Markets.  The Fed gave the market exactly what it wanted.  The market did not do much and then took a dive.  Interest rate hikes are still on the table, as early as March.  You have to manage your portfolio according to the guidelines that you have set up with respect to asset allocation, for example.  This is very different from ’08.  We had levels in the market that we had never seen before and will probably never see again.  The financial system was on the verge of collapse.  We are not seeing signs that we are heading into a recession this time.  We have seen slowness in the reinvestment side in commodities.  But we still have employment growth in the US, great housing numbers came out today.  Canada is different because of our reliance on commodities, but North America is healthy.

The valuation is just too low to pass up at this level.  They will most likely increase their dividend in April.  They are still gaining market share.  His biggest concern would be a lack of pick up in China.

They are doing the Eglinton subway.  They have been around since the last 1800s.  Reasonable valuation at 12 times next year’s earnings.  They are off their highs because of western exposure, but little of that exposure is to the energy sector.

2016-01-27 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart BA-N Boeing

They reported earnings this morning and missed by a little bit.  The guidance for the next year was very disappointing.  He is a little concerned that the aviation business may be in for a bumpy ride.  The high US dollar is meaning that less people are flying into North America and this would eventually filter through to airline-related businesses.  You can hold it for the long term.

2016-01-27 WEAK BUY Must be logged in to use chart BAC-N Bank of America

The US banks have great value right now in relation to book value and don’t have the energy exposure that Canadian banks have.  He would prefer Goldman Saks for a US bank.  He would buy a US bank for the growth, vs. a Canadian bank for the dividend.

2016-01-27 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CCL.B-T CCL Industries (B)

(Top Pick Feb 19/15, Up 56.91%) His best performing stock last year.  They are a huge beneficiary of the low CAD$ as most of their business is overseas.  There is still room on the balance sheet for another acquisition some time this year.  It is richer than where he would buy it at right now.

2016-01-27 WEAK BUY Must be logged in to use chart CM-T Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce

CM-T vs. NA-T.  CM-T has better value.  Is concerned about NA-T’s exposure to the oil patch.  CM-T has concentrated more on the retail customer.  He does not think we have seen all of the repercussions of low oil prices.  The US banks are cheaper, but the currency is more expensive and you get the dividend tax credit on Canadian banks.

It is starting to get a little more attractive down here.  This one has held up a little better than CP-T because of less exposure to commodities.  We are closer to the end of the down cycle in commodities and you have to buy the rails in advance.  You might be early getting in now, but 2 to 3 years from now you will be happy.

2016-01-27 WAIT Must be logged in to use chart COST-Q Costco Wholesale

It has always been a very expensive company.  It is rich at 27 times earnings, but it has come down from the low 30s.  It is at its 200 day moving average so you might want to wait and make sure it does not come crashing through it.

2016-01-27 BUY Must be logged in to use chart CSH.UN-T Chartwell Seniors Housing

It is a pretty good long term hold.  4.5% yield and it is off the recent highs.  The payout is about 80% which leaves room for error or dividend increases.  They have promised another dividend increase.  Their occupancy rates are historically low so there is room for improvement there.  The retirement business is a tough business with low margins, but there is no shortage of potential clients, who are getting peak value for their homes as they move out of them.  He would buy at these levels.

2016-01-27 WEAK BUY Must be logged in to use chart DOL-T Dollarama Inc.

Both medium and long term it is a buy.  It did well until early December when they announced their earnings.  They were very cautious about guidance into the next quarter and next year.  Most of their products are imported and the low CAD$ is causing their cost of goods sold to creep up.  They have lots of room for store growth.  Dollar stores in the US don’t hold a candle to DOL-T.  It is at 22 times earnings.

2016-01-27 STRONG BUY Must be logged in to use chart GILD-Q Gilead Sciences Inc.

It has struggled lately.  Biotechs have gotten themselves in the crosshairs of the Democrats and the Republicans.  GILD-O makes a number of great products including the HEP-C cure.  It saves lives cheaper than a liver transplant.  It is down to 7.5 times earnings and that is low for a company with their pipeline.

(Top Pick Feb 19/15, Up 29.30%) He is still happy with it.  It has done very well since the new CFO came in.  Facebook keeps stealing advertising revenue from them.  They are getting great traction out of YouTube, though.

2016-01-27 SELL Must be logged in to use chart IBM-N IBM

It has had decelerating revenues for many years.  Earnings have held in only because of massive buybacks they do every year.  It is a classic value trap.  He would switch within the tech sector to something with more growth.

2016-01-27 BUY Must be logged in to use chart IPL-T Inter Pipeline

Pipelines have come down significantly with the rest of the energy sector.  He does not see the great justification in this.  They are not getting more or less revenue based on the price of oil.  Long term it could affect them, however.  It is caught up in something it should not be and so is presenting an opportunity.
