He likes that it is about 72% natural gas, and mostly in the Montney in BC. It recently sold a major piece of its oil operation in Saskatchewan. They are a low-cost producer. Great management. Dividend yield of 2.89%. (Analysts’ price target is $27.00)

2017-02-10 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BAC-N Bank of America

He has never been a fan of management. He only owns regional banks in the US. If he were to own a big US bank, it would be J.P. Morgan. This bank is a big beneficiary of the Dodd-Frank provision being repealed or pulled back. It is also benefiting from higher markets.

2017-02-10 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart BNS-T Bank of Nova Scotia

The only bank he owns, and it is because he wants their exposure in the emerging markets, Latin America and Asia. Also, he wants a smaller exposure in Canada, because he thinks the housing market in many areas is overextended and the Canadian consumer is way overextended.

2017-02-10 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CARA-T Cara Operations Ltd.

This has been a disappointing stock since he bought it. The largest restaurant company in Canada. It grows by acquisition and franchising’s operations. Alberta has been hurting the stock. Just made an acquisition of a large Québec operation. Trades at a discount to US counterparts. Dividend yield of 1.57%. (Analysts’ price target is $30.86.)

2017-02-10 BUY Must be logged in to use chart CNR-T Canadian National R.R.

The best run and most profitable railroad in North America. As a long-term investor, he would continue to hold this. It will benefit from increasing economic growth in both Canada and the US. It is not as commodity related is Canadian Pacific (CP-T).

2017-02-10 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CPG-T Crescent Point Energy Corp

A stock he has liked, but hasn’t owned for a long time. They went through a period where they were serial acquirers and serial issuers of stock. They went through a time where they didn’t make acquisitions and didn’t buy any other companies, and he thought that was great, and then they went and did it again. He would rather be buying energy companies where they are not diluting him down every time they start to grow.

2017-02-10 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CWB-T Canadian Western Bank

This has most of its operations in Western Canada, and is very tied into the energy market. It will sink or swim with energy stocks. Its underperformed the other banks. If you are a big believer that the worst is over for energy, and that there is growth ahead, then this probably has some leverage. He wouldn’t hedge quite like this. If you want an energy stock, he would buy it, and if you want a bank, he would buy a regular bank.

2017-02-10 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart FTS-T Fortis Inc.

A growth utility, and has been growing in the US quite successfully. Has also been growing its dividend consistently. The negative side is that should interest rates move up a lot, people will move over to bonds for the same rate, and not have to worry if the company is going to do well or not. In the meantime, this company keeps growing its dividend and growing its profits. As part of your portfolio, you should own stocks like this. It is a defensive stock, and you want a mix in your portfolio.

2017-02-10 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart GE-N General Electric

Had owned this through both good and bad times. It is becoming more focused as a health care industrial and energy services. He still likes the long-term, but it has been disappointing. Doesn’t look like it is going anywhere in a hurry.

2017-02-10 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart KNEBV-OMX Kone Oyj

This trades in Helsinki, but buy it on the pink sheets in the US under KHNJF. They are either the 2nd or 3rd largest elevator/escalator company globally. A big part of their sales is in China, which has been slowing down, but Europe and North America have been picking up. They get about 60% of their revenue from service, a high margin much more stable business. Dividend yield of 3.83%. (Analysts’ price target is €42.14.)

2017-02-10 SELL Must be logged in to use chart LB-N L Brands Inc.

His interest in owning any company like this, starts at zero and goes down from there. This company has a few retail brands, but they are basically in the middle of the market. If you want to be in retail, and he doesn’t, you want to be either at the high end or the low end. If you are in the middle, you just get squeezed.

2017-02-10 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart LIF-T Labrador Iron Ore Royalty

This basically gets royalties from Iron Ore of Canada. It has benefited recently by rising iron ore prices led by demand for steel. A fine thing to own right now.

2017-02-10 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart MG-T Magna Int'l. (A)

He doesn’t own anything in the auto area, but is an area he is looking at. Globally auto stocks are starting to act better. Europe has been a very poor auto market for a long time, but is starting to pick up. Also, things are picking up in developing markets as well. Believes the US economy will be doing a lot better than a lot of economists have predicted. That will be good for consumer confidence, jobs will be good, consumer confidence will pick up, and that will be good for auto sales. This company should do okay and is one that he is looking at. Dividend yield of 2.3%.

2017-02-10 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart MSI-T Morneau Shepell Inc

(A Top Pick Feb 3/16. Up 34.48%.) This is in the HR and outsourcing business for companies. Recently they have been expanding into the US. The stock has done well because earnings have been growing and because of the high-yield.

2017-02-10 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart PNR-N Pentair PLC (Ireland)

(A Top Pick Feb 3/16. Up 32.08%.) He likes stocks that are in the water business in various ways. This is based in the UK, incorporated in Ireland, and run out of the US. They are in the movement of fluids with pumps, etc. A lot of their business is energy related which held them back. As energy prices improve, that should be good for them.
