Markets. Between now and May 5, markets are okay. This is because we are going through the earnings period for the 1st quarter. Bulls are saying “Look for some good news in the next 3 weeks.” because this is when companies have their annual meetings, announce dividend increases, share buybacks, etc. On the other hand the Bears are saying “Earnings are not going to be good for the 1st quarter, and in fact on average, earnings on the S&P 500 companies are expected to be down 4.8%.”. Beyond the beginning of May, it is a very different scenario. It looks like the Fed is going to increase interest rates for the 1st time, probably sometime in September. Since 1946, the Fed has changed its course on 13 occasions, where it started to increase interest rates. On every one of those 13 occasions, the stock market has been hit on an average of 10.1%. On 3 of those occasions, it has been more than 30%. It is not at the time of the actual increase, but it is the 6 months prior to the actual 1st increase. Between now and September, we are within that 6 month period. This is at a time when markets in the summertime are volatile anyways. Watch for markets to be okay for a while, but soon as it starts to spike, that is a clue that we have a problem.

He hasn’t looked at the seasonality on this, but he is guessing that it is going to be very good in the spring time, because that is when they are filling potholes, construction, etc. Chart shows a nice uptrend, but historically this tends to end right around the end of April. If you own, you will probably want to take some profits, probably within the next month.

Chart shows that this had a nice little break out in the last couple of days, so technically the stock is in an upward trend. It’s trading above its 20 day moving average and outperforming the TSE Composite. Technicals are all turning positive at this point. Seasonality starts turning positive around the 2nd week of April, and continues to be very strong right through until the end of May.

Seasonality is from around the end of January right through until usually May of each year. This year it started off very nicely and has had a breakout in the last few days. Above its 20 day moving average and outperforming the TSE Composite. It looks very good, probably until around the end of May of this year.

2015-04-14 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart COS-T Canadian Oil Sands

This has very strong seasonal influences. It tends to bottom some time in January and then move higher right through until the end of May. From a technical point of view, it is outperforming the TSE Composite and is above its 20 day moving average. Historically this has done very well to the end of May-June, so you still have another 5 or 6 weeks to go.

Seasonality is normally from October until January and then it kicks in again around now until May. This is okay for a seasonal trade. On a technical basis, you would like to see the stock flatten out, and if it got above its previous high, that would be a clear signal that the seasonal trade has clicked in.

Chart shows a long upward trend from 2012. When you are in an investment like this on a technical basis, stick with it. Seasonality picks up in the summer time. There are a series of healthcare conferences which helps the sector.

2015-04-14 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart HBM-T Hudbay Minerals Inc.

This has positive seasonality at this time of year. Typically it is from mid-October right through until around April/May of each year. Technically on a trend basis it is looking good and is above its 20 day moving average. It is also outperforming the TSE Composite right now. This gives 3 technicals which are positive and the seasonality is also positive. You should continue to Hold, but be aware that the seasonality ends sometime in May. Watch the technicals very closely.

2015-04-14 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart HXT-T HBP S&P/TSX 60 Index ETF

TSX 60 finally broke through a 7 year high, which is technically very, very good. This is in an upward trend, above its 20 day moving average and is outperforming the S&P 500. The problem is, once you get into May to October, volatility increases virtually every year, so you want to protect yourself by owning this until May and then look for some technical signals to take some profits.

2015-04-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart IEV-N iShares S&P Europe 350 E.T.F.

Is this a good time to buy a European ETF and should it be hedged? Historically European equity markets have almost identical seasonality to North American equity markets. Normally from around the end of October right through to the 1st week in May. The way to play this is through iShares S&P Europe 350 ETF (IEV-N). This is 350 of the largest companies in Europe. A really good way of playing the market.

2015-04-14 DON'T BUY Must be logged in to use chart IFP-T Interfor Corp

Interfor (IFP-T) or Western Forest Products (WEF-T)? He doesn’t really like either of these right now. They are both currently in downward trends. The price of lumber for the last month or so has virtually collapsed, and that is starting to have a direct impact on the lumber stocks. Lumber stocks have very strong seasonal strengths in both directions. They tend to be strong in October right through until March/April, and then from April to October they go down. Better opportunities elsewhere.

2015-04-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart MRE-T Martinrea

Historically the auto season does very well in the spring time. He would guess it is probably above its 20 day moving average. Also, the strength relative to the TSE Composite is currently positive. That’s 3 positives. On the other side of that, stocks like this have a history of peaking out at around May of each year. This means we are okay for another month or so, but watch the technicals very closely.

Seasonality on this is similar to most lumber stocks in Canada. Historically it is from October right through until April of each year. Last year it peaked out a little bit early, and did it again this year. Stock is now establishing a downward trend, trading below its 20 day moving average and is underperforming the market.

Love Don Vialoux's analysis of seasonal strength or weakness in regards to stock sectors. The patterns of seasonality that he points out are so interesting.
