Markets. Largely a liquidity driven market. Investors are sick and tired of not making money in bank deposits and US treasuries so are coming to stocks, especially dividend paying ones. We’ll probably see this going for quite a while but there might be some corrections here and there. Fundamentals of the economy have been pretty weak. Growth is positive which is good and he thinks it is going to get better. Gains we are seeing are more than what he expected. There are long-term challenges which we should not ignore. The market favours larger cap, growth oriented, blue chip dividend playing stocks and this is how he is positioning himself.

What is your view on US banks versus Canadian and do you have a favourite U.S. Bank? On valuations, clearly the US banks are a lot cheaper, but for good reasons. Our economy had performed better and regulations had been more stringent. Canadian banks continue to be good plays. However, for better upside, you probably want to be in some of the US banks. J.P. Morgan (JPM-N) and Wells Fargo (WFC-N) would be 2 of the names that he would go to.

2013-03-07 WATCH ATP-T Atlantic Power Corp.

A couple of contracts have expired so the price they were getting for power generation will be a lot lower. Because of this, it was prudent to cut the distribution to make it sustainable however the market was not expecting the magnitude of the cuts. His sense is that things will clear up in the next week or so and that would be the time to look at it. Could be a takeover target if it became really cheap.

2013-03-07 BUY BA-T Bell Aliant

A more defensive name in the telecoms sector. Have a lot of rural areas which is more defensive. There is always a potential takeout by Bell Canada (BCE-T) the parent. Not looking for a lot of upside but the dividend is safe. Payout ratio is a little bit high for his taste but this is safe for the next couple of years.

2013-03-07 BUY BAC-N Bank of America

Exposed to the US economy and to the extent that this is recovering, this bank will do well. Still pretty cheap compared to Canadian banks. Feels US banks from this point will have good upside.

2013-03-07 BUY on WEAKNESS CAT-N Caterpillar

China’s economy has been slowing over the last couple of years and, in fact it bottomed last summer. Now it is coming back but the issue is, how quickly. His take is that it will be in the 7.5 %-8% range so the growth rate for this company will be slower. Has exposure to the housing market in the US as well, which is doing very well. Good name to own but be careful picking your entry point.

2013-03-07 BUY CFX-T Canfor Pulp Products

Just reinstated their dividend last quarter because results have been better on the pulp side. Clearly the dividend will be able to grow. Also, could be a takeout candidate by Canfor Corp (CFP-T), their parent.

2013-03-07 BUY CLQ-T Canada Lithium Corp.

Has just recently been buying this. Have a mine in Québec. There is clearly a demand for lithium. Once the company is up and running, they will make decent gains from here.

2013-03-07 HOLD DELL-Q Dell Computers

PC market has come under a lot of pressure and this company has not been able to come up with a solution. Michael Dell wants to take the company private and has made an offer of $13.65 a share. Big shareholders are asking for more. If he owned, he would probably hang on.

2013-03-07 DON'T BUY EMP.A-T Empire Company (A)

A conglomerate but primarily the business is Sobey’s supermarkets. They will be distributing groceries on behalf of Target (TGT-N). He is cautious on the whole sector.

2013-03-07 BUY FCX-N Freeport McMoran Copper & Gold

Made some big moves into energy recently, which is disappointing to most institutional investors. In any case, it is still the biggest producer of copper with good exposure to gold. Not expensive. Not his preferred holding in copper anymore.

2013-03-07 HOLD FTS-T Fortis Inc.

Nice and steady. Have been increasing dividends every year for a long time. Looking at their underlying businesses, it is clear they are not a fast growing business. Big growth comes from acquisitions, which is getting expensive. 3.6% dividend.

2013-03-07 TOP PICK GRT.UN-T Granite REIT

(A Top Pick March 1/12. Up 12.71%.) Just reported a good quarter. Everything is on track. They are renewing their leases with Magna (MG-T) but diversifying away from them by making some acquisitions. Under-levered balance sheet. Dividend of 5.27%. Can do a way more in the next few years which will really grow the dividends.

2013-03-07 TOP PICK JE-T Just Energy Group

SHORT. Has respect for what they have done growing the company in their revenues and customer base but fundamentally it is being overvalued. Everyone thinks it is a utility company. Do door-to-door sales for locking in gas and electricity prices and hedge on making margins. Have 4 million customers and lose about a quarter of their customers every year through non-renewal of contracts. Dividend yield of 15.78% which is unsustainable. Payout is way over 100%.

2013-03-07 BUY on WEAKNESS KO-N Coca-Cola Company

Have been focused on carbonated soft drinks but had been able to adapt to the times and bring on more products. You can’t argue with their execution and their brand value. However, it is not a cheap stock. Probably fairly valued and he wouldn’t be rushing in. Would wait for a setback and try to get it 10%-15% lower.
