Market. Within 24 hours after a US election, the market has already anticipated. You normally get “sell on news” the 1st trading day, which happens about two thirds of the time. After that, the markets move higher, because uncertainty has been taken away from the market. People are starting to think about what happens with the new mandate, and the market for the next couple of months goes higher. The inauguration is going to be on January 20, and people are then going to second-guess what they have done. The next 2 months, from around the middle of January right through until March, markets have uncertainty and move lower. However, after that there is one of the strongest periods in the 4-year cycle. It happens normally from March right through until around July. There is going to be a roller coaster. Some bad news, good news, bad news and then a really good move. By the end of next year, we should be significantly higher.

US$. There are 2 times of the year when there are very strong seasonal characteristics of the Cdn$ relative to the US$. Historically it moves higher, relative to the US$ from around the middle of March each year right through until May of each year. From around the beginning of November right through until the end of the year, we normally see the Cdn$ being weak relative to the US$.

A classic technology stock and does very well, normally from the middle of October through until the 2nd week in January. The chart shows this is currently coming close to the previous trading range, where we can expect the stock to continue to move higher. Technicals are positive, the stock is slightly outperforming the market and the trend is on the upside. Stick with this until the middle of January, at the time when companies love to announce new products.

Just had a very good report today, and the stock took a big pop. Seasonality is normally very positive at this time of year, through to at least the end of November. On occasion, this can extend to the beginning of January. This is because they give a lot of reservations leading into Christmas. Technically, the stock is in gear. It is looking very, very good. You want to take profits in the 1st week of January, because then things slow down.

US banks have a different seasonality than Canadian banks. Historically the best time to own this bank is from around the end of January right through until May of each year. At this time of year, it does okay, but doesn’t outperform the market. Currently the stock is in a long-term slight upward trend, but his preference is to stick with securities which have strong seasonality right now. He would prefer a Canadian bank over an American bank right now.

Gold has a lot to do with the presidential election. Gold does very well when there is a spike in volatility. In the last 3 weeks, we have seen the VIX Index go from about 14% to over 22%. When you see the VIX going higher, that’s when you want to be in gold and gold stocks. This stock has established a downward trend. Wait for the stock to start to bottom at support of around $3.67. Seasonally the best time to be in gold is in the summer.

(A Top Pick Oct 14/16. Up 3.2%.) (All these picks started off with positive seasonality between now and the end of the year. On the technicals, at the very least, you want the security trading in an upward trend and outperforming the market.) You want to continue holding this. Because grain prices have bottomed over the last couple of months, and are starting to turn higher, a good scenario for agriculture stocks.

2016-11-07 SELL ON STRENGTH Must be logged in to use chart ENB-T Enbridge

This is a good example of how seasonality works most of the time, but not all of the time. Historically it does very well between now and about the 1st week in January. This year, not so much. It has a long-term upward trend, but during the last month or so it has been trading below its normal level. Currently it is going sideways at a time when it should be going higher. Not one of his favourite situations. Any sort of strength in the next little while would be an opportunity to take some money off the table.

He can’t give a seasonal evaluation, because it hasn’t been around long enough. You normally need about 20 years of data. Technically the chart shows a long-term trend that is definitely on the upside. However, there has just been a bit of a dip where it has broken support level, and formed a double top pattern last week. However, the long-term trend line is still on the upside. Wait until the stock gets closer to the trend line, a little bit lower than current levels, and then consider buying at that time.

This is one of those stocks that has double seasonality. It has a very strong period of upside moves, and a very strong period of downside moves. Historically this has done very well from the beginning of October right through until April of each year. Something that is very important is the big arrangement with the Americans on softwood lumber, which is a very important issue for this company. They will be directly impacted by whatever the agreement is. Wait until you see what happens with that dispute.

Seasonally, transportation has done very well from about the middle of October right through until the 1st week in January. This just broke to a new high today, and completed a reverse head and shoulders pattern. On a fundamental basis, lower energy costs are going to help the companies going forward.

He chose the US agriculture because you can take advantage that the Cdn$ is going to be coming down. Seasonally this goes from about the end of September right through until the beginning of January. Technicals also look very encouraging. This is currently in an upward trend and is outperforming the market. It is doing well because we are finally seeing grain prices move higher, which means more money in the jeans of the farmers, which they can spend on fertilizers and equipment.

This is currently in the period of seasonal strength, which is normally from around the 2nd week of October right through until about the 1st or 2nd week in January. Technically, the chart shows a gorgeous upward trend. It is outperforming the S&P 500. Stick with this until around the middle of January.

Love Don Vialoux's analysis of seasonal strength or weakness in regards to stock sectors. The patterns of seasonality that he points out are so interesting.

If you like palm reading you'll like Don. I think most of the seasonality stuff he makes up as he goes along. His analysis is on seasonality, even he admits has lots of exceptions. Can't figure how he lasted in the industry so long.
