Markets. The year started with a lot of volatility in the market with a lot of fear for the 1st Fed hike, last December, and people didn’t know what to do. There was a lot of stabilization by mid-February, and since then we have been slowly marching upwards. Not exciting, but clearly pretty good markets here. Investors should always be vigilant, especially at this time of year. Expansion since the bottom of 2009 has been 6+ years running. Expansions do reach an end at some point, so investors should be keeping a lookout for that. Perhaps it is going to drag out to be a slow, steady, longer expansion than what it was, with inflation and interest being lower. A different type of cycle than what we are used to seeing post the 2nd world War. Central banks in general want to normalize interest rates, however, they don’t want to rock the boat either. An interest rate hike may occur in July, or maybe later. In this kind of climate, investors want to look for undervalued areas in slow growing, top line situations and devalued or organic growth.

One of the few publicly traded auto dealerships. Grew very quickly through aggressive acquisitions. Have come down a long way because of their 40% exposure in Alberta. Still in a transition period. If you believe, as he does, that oil prices will rebound there should be a stabilization in the sales in Alberta, and the rest of their business should show through. Feels the downside is minimal and there should be some upside.

Markets specialty food products such as lentils, etc. This is gaining popularity, and Canada is able to grow a lot of it. They are really getting into the food ingredient business where they process them and put them into pastas, etc., where they get a lot more margins. They’ve been successful over the past few years. A good company. Somewhat volatile because of good and bad harvests. A well-managed company.

There is a question as to how attractive this can be, given that Air Canada (AC-T) has repeatedly said they want to renegotiate the contract. In the end, he thinks it will be a mutually beneficial solution that comes out. He would wait to see how the renegotiation goes. Dividend yield of 9.05% is very attractive and thinks they have enough cash to keep paying it for a couple of years.

This has had a great run. He sold his holdings too early. They have good positioning in the Canadian construction market. However, it is currently fully valued. Well-run company for the long-term, but wouldn’t necessarily buy it today.

2016-06-06 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart AYA-T Amaya Gaming Group Inc.

Did a reverse takeover of one of the biggest online gaming companies. With that they took on some baggage of legal troubles of the past company. There were also some headline issues of insider trading allegations by the Québec financial authorities. The business has good value. He would be a little leery until you see that management is focused and has its attention on running the company, rather than fighting other things. He is on the fence on this, but is a little concerned.

2016-06-06 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BAC-N Bank of America

This is a slow growth, low interest rate environment. Interest rates may go up a little bit, which will help the banks. Trading at a cheap multiple, but it needs to see some catalysts to get earnings growing. Hopefully higher interest rates will be it. A reasonable company to own, but they do need a bit of a kick.

2016-06-06 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BB-T BlackBerry

This has been sort of left in the dust by Android and IOS phones. It looks like they will stop making physical phones in the next couple of years as the market keeps getting smaller and smaller. However, John Chen has done a good job increasing the software and service revenue, which is where they want to be eventually. At some point the company will be turned around and sold at a good price. There will be more bumps before that happens.

2016-06-06 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BNS-T Bank of Nova Scotia

Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS-T) or TD (TD-T) and FinTech competition? Everybody is competing with FinTech these days and all the banks have issues. A lot of FinTech’s advantage is that they are not really regulated at this stage and can do a lot of things regular banks cannot do. Banks are taking measures including cutting costs, introducing new technology, etc. It is still early stage. The choice between these 2 banks is that TD has better exposure and this one has better International exposure. At this point he thinks TD is winning out with a steadier economy.

Calgary-based oil company and took on quite a bit of debt just before oil prices collapsed. At this stage, the debt load is still relatively high. However, with oil prices recovering to $50, and might get to $60 by year-end, they have a lot of leverage to the upside. If you are positive on the oil price, this is one that you should definitely own.

Not a name he owns, but has been looking at it. Has radio stations, TV stations, etc. Recently did an acquisition from Shaw Communication (SJR.B-T) which has really expanded their business in a positive way, but also took on a lot of debt load. He wants to see how this operates going forward. The 8.77% dividend is very attractive.

This had 2 outbreaks, one on top of the other. The issue is, can they gain back consumers’ trust. You go there because it’s cool and very healthy, as compared to others. They have a long way to climb back. If they can do that, this would be a screaming buy.

(A Top Pick May 14/15. Down 37.05%.) Got up to over $8 and then came back down. This company has organic growth. Their unique technology caters to the big growing construction market. They got hit with the big downturn in the oil market. However, they continue to grow in other areas.

They have proprietary 3-D design software. Customers tell them what they want, and are shown a 3-D simulation of what it is going to look like. Instantaneously it gets priced, sent to a factory and gets built. No other company can compete with that. Have a huge market and will grow organically.

2016-06-06 WAIT Must be logged in to use chart FIT-N Fitbit Inc

This is a dominant in the fitness tracking business, and they have good market share along with good products. The question is, what does a market really want. Meanwhile they are trying to roll out new products to compete with Apple’s watch. Spending a lot of money on product development. By the 2nd half of this year, it will probably be clearer as to whether they are successful and what the market wants.
