Markets.  We had a tough summer with a 10% correction.  We are back to the starting point.  We had 6 pretty good years so a lot of stocks are getting expensive.  Selection of stocks will get very important.  The Fed is likely to start raising rates, but there is plenty of liquidity around.  There will be some volatility regardless.  We are not going back to the 3-5% growth from the past.  You need to choose stocks that will grow organically in revenue and earnings.  The US has the strongest economy in the world.  They were first into and out of the crisis.  So this has been a big focus for him.  He thinks the growth will spread out throughout the world slowly.  Eventually he will see a rotation into energy (3-5 years).  He trimmed his portfolio down to core positions and then opportunistically deployed his cash after the correction.

Where are we in the Business and Stock Market Cycles?  Cycles have changed quite a bit compared to what it says in textbooks.  Post-2000, they have been long and slower.  The recession was deep and the recovery slow.  It is difficult to say where we are.  Given the slow recovery and that the rest of the world has not caught up to the US, we are only half way through.

2015-11-10 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart BTE-T Baytex Energy Corp

The debt to cash flow is well over the comfortable zone.  They are not going to go bankrupt, however.  They did acquisitions in the US at the peak of the cycle.  If oil recovers then they will do well and he expects that next summer.  He prefers other companies with better balance sheets.

The numbers today are fine and in line with expectations.  Concession revenue looks fine.  It is a well managed company.  It is not cheap and you can only expect single digit top line growth.  Total return will be less than 10%.

2015-11-10 BUY on WEAKNESS Must be logged in to use chart DIS-N Walt Disney

It has great products and momentum (the force) is with it.  Analysts are focusing on the ESPN division with cable cutting and Netflix streaming.  The entertainment side of the business of DIS-N is doing well, but you might want to wait for a pullback of 5-10%.  The valuation is not exactly cheap.

2015-11-10 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart DRT-T DIRTT Environmental Solutions

Interior modular furniture.  They have 3 D design software so you see what it will look like and they can price it right away.  They are growing organically very, very quickly into healthcare, hotel and residential spaces.  Even without the big order last quarter they would continue to do well.

2015-11-10 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart FCU-T Fission Uranium Corp.

They were trying to merge with DML-T.  It was beaten down.  There is expectation for FCU-T to be taken over by a larger company and the merger was not for enough premium to the stock price.  They have a strong management team and balance sheet.  He likes it, but the price of Uranium is not a short term issue.  He expects a recovery in 2-7 years.  He has half a position.

(Top Pick Jan 6/15, Down 9.11%) They have a great balance sheet, but growth has been slow because they are not seeing a lot of suitable properties.  He would sell a portion.  If they are not going to use the balance sheet, someone else will (M&A, or share buybacks).

2015-11-10 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart HCG-T Home Capital Group

Hedge fund managers shorted it for the wrong reasons.  It has been hit not by problems in the housing market, but by mortgage broker fraudulent activities.  Even the effected loans are performing quite well, the company is saying.  Barring a big housing bust, the company is quite cheap at this stage and he would not be selling it.   There is no imminent sign of things going wrong unless you are focusing on Alberta.  He would be more interested if they started having more free cash flow and started buying back stock and/or raising the dividend.

2015-11-10 BUY Must be logged in to use chart JPM-N JP Morgan Chase & Co

They are the leader in US banking.  If you buy one, you want to own this one, if not WFC-N.  It is not as cheap as Canadian banks, but the one to buy if you want to buy the US banking sector.  He bought it because the interest rate is more likely than not and JPM-N will benefit from it.

They report in US dollars.  They had the largest drop in earnings in four years and it had a lot to do with currency.  But this is an accounting issue. It is Canadian and we buy it in Canadian dollars.  The currency has no fundamental effect on the company stock.  They have other issues that will be addressed.  He thinks you should add to the position.  The auto cycle will probably last a lot longer than you think.  He also owns LNR-T.

2015-11-10 BUY Must be logged in to use chart MSI-T Morneau Shepell Inc

Human resource consulting and IT outsourcing.  Most recently they added an employment assistance program.  They will grow organically and with acquisitions.  The dividend is safe, but growth will only be mid-single digits.  Own it for income.  There were specific issues with costs and credit and they recovered well from that, but the stock pulled back because of it.

Surged to a record high today on their acquisition.  The company have consolidated the business and got a lot more efficient as well as getting a lot more orders.  Today’s acquisition is a diversification.  It also adds some cyclicality to the business.  He would watch the debt load with an interest rate rise coming.  You need to see how they execute and if they pay down some debt before you get in.  At these levels you would be chasing it.

They have done great things and made good discoveries.  At current prices the discoveries will probably not be developed for 2-3 years when prices are higher.  If you like them, then add more later.  Money is moving here from FCU-T because it is an exploration play.
