Economy. Thinks rates are going to remain low, probably into 2015. The Fed is doing the right thing by moving out of QE, which people were so worried about. That is not really increasing rates. Increasing rates is really when they push up the short end of the yield curve because of inflation and high growth. You are seeing better growth in the US. Unemployment is coming down and job growth is better. Also feels numbers out of Europe are better. It is too risky for the Fed to increase rates too rapidly when they feel the economy is recovering. Rates will go up, but at a much slower pace. He doesn’t think we will see rates go up until at least 2015.

Markets. Costs are still being cut, so we are not seeing top line growth as aggressively as we need to. In order to keep margins where they are or improve, we are going to have to see better top line growth. You do need this because, at some point in time, they can’t cut any more costs out of the system.

2014-08-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart AAPL-Q Apple

Can’t disagree that they have great products and that they have executed incredibly well. Not an expensive stock. Make almost 40%-50% of their revenue from one product, the smart phone. Have not come out with any game changers for the last little while. Unless they come out with some game changing it is much more financial engineering they are doing, such as buying back stock and increasing their dividend.

MasterCard or American Express for a long-term hold? This has this great brand name. Their clientele is much more affluent. The problem with it is that not every place takes it. Trades at a much lower multiple. If he was pushed, he would say that MasterCard is probably the better.

2014-08-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BAC-N Bank of America

Paying a $17 billion fine which actually pushes the stock higher. Only $9 billion is in cash. This is not the big issue. The issue is that they are finishing off with all these huge regulatory issues. The fact that they are able to increase their dividend is a sign that the Fed is much more comfortable with their balance sheet. Likes this company because the regional and global economies are recovering. Banks do well in a global recovery. This bank is very leveraged to the retail business in the US. Trading at 0.7X Book. Reasonable dividend yield. Expects their capital ratios are going to explode over the next little while, and they will have to buy back more shares or increase their payout ratio.

2014-08-14 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart BCS-N Barclays Bank PLC

Trades at about 0.6X Book and will be trading at about 7 or 8 times next year’s earnings. In their last earnings, their personal and commercial business was up a fair bit. They bought Lehman Brothers and took a lot of the fixed income business and put it into what they call a “bad bank” and are slowly disposing of it. They are really going back to their traditional retail business. They’re going to keep the investment bank, but are going to be a much more smaller bank giving a better return on equity.

2014-08-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BHP-N BHP Billiton Ltd.

BHP Billiton (BHP-N) or Teck Resources (TCK.B-T) for a long-term dividend/value investor? These trade on similar multiples. He likes this because it is a much larger conglomerate on the mining side. Although their big resource in iron is tied to China, they have other resources. With mining and China slowing down, they were able to sell off poor assets. Have Capital expenditures. This would be his preference.

2014-08-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CP-T Canadian Pacific Rail

Well-run company and continues to do well. He prefers Canadian National (CNR-T), which trades at a much lower multiple. Was not operating very well, but is certainly doing so now and that is the benefit. Doesn’t pay a very strong yield. A highly valued stock. The rail industry is in incredibly good shape. He would prefer something a little cheaper Such As Canadian National (CNR-T) or CSX (CSX-N).

2014-08-14 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart DE-N Deere & Co.

The agricultural business was weak because crop prices were down. He likes their construction/forestry business which he felt was under performing, but had actually outperformed in the quarter. You are not paying a lot for this. It may go a little bit lower from here, but he would be a buyer. Trading at about 11X earnings and pays a 2.83% dividend. Remember that the crop business is cyclical and if it turns around you will see an uptick in their product. Have reduced the number of people who sell their product, which has helped.

2014-08-14 BUY on WEAKNESS Must be logged in to use chart DEO-N Diageo PLC

Trading around 16 or 17 times and pays a decent yield. However, they have been forecasting some reasonable organic growth and some good margin growth. That has really not occurred over the last little while, which has hurt the stock. Have estimated about 200 million€, which to him indicates a need to do a lot more. Have some great brands and thinks they can have some decent top line growth, especially with good global economic growth in the next while. Expects the stock can go down a little bit from here.

2014-08-14 BUY Must be logged in to use chart GE-N General Electric

Has been critical of this company over the last several years because they had been given a very high multiple relative to other companies in the sector, for several reasons. They were able to grow by acquisition and made a lot of good ones, but that was really halted when they tried to buy Honeywell. Also, a lot of growth came from GE Capital, which had a very, very high return on equity. That was a very chunky part of the overall business. Have done a good job of restructuring, but you are not going to see the multiple that you saw many years ago. They have also gone into more highly cyclical areas, which makes it less likely that you are going to see multiple expansion. Has a good yield and not very expensive.

Has reduced his position in this. Stock has done incredibly well. Trading at a pretty high multiple for what is considered a utility. He would certainly take some money off the table.

2014-08-14 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart LNF-T Leon's Furniture

(A Top Pick Aug 29/13. Up 22%.) A well-run organization. Furniture business is a tough business, but they are very good at it. They own a lot of the property that the Leon’s stores sit on. If you look at the value of those assets conservatively, it is somewhere between $8 and $10. There is not a huge amount of competition.

2014-08-14 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart MA-N Mastercard Inc.

MasterCard or American Express for a long-term hold? This one is more like a tollbooth. When people use their card, they get a payment. They don’t have any liabilities for payment. If he was pushed, he would say that this is probably the better of the two.

2014-08-14 DON'T BUY Must be logged in to use chart MFC-T Manulife Financial

Not expensive. Trading at 10X earnings. Increasing their dividends which is great. When you look at the numbers and delve into it a little bit more, the financial side did well, but their insurance was down a fair bit. With interest rates being so low, it is hard for them to make a lot of money. He would prefer owning at bank instead.
