Markets. He has cash on hand that he can deploy for opportunities when they arise. Looking at a Hong Kong based shipping Company, possibly a European insurance company and some non-resourced based stuff in Canada. Canada is relatively less attractive to him than other markets. So much of our market is resource, material and financial based, so there isn’t a lot to choose from with any liquidity. He is looking a lot in Europe and Asia. Because the US$ has been so strong, it has been great for his investors because they have a good chunk of money there, but with the Cdn$ where it is, he is loathe to put much more into the US market.

Energy. He doesn’t see a bottom in oil right now. There could be substantial declines. There is nothing out there to make it turn around. When the summer driving season comes to an end, you start to get less demand for it. A big US refinery is off-line which is keeping demand for crude down. Commodities trade in decade long cycles, and we are only about halfway through here. That doesn’t mean it goes down for the whole decade, but can stay down and flatter for quite a while before heading back up again.

2015-08-19 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ACQ-T AutoCanada Inc.

A corporate owned auto dealer. Owns lots of dealerships across Canada, but with a high concentration in Alberta.  If Alberta is suffering, at some point new car sales in Alberta will weaken. This is going to trade pretty much like an oil stock. He would be cautious on this now.

2015-08-19 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart AFG-N American Financial Group Inc.

Specialty property/casualty insuring for niche markets, where there is not as much competition. Probably one of the most profitable insurance companies globally. About 94% of their investments are in bonds, mostly investment grade, so they’ll be a major beneficiary when interest rates go up.  Raises its dividend every year and have paid special dividends in the last 3 years. Dividend yield of 1.37%.

2015-08-19 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BAC-N Bank of America

A lot warmer to US banks than he is to Canadian ones. However, his interest in US banks is mostly regional banks, as opposed to big money centered banks. A lot of their earnings come from security markets. Interest rates are going to go up and he wants to benefit from the banks that will benefit more from that.

2015-08-19 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BAD-T Badger Daylighting

This is in the business of hydro-vac, moving of earth, and their customers are both in energy and utility fields. A lot of the business is in the oil patch, which is hurting them. Earnings in the latest quarter were down. They are expanding big in the US. Doesn’t see them increasing the dividends as long as energy is under pressure. A very good company to own for the long run.

Personally he would rather go to Casino Rama where he would have a better chance of making money. This is a terrible company. It is a nepotism company.

2015-08-19 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CARL-OMX CARLSBERG -B-

(A Top Pick Aug 1/14. Up 1.97%.) A beer company that is big in Western and Eastern Europe, especially in Russia. They are also in China. Liked that it is a consumers’ staple. However, it started to not act like a consumers product stock, all because of its exposure to Russia. There are 2 problems here. The Russian economy is very dependent on oil, and also every time Putin did something with Ukraine the stock was getting hurt. Because of this he exited the stock.

2015-08-19 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CPG-T Crescent Point Energy Corp

Their history is that it is a serial acquirer of other companies in its geographical area, and a serial issuer of shares, so the street loves it. When a company keeps issuing shares like that, it is hard for the share price to do well. The yield on the stock was quite high, and a lot of people got sucked into buying because of the yield. Had hedged oil at $90 a barrel. They can’t continue paying their dividend with oil at $40, and they can’t hedge any more. Investors should buy commodity stocks only when they feel commodities are going up. If you are a very long term investor, he is sure you will come out OK, but there is probably going to be some more pain in the near term.

2015-08-19 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ESN-T Essential Energy Services Ltd.

(Owns a small position.) A small cap, high quality oil service company operating mostly in Canada with some operations in the US. Unlike a lot of its competitors it has a pristine balance sheet so it will be a survivor. Really good management.  Recently cut its dividend and there is a possibility that if things stay bad for a long time, it will eliminate its dividend. Things will probably get worse for them before they get better.

2015-08-19 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart GE-N General Electric

One of the attractions is that management is trying to make it into what it once was. It had been made largely into a financial company instead of an industrial company. Have been getting out of financials and buying back into the industrial and health care type of area. The market is still waiting to see the results of unwinding the financial.

(A Top Pick Aug 1/14. Down 9.05%.) Had bought this at about $12 and sold it this year at $21+. Whether he gets back in is highly dependent on LCD screens and TV production and also on fibre.

2015-08-19 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart IPL-T Inter Pipeline

A mid-stream company and services the energy industry with existing capacity. Generally not as exposed to the energy cycle as oil companies are, but more exposed than Enbridge (ENB-T) and TransCanada (TRP-T). Just sold his TransCanada as he feels interest rates sooner or later are going to go up and it could be vulnerable. Doesn’t see the dividend not being safe, but as far as making any money on the stock in the near term, he doesn’t see it.

2015-08-19 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart MFC-T Manulife Financial

In general he likes the Lifecos, and a lot better than the banks. Prefers Sun Life (SLF-T).  Doesn’t own this because the old Manulife was extremely highly levered towards markets, and now they have gone the complete opposite and deleveraged, so they don’t have much leverage any more. Their US operation is not as well run as one would hope. Long term their China exposure is going to be a good place to be. (See Top Picks.)

The auto industry is doing really well, which translates into the auto parts companies. He is a value investor and this is not a value stock, but if you are a long term investor, it is hard to argue with its success.
