Markets. He is still pretty well fully invested. He is not a Market Timer, but just buys businesses that he thinks are good value. Not overly concerned about having a correction, as he thinks it will be rather muted. If you bought the S&P on the day before it peaked in 2011, you would still have a 12% annualized rate of return, over that 3.5 year period. If we see markets fall, cash will come in and underpin it.

Canadian Banks. Do you buy and hold? He tends to hold them. His favourite has always been Toronto Dominion (TD-T). If you were coming in with cash and looking to buy one bank, it would be TD. If you are looking to buy 2 banks, the 2nd one would probably be the Bank of Montreal (BMO-T). The commonality between the 2 is the exposure to the US market.

2014-08-28 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart AAPL-Q Apple

(A Top Pick Aug 26/13. Up 45.52%.) Thinks Sept 9 is going to be a big deal. We are going to see some new products and are also going to see a new business or two. Thinks they still have the brightest and best research department in all of technology. Had more cash allocated to research over the last 2-3 years. If you don’t own, he would buy half now and half after Sept 9th.

Reported their earnings about 2-3 weeks ago which were a little disappointing. This has been a great performer over the last couple of years. One concern is what they are paying for their new businesses. They might be pushing the envelope a little bit too hard. The low hanging fruit has already been taken. In a rollup model you have to keep that momentum going, so you might end up taking your eye off the valuation a little. He passed on this one.

The outlook for this is fairly positive. They have had everything but the kitchen sink thrown at them, in terms of fines and penalties and recovery of the financial crisis several years ago. Trading at 10-11 times earnings and paying a fairly decent yield. He prefers the Canadian banks.

Is it more desirable to buy a stock directly before or after a stock split? It really doesn’t matter. If you buy it before the split, chances are you are probably going to pay a smaller commission because you are buying fewer shares. As far as he is concerned, he would be buying a business, and it would be valued the same as it was before a stock split.

2014-08-28 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CNQ-T Canadian Natural Rsrcs

(A Top Pick Aug 26/13. Up 51.67%.) Spent a good part of 2013 in the penalty box. A very, very well-managed company. Diversified across natural gas, heavy oil and light oil. Growing dividend and growing production. This is still a Buy at current levels.

Sold off from about $3 early in the spring. Came down initially with some of the natural gas stocks coming off on lower natural gas prices. However, they also had a couple production hiccups as well. Have focused their efforts on the Montney. Trading at just over 4X cash flow. This has big potential.

Still likes this. Had a mishap, which was largely golf related. Have taken some pretty drastic steps in curtailing the floor space allocated to golf and let go of a lot of their golf professionals in the stores. This was unfortunate as the rest of the business performed extremely well last quarter. They still had positive earnings and positive same-store sales. Trading at around 15-16 times earnings. Very well-managed company.

This company has a great outlook. He has been watching and watching this one, but has not been able to pull the trigger on it. Always seemed a little bit expensive, but they keep surprising him and the earnings keep growing very, very nicely. He would like to be able to buy it at 15-16 times earnings.

He has a policy that if he has been burned by management in the past, he tends to stay away from those companies. It has done well. This is a bit of a roll up strategy, where they keep buying in smaller leasing companies. Easy money has been made in this and growth prospects are fairly muted from this point on.

2014-08-28 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart GILD-Q Gilead Sciences Inc.

Just added this to his portfolio during the dip in April-May. The main catalyst for the move on the stock has been the prescription numbers that come through on a drug called Solvaldi, which treats hepatitis C with a 96% cure rate. Trading at a ridiculously low multiple of about 12-13 times next year’s earnings.

A very solid company. They make Gorrilla glass. One of his concerns is the Sapphire Surfaces, but he doesn’t think the Sapphire Surface is going to be in the iPhone as it is expensive.

Next to Apple (AAPL-Q), this is his biggest weighting in technology. These are brilliant guys. They diversified the core business into other ancillary businesses. They spend a lot of money on R&D. Some of that has yet to come to fruition. The basic search engine is going to drive it for years to come. Trading at around 18-19 times earnings, which is a very reasonable multiple to pay for the growth that it has.

This is not a pure bank, but is an investment bank. Got tarred and feathered in the 08-09 crises. Was trading at that time at about 2X BV. Currently trading at about 1.1-1.2 times Book Value and is pretty attractive.
