Markets.  This is the time for active management.  In a fast rising market, active managers will always underperform.  It is a momentum driven market.  In a gently rising or down market, active managers will outperform.  Active managers can hold cash.  So many managers hug the index.  You have to know what your fees are.  You want something with a relatively low fee.  Right now the broker only has to tell you what fee they are getting out of the investment.

Buy before or after a split?  Investors are enamored with them.  Now retail investors are a much smaller part of the market.  You don’t get stock splits like you used to.  It does not matter whether you buy the shares before or after the split.

Investing in the US.  You should not be 100% in Canadian stocks.  Canada is just under 3% of the world’s capitalization.  Because of takeovers and privatizations, the Canadian market is dominated by financials and resource stocks.  He has no idea where the Canadian dollar is going, but a portion of your portfolio should be outside of Canada.

2017-05-01 BUY Must be logged in to use chart BNS-T Bank of Nova Scotia

TD-T vs. BNS-T.  He has a small exposure to the Canadian banking sector, but is more exposed to the Canadian insurance sector.  His preference is BNS-T because it has the smallest footprint in Canada.  A lot of growth is dependent on capital markets.  TD-T has a big US exposure and he likes that, but these are not his choice.

They will benefit once interest rates start to go up.  Historically they have not been a well run bank and continue not to be.  There are better choices.  Also, he prefers regional banks.

2017-05-01 PAST TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart CARA-T Cara Operations Ltd.

(Top Pick May 2/16, Down 19%) It was a disappointment because their same store sales were pretty anemic.  It had to do with the oil patch.  Long term they are investing in their restaurants and turning them around.  St. Hubert in Quebec was a good investment.

It is a quality company.  They have an impeccable portfolio.  Their bad loans are miniscule.  They got thrown in with HCG-T.  He can’t say anything bad about it.  Their earnings were fine when they came out.  He does not think the latest budget will have any effect on them.

It pays a nice dividend.  It is one of two growth utilities in Canada.  They have diversified themselves into the US and also in the kind of utility they own.  They raise their dividends on a regular basis.  When interest rates start to go up meaningfully, it won’t participate in the same way.  It should be a part of everyone’s portfolio – either this or EMA-T.

2017-05-01 DON'T BUY Must be logged in to use chart GM-N General Motors Corporation

He is not interested in auto stocks although they are discussing it.  He would not buy this one, though, because he believes auto sales are plateauing in North America.  The big growth in auto sales is in Europe where GM just sold their European operations.  In downtown Toronto a lot of people are not planning on owning a car.

There is nothing wrong with the day to day operations.  This has all had to do with disclosure by the company or quality of its mortgages.  He was not a buyer before all of this.  He has been worried about the housing market and a bubble.

2017-05-01 TOP PICK Must be logged in to use chart MET-N Metlife

One of the biggest life insurance companies in the US.  It has gone nowhere in 10 years.  One of the problems is that it was designated as strategically important in the US and that is being appealed.  He thinks the ruling will be overturned.  They are spinning out their retail life insurance business.  (Analysts’ target:  $59.50).
