Markets. The BREXIT fears seem to be dominating the whole market. Yesterday you had the US$ being strong, the British £ being weak, both British and European stocks being weak, and commodities being down. This is because the US$ has been strong. With the shooting of the British Labour MP, things swung more to the “stay” side, so the £ started to strengthen, the US$ came off and commodities started to come up. It is all connected to what is going to happen with England. Thinks the market has overblown this, because it is not a binding vote, it is a referendum. The market views this as a crisis, and crisis equals opportunity. He has some cash and will be buying.

US banks are much more sensitive to the interest rate spread than what Canadian banks are. The US banks like to take your deposit money in short term and buy bonds that are longer term, and work off of the spread. As the yield curve is flattening as longer term rates come down, that ability to make money on the spread is going away, which is hurting US banks. He also doesn’t like this bank because it is an investment bank. The outlook does not look good, and is not going to be good for a while.

(A Top Pick May 26/15. Down 24.58%.) This is in the hydro-vac business. They build machines that uses high-pressure water to move earth. Half their business is to the energy industry, and the other half is utilities and governments. This is the biggest in North America and a consolidator. Still a Buy. Thinks we have seen the most of the downside for this.

A regional bank, mostly on the east coast of the US. They weren’t allowed to pay a dividend during the financial crisis, but as soon as they were allowed to, they did and have been increasing the dividend on a regular basis.

(A Top Pick May 26/15. Up 4.83%.) The only Canadian bank he owns. He doesn’t have big exposure in Canadian banks. The outlook for writing off loans is getting worse. He worries about real estate, oil/gas exposure. There are better growth opportunities outside of Canadian banks.

2016-06-17 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CAS-T Cascades Inc

A wonderfully run company with great assets. The problem is that they are full of debt. Until they pay off a lot of their debt, he is afraid to go near them. They are in 2 main businesses, tissues such as toilet paper and hand tissues as well as container and cardboard. This part is not economically sensitive and is mostly private label. The other side is box board and container board, packaging, which is much more economically sensitive.

2016-06-17 HOLD Must be logged in to use chart CNR-T Canadian National R.R.

Canadian National (CNR-T) or Canadian Pacific (CP-T)? He owns this one and prefers it. It has less commodity exposure and more cross-border north/south from Mexico. The whole transportation division has been weak lately, but likes it as a long-term investment. You don’t have to run out and buy the rails at this time.

2016-06-17 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart CPG-T Crescent Point Energy Corp

Likes this but doesn’t own it. It’s on his radar, and at the right time and the right price he will probably be buying it. Thinks oil and a lot of commodities went down too far and too fast, and then bounced back with a lot of Short covering. The outages in the Athabasca area, Nigeria and other places have caused an artificial shortage in crude. With the oil sands starting to come on, that is going to start to ease. Thinks oil is going to start heading down again, possibly the lower $40 or the higher $30, and then it is worth looking at.

The biggest telecom provider in Germany, as well as the biggest shareholder in the US in T-Mobile (TMUS-Q). He expects that sometime in 2017 they will be trying to sell their ownership of T-Mobile. The stock is highly profitable. Raises its dividend regularly. Dividend yield of 3.87%.

2016-06-17 DON'T BUY Must be logged in to use chart EMP.A-T Empire Company (A)

This is the parent company of the Sobey family, with Sobey’s being the biggest asset. This is the type of stock he would like to own because supermarkets are generally a good business. The problem is that Sobey’s bought the Canadian assets of Safeway, and it had a very, very tough time integrating those assets. Until they show the are doing a better job of bringing it around, he would avoid the stock.

2016-06-17 COMMENT Must be logged in to use chart ENB-T Enbridge

All the utilities and interest sensitive type stocks like this have been acting well, because investors have been looking for yield. This company is going to be raising its dividend quite sharply for a number of years, which he likes. They have some projects coming on. Some will make it politically and economically, some won’t, but he still likes the outlook for the next 3-5 years. The biggest risk is interest rates. If they start to go up again, all the pipelines, utilities and telco stocks will be at risk, as money will flow out of them and into fixed income.

An oil service stock. He still believes in the company long-term and thinks it is a survivor. They not only cut the dividend, they eliminated the dividend. He wants to be there for the long-term.

He likes this because it is continuing a transformation from being a financial services company, and more into what it was in the beginning, and industrial company. This is industrial, it has healthcare, makes equipment for the energy industry. He likes its return.

This has been hurt lately for a couple of reasons. In the fund industry it has been hard bringing in new assets. Money has actually been flowing out of equities and equity funds. Secondly, they are having a fight between the company and its founding partners. With that uncertainty hanging over it, you don’t know where this is going to be. Once that is out of the way, the stock should do better. Also, they charge high fees compared to other money managers.
