Markets. Markets are going through a consolidation phase. We had a pretty strong year last year, certainly in the US and certainly in the high beta names. We are seeing that going through a little bit of indigestion. Canada is doing quite well, but is mostly based on energy and, at one point, a bit of a gold move. There will be a lot of consolidation, but what makes him a little bit more comfortable is the PMI indices globally. Above 50 means the economy is expanding. The numbers including Europe, and to some extent, China, are positive. There are a lot of studies that say bull markets only end on a recession. The problem he has with this is, what if we sink into a recession. Doesn’t think this has been priced into this market as effectively as people think. His strategy is to hang onto the good quality names, dabble a little in the high beta, but at any time, he is going to use his Stop/Losses to get out of things when they start to get a little worse than they are.

Off about 20% this year. Reported in Europe early this morning. Earnings were a little disappointing, but the stock actually did well in the market today. Too many people have been citing World Cup as a reason to own, but company feels this will hit up in the 2nd quarter in earnings. They only have 5%-6% of the running shoe market in the US where Nike has a stranglehold. Need to tackle that and will probably have success. If they don’t start to do better, there are some activist investors in Europe that will start to make some noise.

(A Top Pick May 1/13. Up 16.75%.) It reached his target, but the other issue he was having was its huge exposure to Japan. Sold his holdings. Still an attractive name.

(A Top Pick May 1/13. Up 28.06%.) Raised their dividend and 4.4 billion common shares are going to be bought back in the next 12 months. Still a core holding. This correction is a great buying opportunity.

Continues to surprise him. Has a 150% payout ratio, but no one expects a dividend cut in the near-term. They take care of a lot of the remote regional parts of delivering the Bell (BC-T) platform and have about a 25% penetration rate all the way from Atlantic Canada to South-western Ontario. Doesn’t see any reason why the dividend should be cut. He would rather just move into the parent company which will give you a better growth profile.

2014-05-06 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BAC-N Bank of America

This is a bank that disappointed investors. They were going to increase their dividends and buybacks, but had to cancel because, apparently, they have been doing the math wrong for 5 years. If you own a significant amount of this, that is probably a mistake. He would move your money back to 2 great companies like the Royal Bank (RY-T) and Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS-T).

With what is going on in the last couple of months in technology and a lot of the moving parts in respect to the new love in Apple (AAPL-Q), Google (GOOG-Q) and even Amazon (AMZN-Q), probably some of its patents get bought. Doesn’t fit his criteria.

Pharmacy benefits manager. He likes to adhere to a stop-loss program, but there was nothing in the numbers or any research that could explain the big downdraft the stock was having other than the environment with healthcare, Obama care, etc. Greater earnings report last week. Thinks they still have good numbers ahead of it.

Having a great year. He owns Suncor (SU-T). Oil is probably right where it should be right now. Might be a little elevated with what is going on in Russia, but he doesn’t expect oil to go a lot higher.

2014-05-06 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart FB-Q Facebook

Mobile is where everything is going. 50% of this company’s revenue is from mobile. Had $2.5 billion in revenue. The interesting thing about this is that management is actually showing some pretty good credibility in their core operations. The problem he is going to have with this is that the space is falling out of favour and it will be a bit of an upward climb. Be very careful. Will probably take a peek at this one over the summer months.

Owns the banks, insurance companies and some of the asset managers. Also, owns ETFs. Nothing wrong with owning this. The rising interest rate environment generally is good for the financial sector. 6.62% dividend.

Still executing very strongly in all areas. They spent $3.2 billion on net and have a lot of robotic companies. They are weighing in on a lot of the core key businesses. On this pullback alone, he would get the GOOGL-Q shares.
