Markets. There is no secret that the global market is pretty much stretched. On a market cap weight it is about 18X, which is towards the high end. Bears will tell you that is of great concern, but there are pockets of value.  Within these large markets, like the S&P500 or Canada, there is incredible value. It is just whether you want to go down into some of those value names or whether you want to stick with what is working. Has been stopped out of a few names and hasn’t replaced them with a very good candidate yet. He puts investors into 3 categories. 1.) Those that have missed this rally, who have said they are not putting up with this again. They have stayed in cash because valuations are so high, so what is it going to take to get them back in. 2.) Those who didn’t do well in 2008, but have recovered, but haven’t changed the way they approach managing their money. If another 2008 comes along, he fears they will make another mistake. (Didn’t give #3.) He uses stop losses, which seems to work just fine.

Energy. He is not a fan of the energy patch, more because of its cyclical nature. It is fantastic to see some recovery, and very refreshing for a lot of Canadian investors. You have to remember that a lot of the valuation of these energy companies is based on $65-$70 oil, if not even higher. This rally is obviously welcome, but he is not sure it is as sustainable as some investors might think.

How do you apply your stop losses when the stock is moving up? He doesn’t enter Stops into his trading system. Uses an old-fashioned spreadsheet, linked in dynamically to his data feed. Has his spreadsheet showing red, yellow and green. Yellow he doesn’t mind, but red he does not like. It starts to tell him when things are weakening. He follows it up with a ratcheted level. His warnings are fairly simple and he is not looking at technicals at the 1st stage. 5% off of its high gives it a yellow, 10% gives it a red and then he watches it from there. He doesn’t usually let things get much further than a -10 or a -12. Is the name falling 10% (Eg.), but is the entire sector down 10%? That gives him a bit more comfort to sit tight on it. If it goes down 11%-12%, then he starts looking at the 50-200 day and does another whole sweep of his fundamental research reports, and then makes a decision. When you have a sector doing well, and for whatever reason your name in that sector is not doing well, you have to get out of the name and move on.

2015-04-15 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart AMZN-Q Amazon.com

Wal-Mart (WMT-N) or Amazon.com (AMZN-Q)? 900 PE ratio. The reason this one has a sky high PE is because they don’t have any earnings at the moment. Of the 2, this would be his preference. This is one of his favourite names. One of the best moves he has ever done is moving away from old retail to new retail. Visionary management.

2015-04-15 STRONG BUY Must be logged in to use chart BABA-N Alibaba Group Holding

The IPO hit $120 at one point. He would definitely be looking at buying this name right now. It is in a perfect position. A big competitor to some of the big names in the US. One of the names he has enjoyed with some good success, is the PowerShares Golden Dragon China ETF (PGJ-N). He doesn’t see this stock in that, but it would certainly fit in nicely.

2015-04-15 BUY Must be logged in to use chart BCE-T BCE Inc.

This is a very competitive space in Canada. Although there is price deflation occurring in this space we are spending more, which is a great combination for this company. What is surprising to him is how good their product really is. They are really doing well on their wire line growth. Great dividend yield.

2015-04-15 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BMO-T Bank of Montreal

Hasn’t owned this for a very long time. Has never had a really good feel for this over the years. It had very high expenses which has hurt its margins over the years, more so than any of the other Canadian banks. It tends to lag. His preference is Toronto Dominion (TD-T), Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS-T) and Royal Bank (RY-T).

This is an example of a name that he had owned, where he had got stopped out. He loved the name, so got right back into it. It had quite a rebound and he ended up taking his money off the table. If you own, he would recommend that you stick with it.

2015-04-15 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CCT-T Catamaran Corp

United Health has made an offer for the stock. He waited a few weeks to see if another offer would come through. What bothered him about the deal is that this would be dead money until the deal closed. To have a name sitting there going sideways for the next 5-6 months would not have been very beneficial to the performance in his portfolio. United Health is a phenomenal company, and you couldn’t have asked for a better name to be taking this over. There might be something to look for, in how they treat it from a tax perspective. There is always some risk of an antitrust situation or some other regulatory situation. He doesn’t think the deal will fall apart.

2015-04-15 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CMG-N Chipotle Mexican Grill

An opportunity to pick up a pretty good name that has done a sideways move for some time. Millennials (generation Y) are taking to the name. The company is able to price what they want because consumers believe they are getting good value for their money and the quality is very high. Store count is around 1600 in the US, which he thinks is a very low concentration, considering what they have ahead of them. This doesn’t even consider what they are doing internationally.

2015-04-15 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart DEF-N Guggenheim Defensive Equity ETF

Growth expense ratio on this is 66 or 74 basis points. That is a little high. It has a nice name. Defensive equity is a very alluring. It will probably do you no harm, but he would recommend you look at some of the Vanguards where they have incredible low expense ratios. You are going to find a lot of the defensive names falling into the low volume names category as well.

2015-04-15 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart JPM-N JP Morgan Chase & Co

Valuation is only 10X forward PE. Earnings showed pretty good and rather robust trading in capital markets activity. If interest rates start going up, this would be a bit of a tailwind for them. Buybacks were authorized to go even higher. Dividend yield of 2.49%.

2015-04-15 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart POT-T Potash Corp of Saskatchewan

This falls into the category of a very highly cyclical dependent on what is happening globally. For a long, long term, it is an important part of agriculture in our economy. He is not interested in this right now.

2015-04-15 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart QCOM-Q Qualcomm

(A Top Pick March 31/14. Down 11% to 3%.) He got stopped out of this. At the time there was a lot of issue with the Chinese, patent rules, etc. The opportunity seems to be turning around right now.

2015-04-15 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart SPLK-Q Splunk Inc

(A Top Pick March 31/14. Down 11.25%.) He bought this as it was coming off a 35% correction at around $65 and he immediately got stopped out. Still a big name in big data analytics. A great story that will do well.
