Markets. We are seeing a rotation out of stocks that have been working into different areas now where investors are saying, okay this is the next leg. Last year markets were very strong. Looking underneath that, some sectors did very well and others did not, mostly mining. Has been a little bit of change in the last few weeks, with a tendency to take profits from a sector that did well to a sector that did not, and that is what we are seeing right now. Thinks it is going to be a pretty positive year overall. The risk would be if the momentum in the global economy does not continue however, he feels a lot of this is due to the harsh weather we have had in North America. Thinks this year is going to turn out to be a reasonable return year of 8%-10% but sector returns will be much more closely aligned.

Canadian $? Whether the dollar is going up or down is a question that every Canadian would like to know, especially if planning a March break getaway. Cdn$ has had a pretty good run over the last few years and we went to parity with the US$. This created a lot of problems for Canadian manufacturers. However, we have benefited from the whole global commodity boom with exports to China. This is not the case today which has created some weakness. Doesn’t see a lot more downside. Over the median side he can see a range of $0.85-$0.90 because our economy is basically linked to the US economy, and to a lesser point China.

2014-02-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BMO-T Bank of Montreal

Made an acquisition of a wealth management operation, mostly fixed income, in the UK. Canadian banks have done very well in general because Canadian economy and housing market has been weathering a downturn. The issue for everybody is looking for growth and this bank is no exception. We still have to see how well they can execute and integrate their acquisitions.

Nobody can dispute Mr. Buffett’s track record in investments. There are 2 issues. There is a natural tendency when you get bigger that the returns tend to diminish, which has happened. The other issue is a transition issue when Mr. Buffett leaves.

2014-02-14 BUY Must be logged in to use chart BTE-T Baytex Energy Corp

Their $2.6 billion deal to acquire Aurora was good and bad. This puts them into the Eagle Ford, which is a growing area, at a reasonable price and he gets them away from the Canadian heavy oil exposure. The bad thing is that a lot of investors were into this for their exposure to the heavy oil. Not a bad time to buy.

Basically 2 big drivers for them. 1) Construction, which hasn’t picked up until recently and 2) mining which has been experiencing a boom for the last 5-10 years and is slowing down right now. These 2 forces are offsetting somewhat so this is looking to be a transitional year. In the short term he would stay out but over time you will see construction in the US really pick up.

2014-02-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CP-T Canadian Pacific Rail

Crude by rail is clearly here to stay, especially as long as the pipelines do not get built. He expects pipelines will get built eventually and crude by rail will slow down but doesn’t think they will disappear. This is pretty richly valued and feels there are better names to own in this space, especially in the US.

Have done an amazing job in the Canadian retailing sector. So far they haven’t had too much of a series competition coming in, although there are a few. There is still room to expand most of the stores in Canada. They’ll continue to improve efficiency by taking different payment methods. Well-run. Not cheap. Buy on pullbacks.

Alternative mortgage lenders. Founders came out of Home Capital (HCG-T) a couple of years ago and have done very well. However, suddenly there have been some boardroom changes so there is a proxy battle coming in the next month or so. He is fully confident that the previous management will be restored and the company will be back on a growth path. This could double from here.

2014-02-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart GE-N General Electric

Their problem in the last few years was due to the GE capital business which is still 45% in earnings. They are trying to shrink that to about one third in earnings. Very strong in industrial, engines, aerospace, power. Likes it but he wants to see financial contribution come down a little bit more before he gets comfortable getting in.

2014-02-14 WATCH Must be logged in to use chart GIB.A-T CGI Group (A)

Has taken a bit of a hit because of the Obama care fiasco but this is a very small part of their business. The bigger issue is that they have been growing by acquisition and there is some question as to the real accretion coming on through that, as well as a little bit of differential between cash generated and earnings reported. A quality business and have been doing this for a long time.

(A Top Pick March 7/13. Up 3.43%.) Owns all real estate that Magna (MG-T) operates on. Have tons of cash that they can use to diversify. Acquisition pace has been a little bit slower than everybody would’ve liked, but they are steadily making progress. Just renewed a big contract with Magna. Pays a pretty decent dividend yield.

Not the only provider of camps and catering services but they are one of the big ones. Stumbled a little in the last quarter because of timing and manufacturing issues, so not a bad time to Buy. Good company. Upside from oil sands, LNG and mining is there.

2014-02-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart JCP-N J.C. Penney

Has been run by somebody who does not really have retail experience. This is the mid-level, mid-price range of department stores which is under siege from both discounters on one side and high-end and online sales on the other. The change in direction in the last couple of years was a disaster. They are now trying to get back to basics and making some progress, but he wonders if it is too little, too late. The only saviour could possibly be their real estate value where they may still get something out of it.

(A Short March 7/13. Down 19.71%.) Today this one is up 10%, so you give them credit for a good quarter. This is mostly due to the cold weather creating more gas consumption. They have 6X debt to cash flow.
