Market. The markets have not pulled off their all-time highs. Some of the Trump sectors, whether industrial or financials, were weak but the S&P was flattish. You are not getting money taken out of the equity market, you are just getting a sort of a churn into other sectors that have been poor performers. Now we are just waiting and seeing when tax regulation reform will come in, will he backdates it to January of this year or 2018. He is starting to look at Japan where he sees some opportunities, especially if the yen weakens. However, the general demographics of Japan makes him nervous. Sees Europe as the opportunity, and expects he will slowly be picking away at European companies, but there is still some nervousness because of the euro breakup. Europe should still do well as an exporter to the world.

Conscription receipts or common stocks?Conscription receipts started trading last week, and trading at least $1 below the stock. These basically turn into stock once the acquisition of the Washington utility gets approved. That might take a year. If the deal falls through, you get your money back. During that year, you actually earn the dividend on that receipt. He would probably play this through the receipts. He worries that a Canadian company can go into the US and outbid all the US companies, and basically pay more for the asset. What worries him more is that with the new Trump regime, what are they going to do with intercompany debt.

A great company to own as a play on defence and infrastructure spend. It has had a great run since Trump got nominated. Defence will go up. You buy this on dips.

2017-02-08 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart BMY-N Bristol Myers Squibb

This has an ugly chart, but is still a great company. When the stock got to $70, it was basically pricing in a lot of growth with their Opdivo immuno oncology cancer drug. Missed some trials on about 15% of the market for the drug, and the stock really got whacked. The market has pretty well taken out any earnings of this drug. 85% of the market is still available, so he thinks that over the next 3-4 years, they are still going to be a leader with immuno oncology. You are now paying 16X forward earnings for a company that normally trades in the 20Xs. Dividend yield of 3%. (Analysts’ price target is $55.44.)

2017-02-08 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart BPY.UN-T Brookfield Property Partners

Brookfield Asset Management (BAM.A-T) owns 65% of this, and this is their public vehicle that holds all of their trophy properties around the world. If you want exposure to Europe, Australia, New York and Canada, this gives it to you. Trading at about a 25% discount to NAV. Dividend yield of 5.15%. (Analysts’ price target is $33.95.)

2017-02-08 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CPG-T Crescent Point Energy Corp

(A Top Pick March 21/16. Down 21.19%.) This has been a disappointment. When he recommended this, oil prices were lower. After he recommended it they raised money at about $19.30, and ever since, the stock has been under quite a lot of pressure. There was a lot of misinformation from the company stating they weren’t cutting the dividend, and then they did; they were going to raise equity, and then they did a $500 million equity deal. He still owns some, but has trimmed over the last 6 months.

2017-02-08 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart FNV-T Franco-Nevada Corp.

This is how he plays gold for his dividend fund. It is a streaming royalty company, so they don’t have exposure to exploration hiccups. It is less volatile than the gold price, but pays a dividend and still gives you exposure to higher earnings when gold prices do go up.

2017-02-08 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart FRU-T Freehold Royalties

A Canadian oil/gas royalty company. Do the drilling on about 10% of their business, and on the other 90% other people do the drilling and spend the CapX, and they just get a royalty off the top line. Now that oil is over $50, there could be a dividend bump, because they tend to pay out about 70% of cash flow in dividends, and are currently at about 45%. Dividend yield of 3.83%. (Analysts’ price target is $16.36.)

2017-02-08 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart GE-N General Electric

A behemoth type of company and is in lots of different industries. Finally sold off their financial services. This has come off because they are getting into the Cloud and software. When you try to grow a business this big, it is very tough to do. The market is a bit nervous, so it is kind of a “wait and see” stock.

2017-02-08 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart GRPTY-OTC Groupe Eurotunnel SE

(A Top Pick March 21/16. Down 8.49%.) This is the Chunnel that runs between France and the UK. An interesting infrastructure play. Sold his holdings, but still likes the thesis behind it and is looking at it again.

2017-02-08 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ING-N ING Groep NV

This has had a good run and he is probably going to trim over the course of this year, and move the money into more capital markets focused banks in Europe such as a UBS or Credit Suisse. Dividend yield of about 6%.

2017-02-08 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart MIC-N MacQuarie Infrastructure LLC

Had owned this, but was concerned with the high dividend. This is MacQuarie’s vehicle to invest globally in infrastructure projects. They can afford it, because they are using the assets to raise debt financing, and based off of that, the dividend is fine. It is on his radar. He switched to Brookfield Infrastructure (BIP-N).

2017-02-08 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart NPI-T Northland Power Inc

They’ve locked themselves into some nice contracts over the next 5 years in some of the wind power new developments they’ve got coming from Europe. The dividend is safe. They’ve essentially put themselves up for sale and the stock is pretty much trading in the range of what companies could pay. Maybe an Asian company wanting to get some tax environmental credit. There should be word on the sale over the next month.

2017-02-08 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart NVU.UN-T Northview Apartment Real Estate

The apartment REIT sector is quite attractive. There are immigrants coming into Canada. With the way housing prices are going, people are going to need to rent. This company has a big focus in the North in Alberta. It was under pressure last year because of oil prices and what would happen in Alberta. Trading below its NAV and has a strong yield of about 8%. They are able to get CMHC loans against some of their properties, which makes their financing quite attractive.

2017-02-08 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart PFE-N Pfizer Inc

They’ve been focused in the last 12 months on cutting costs. Have massive amounts of consumer products and health care products and they are divesting brands. Pays a pretty good dividend. You should be able to get 10%-12% total returns on a stock like this. (See Top Picks.)
