of a hit than the other banks. Because they know they are in the middle of oil and gas country, they avoid direct lending to oil/gas companies and keep it quite low. Nonetheless, they are tangentially affected. This bank is off, but not often enough to give really excited about it. Their earnings will be fine, but he doesn’t think the stock will go anywhere significant for the next little while.

(A Top Pick March 18/14. Down 50.74%.) This was just a bad call. He thought natural gas would be going higher. Thinks the bottom is in on oil/gas and he has actually been adding in the last little while.

Loves their product. Looking underneath the hood at the cash flows and profitability, and he doesn’t see them. A lot of analysts who value this company, do it on a non-gap earnings basis, and they add back a whole bunch of costs that he views as costs, but they view as amortizations. He just doesn’t see the profitability.

In the consumer finance, so when the economy gets weak, a lot of fears and worries come out, and this company is vulnerable. At this stage, when we are 5-6 years into a bull market, this is not the time to have a lot of financials in your portfolio. If this is a 5%-10% weighting in your portfolio, you can stay with it because it is a good name. However, if you have a lot of financial services, you might want to think about lightening up a little.

A very good software company. Hasn’t been adding to his holdings because the valuation is pretty much a premium brand. Pretty much trading on a low 20s PE, and raises one of the challenges for people investing in this market. A lot of the good stuff, like this, is quite expensive.
