Markets. Thinks we are in the 1st half of a multiyear bull market. Even if we get higher rates, we are still going to be generational low, lower than we have been in the last 30 years. We have a long way to go to get back anywhere near a normal interest rate environment. Because of that, even though the S&P is trading at the upper end of the range, that historic multiple has been obtained in varying interest rate environments, none of which are calling for rates where they are now.

What percentage of investments could be in speculative stocks? This all depends on the individual. If you are very risk adverse, you probably shouldn’t have anything in speculation. It should certainly be no more than 5% of your portfolio. You could do this 1 of 2 ways. Either through very, very junior speculative companies or with seasoned companies through the options market, where you have a time risk element as well. He doesn’t recommend it for his clients.

A Canadian or US bank for a 3-5 year time period? He looks to the US for areas that he can’t get in Canada and banks are not one of them. Canada has some very strong banks and very well priced. There is also the added benefit of the dividend tax credit. He would stick to the Canadian banks. Toronto Dominion (TD-T) is his favourite and has exposure to the US as well.

(A Top Pick April 10/14. Up 75.02%.) This is now at about an 8%-9% weighting in his clients accounts. It is still cheap at 15X this year’s earnings. Thinks that Apple Pay is going to be a huge success. (See Top Picks.)

The best performing stock in the S&P 500 so far this year. At the upper end of its range. Just recently set a new all-time high. They are benefiting from increased orders for the Dreamliner. The other side of that is that with lower oil prices, the efficiency of the Dreamliner engines is not as important as it was. Trading at 17-18 times earnings, so it is not cheap.

Pretty attractively priced here. Trading at about 10 or 11 times this year’s earnings. If you believe that we are still in the 1st half of a bull market, as he does, this is going to continue to participate in that recovery.

2015-02-19 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CCL.B-T CCL Industries (B)

Label and packaging. (Resin type labels benefit from lower oil prices.) Also, aerosol and aluminum type packaging. 80% of revenues come from offshore. Stock has done extremely well. Trading at about 17-18 times earnings, so it’s not cheap, but very, very well-managed. Well positioned to take advantage of the falling Cdn$. Yield of 0.90%.

2015-02-19 BUY on WEAKNESS Must be logged in to use chart CGX-T Cineplex Inc

Came out with some great results earlier in the week and the stock crossed $50 for the 1st time. He is not selling his holdings, but it is a tough buy at these new all-time highs. Multiples have gotten a little bit rich. Very well-managed. Sort of a lacklustre box office in the 4th quarter, but they still managed to increase revenues. If he saw anything in the mid-$40, he would consider stepping in.

This stock is heavily dependent on the commodity price. He would bide his time before investing in a stock like this. A lot of the bad news is certainly reflected in the stock. Would prefer a company with a much sounder balance sheet.

They have a tailwind with the Obama care and increased health services in the US, along with an aging population. Very well-managed company. Not a cheap stock anymore.

2015-02-19 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart GOOG-Q Google

Last year this was a sort of underperformer, but the company’s earnings have continued to grow. Trading at about 16X forward earnings. Still lots of growth ahead of it.

Hurt by the fall in oil prices and the decreased activity level. However, they still have long-term contracts with most of their customers. A lot of those contracts are below the spot price. Even though we are seeing a slower environment, because their contracts are “take and pay” their revenue outlook for the next year to 18 months is still pretty solid. It’s not going to be in favour for a bit until we see the next ramp up in production. Yield is relatively safe. He would be very, very comfortable holding this one here.

Just announced earnings a couple of weeks ago and surpassed estimates. A multi-brand company, primarily in the US. Very, very well-managed company. Grows by both acquisition and organic growth.

2015-02-19 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart MFC-T Manulife Financial

Just sold his holdings and switched into Sun Life (SLF-T). Both are very fine companies. Sun Life has a little bit higher yield, but trades at a little higher multiple. Both companies will benefit from an eventual increase in rates.

Prefers Goldman Sachs (GS-N). The environment is still very, very solid, and we still haven’t seen a huge M&A environment, which will be a huge money maker for investments banks over the next couple of years.
