Markets. We are long overdue for a correction, especially in the US market. What he calls “free money” has really propelled markets higher than they should be. Interest rates are very low in North America, and in Europe some of them are even negative. Investors have been looking for places where they can actually earn something on their money, and have been looking at stocks, mostly dividend paying stocks. In the short term, that has pushed things beyond where they should be. He is hoping for a nice 10% correction where he has some cash that he can put to use. It is healthy to have corrections along the way. He thinks oil is going to go down again and the US$ will pick up, so that the Cdn$ and other currencies will go down again. He is still seeing attractive opportunities in Europe and Asia. Also, Australia is a market where he can invest without having currency risks. He is carrying about 10%-15% in cash.

If he had to own a commodity, aluminum might be one that he might want to look at. The problem with this company is that aluminum is the one commodity that they actually make and export out of China. He wouldn’t have too much money in commodities at all right now.

Money management, overall, is a growth business, but not so much for this company. They have had terrible performance. They’ve lost assets and money managers. This is a nepotism company.

2015-05-26 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart BAD-T Badger Daylighting

This went from being a dividend play, to being a value play, to being a growth stock, to being a momentum stock. Once the wind was taken out of the momentum stock, he started to become more interested again. It has come down a lot because about half of its revenue and earnings comes from the energy area. They have been successful in 2 things. 1) Moving their trucks away from energy towards utility and other areas and 2) growing their presence in the US. Earnings from the US are starting to come through. Dividend yield of 1.24%.

2015-05-26 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart BNS-T Bank of Nova Scotia

This is his only Canadian bank. It is the cheapest of the Canadian banks, with the second-highest yield of 4.24%. Investors don’t like the fact that it has a lot of operations in Latin America and in Asia, whereas he loves that. That is going to be where the growth is. He doesn’t want a bank that has a lot of Canadian exposure because of headwinds on weak energy prices.

(A Top Pick June 23/14. Up 41.61%.) A Canadian-based multinational consumer products company in the packaging business. The biggest label manufacturer globally, but is also in the aluminum can, plastic laminate tube business. Its customers are the premier consumer product companies. Based in Canada and reports in Canadian dollars, but most of its revenues are in US dollars and Euros. Made some very good acquisitions and thinks it is set for another major acquisition. The dividend is growing every year, and sometimes twice a year. He sees this as a $200 stock going forward.

2015-05-26 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CP-T Canadian Pacific Rail

It looks like in the near term the rails are going through a rough period. Canadian rails have benefited greatly from carrying oil to the US. As the price of oil has come down, there hasn’t been as much shipped. This is a short-term thing and the rails are probably underperforming in the near term. In the long term, he still likes them. Prefers Canadian National (CNR-T), but this is a fine company.

2015-05-26 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CPG-T Crescent Point Energy Corp

This is a serial acquirer and issuer of shares. This works great for investment bankers, but not as great for shareholders over time. They have had a tendency of buying in areas that are contiguous where they already have operations. He liked them when they were not buying and issuing shares. Recently sold his holdings.

2015-05-26 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart DIS-N Walt Disney

This will be a major beneficiary of increased consumer spending when it comes. They have some blockbuster movies coming which will probably do well. A negative for them is the strength of the US$, which will hurt it for foreign visitors. As far as Canadians buying US shares, it is difficult because the dollar is down at around $.80. The dollar looks vulnerable here, so it could be a plus to own this.

2015-05-26 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ENB-T Enbridge

The political environment towards pipelines has not being good. This is an interest rate play, and as investors expect interest rates to go up, this will not be a good area going forward.

2015-05-26 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart FLR-N Fluor Corp.

World’s largest construction/engineering company. The whole group has been under pressure and has not been doing too well. Within that group, he far prefers SNC Lavalin (SNC-T) because it has been hurt, not only by the global slowdown, but by the scandals which are now moving behind them, and he sees lots of good growth for them. He would look at SNC as one that has lagged and will outperform. Getting a lot of good contracts.

2015-05-26 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart FTS-T Fortis Inc.

His preferred utility has been Emera (EMA-T). Fortis used to be called Canada’s growth utility, which they have now ceded to Emera. There is nothing wrong with Fortis, but there is nothing exciting there. He feels both of them are a bit stretched. Both have been beneficiaries of the quest for yield. If interest rates go up it will tend to hurt utilities.

2015-05-26 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart GT-Q Goodyear Tire

This has a low P/E ratio because it is a cyclical stock. It has benefited from the price of oil. Its biggest raw material in making tires is oil. Also, you use tires to drive and as the price of gasoline goes down, miles driven goes up so the replacement of tires goes up. This will probably continue to do well.

2015-05-26 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart KNEBV-OMX Kone Oyj

(A Top Pick June 23/14. Up 27.84%.) Elevators and escalators basically have 2 businesses. One is new installations and the other is service. For new installations this probably has the biggest exposure of all the elevator/escalator companies to China. Growth in China has started to cool down some. In North America and Europe, it has big exposure to service contracts. This is probably going to get a bit of cooling right now.
