He likes this. Over the last 4-5 months, iPhone 7 was not as bad as he had expected, and also the services side of the business is growing faster than he had thought it would. Also, that is in the context of a not very robust economy. Looking at the product cycle coming, some of the big improvements they’ve made in their laptop and the Mac business and its low valuation, he covered his Short position and is now Long.

A number of analysts have said that this has had its day, it’s a hardware company and the innovation is done. Samsung was always a hardware competitor, and their problems is a great tailwind for this company. They have the tech right and the cameras are fantastic. People are more and more comfortable with the phones. It is becoming more of an integrated device with the watch. Conceptually he likes where the company is going. Technically, it looks phenomenal. Because of earnings, it has just broken up to resistance level, consolidating nicely and is ready to kick higher. He likes it.

He does not like where it is.  We are against all time highs.  It could break out, but there is definitely resistance here.  You could write a put option and get paid about 5% yield over the next year.  If it drops 20% then you will have to buy it and that is fine.  This is how he would play AAPL-Q.  If the option expires, then just do it again.

This has been pretty volatile. It started moving into a bearish pattern from its peak in 2015. It tried to base in 2016 and break out. It looks like the breakout is the real McCoy. It is going to have some technical resistance at around $135. Technically, the breakout is positive. However, there is some resistance coming up from the old highs. He would give it a 5 out of 10.

When looking at companies, he wants to make sure they have good visibility of cash flow. This company is more of a hardware company now, with a vast majority of its operating process coming from one product. Over time, this will evolve and service revenues will increase, which will hopefully mitigate some of the volatility and revenue stream, and allow them to branch out to other products. Valuation is compelling and they have a lot of cash, and could be one of the companies that benefits from the repatriation of corporate profits. He is concerned about the technology or hardware risks.

There were reports last year about downgrades but now they are reporting their Q4 tomorrow.  iPhone sales were actually pretty strong.  The first half of this year may be more challenging.  People are already talking about the iPhone 8 coming out in September.  It is a good entry point.  Apple tends to deliver after any disappointing report.  (Analysts' target: $135.50).

The PE multiple is low at about 10 or 11 times. Not a lot of growth and clarity, because the iPhone’s market penetration has probably been saturated. They are coming out with a new phone later this year, which is supposed to be quite a new design compared to the prior ones. They have a lot of cash sitting overseas, so if Trump is successful in reducing the repatriation tax from 35% to 10%, this company will be a natural beneficiary. Then the question is, what do they do with that money.

He sees catalysts in this. They have what is called a “refresh” or “repurchase” program with the iPhone. The iPhone 8 is going to be hitting right at that point and grabbing market share, and you are going to have people switching devices. That will bring a new revenue source for them. People have been concerned about declining iPhone sales, and he thinks they will increase in 2017. Repatriation would be massive for this company. They have over $150 billion sitting offshore. The expectation is that if it actually does happen, they are probably going to bring about $100 billion back, which could go into special dividends, dividend increases and share buybacks. Also, they have been significantly increasing the revenue for services. Dividend yield of 1.97%. (Analysts’ price target is $131.65.)

He likes this. The biggest challenge for the street is that many look at this company and expect it to look, feel and behave like it did 5-7 years ago. It is simply not the same. The business today is much larger and less nimble than it was 7-8 years ago. It is a much more mature business, a business that has much larger market share in many of the areas that it had where it had very little to zero market share about 10 years ago. Feels they need to beef up their dividend. It has a reasonable dividend of about 2%, but not enough to make investors and analysts look at it as a more mature business.

Likes this at the current valuation. He had been a bear on it ever since the watch came out. Apple has been given 2 gifts. Samsung Galaxy 7 was a really strong product, and would have been tough competition for iPhone 7, an evolutionary, not revolutionary product for Apple. When Samsung’s phones started catching fire, that was it for them. The 2nd gift was president elect Trump. If he is able to open up a tax holiday, where companies can repatriate their offshore cash, that is going to be a home run for this company. They have $236 billion in cash, with about 90% of it held offshore. 2017 will be the 10th anniversary that the initial iPhone was produced, so expect a huge product from this company at that time.

Technology in general tends to do well from October through to January. There are some technical concerns on this. Even though we are in the period of seasonal strength for technology, this really hasn’t benefited with the other economically sensitive names, post the Trump election rally. His office is divided on this. He is not a big fan, but his staff seems to like it better. He wonders if Apple can maintain the huge profit margins that they have. This is expensive, not from the point of view of the P/E ratio, but from the point of view of huge profit margins. It has been very unusual for companies like this to charge such high prices relative to their competitors for electronic goods. His concern is that they won’t be able to keep doing that for too much longer, in which case the stock would not do very well. 2016-09-26 BUY Liz Miller

She is a fan of it and you could be buying it here.  It has a lot of upside to go.  It is a product company, not a product cycle.  They can move forward without Steve Jobs.  It is a good buying opportunity.  She is watching the rumour mills of what they are doing in the auto industry.  She thinks there is certainly a lot of innovation to come out of Apple.

He is almost out, having been in and out three times.  Their days of growth are almost done.  This is the year when iPhone sales were lower than the previous year.  It should not be viewed as a growth stock, but as a return of capital stock.

2016-09-19 WAIT David Fingold

In order for this to work well as an investment, historically it has been necessary for there to be a lot of pent-up demand for phones. Some of the subsequent launches of phones since iPhone 6, has been that not so many phones have been “end-of-life”. Thinks there has been a boost in the short term because of the difficulty that Samsung has been having. He wouldn’t expect volumes to be very strong on this. He would wait for more pent-up demand.

I don't understand why the experts keep saying this is a cheap company. The stock is over $600 per share. That's not cheap!
