What Call Options would you use? The easiest way is to buy the option that is closest to the current price of the underlying stock. It is currently at $149.56, so he would look at a $150 Call. A $150 Call is the option that is considered to be “at the money”, because the Strike price is basically at where the stock price is. The “at the money” options tend to act most like an options contract, so you will get the bang on the upside and the hedge a bit on the downside. It is the most liquid option of the basket that you could look at. If you want to get a little more sophisticated, try and ascertain in your mind what kind of move you think is reasonable for the company based on your forecast for what the iPhone 8 is going to do for the company.

The iPhone 8 is going to be a major upgrade cycle. A lot of people are holding off for this upgrade, as opposed to the iPhone 7. The stock had a nice pullback and they are going to report earnings in 2 weeks, but what really matters is their guidance going forward in September. It closed at $145.06, and he has a model price of $184.61, a 27% upside. Dividend yield of 1.7%. (Analysts’ price target is $164.)

This has a product cycle coming up in September. Ahead of that, you are likely to see some kind of pre-positioning. Also, there has been a pretty sharp break, and you have to fill that gap before you can make new headway. It might be time to move on to something else. Healthcare has been pretty good right now. There are a lot of good drivers, but he would be a bit careful.

People have been saying that the Apple phone is going to fail for as long as he can remember. This has done very, very well for his clients. He has trimmed his holdings 8 times. A 3rd of their market capitalization is in cash. The iPhone 8 is the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. They are putting a lot of money behind R&D, and he thinks there are some good things that are going to come out. There is a 93% loyalty rate amongst Apple buyers.

He owned it on and off over the last couple of years but it had a good run.  What is their next trick?  The question is what’s next and he does not have a good handle on what that is.  They have this huge loyal user base and he thinks there is a huge opportunity with APPs.  They need to be better at capturing services revenue.  He prefers GOOG-Q.  If AAPL-Q pulled back 10-15%, it would be a lot more palatable.

About to go through a huge, huge upgrade cycle. Trading at about 16X forward earnings, which he feels is too low. They continue to be very innovative. The company’s strength is also its weakness. Its biggest weakness right now is Siri and the artificial intelligence. It’s very advanced artificial intelligence, but its ability to learn through machine learning is being retarded by having a closed ecosystem. Dividend yield of 1.7%. He would not be a buyer here. It is right at the top of its range. A lot has been priced into them being able to repatriate cash from overseas if there is tax reform, but as the administration continues to get distracted, he thinks this gets pushed out. He also has questions about their innovation. A lot has been priced into their next version of the iPhone, and they are going to have to sell a lot of iPhones very quickly to justify it. In other areas, they seem to be falling flat.

The stock has been doing quite well even though their revenues are only growing at single digits.  They have always traded at a low multiple because of a narrow product line.  In the last quarter they said 20% of their profits are from Apple app store, Apple music and Apple iCloud, which are all high margin.  They think it can double in the next three years.  That would justify a higher multiple that you are seeing now.

He still likes this despite its run up. It has a 4% position in the S&P 500 and is up 25%, and probably a 15% position in the NASDAQ. Has been a major driver of indices and performance year-to-date. The story is still attractive. You are getting the 10th anniversary of the iPhone in September, which should be a blockbuster product. By this time next year, with the new iPhone coming out, it has very low hurdle rates to jump over. Also, starting to ramp up their services business, which is very important for future growth. If and when Trump and the Republicans are able to pass through tax reform, this company has $250 billion of cash, whereby 95% of that is sitting overseas. If they were able to repatriate that cash and give it to shareholders, that would be a good thing.

An inexpensive technology stock. Wishes they would pay more of a dividend, simply because they have so much cash. The trouble is, a lot of earnings come from one product. That product can continue to grow, and is a very high margin product for them. Their service area is growing as well. Have a lot of cash, and they buy back a lot of shares. There is a good upgrade cycle on the phone. Their services business is additive, but not great. If they were allowed to bring their overseas cash back to the US, that would substantially help them out because they could buy back more of their shares.

Companies go through cycles, and this one is on the downside of a cycle. ROC peaked in 2012, and ROC has been going down since that time. It is still at 15%, which is very respectable. Many companies would kill to have a 15% ROC. Valuation is OK, but doesn’t jump out as being super cheap. There are alternatives that you should be in. When looking at companies, he wants to make sure they have good visibility of cash flow. This company is more of a hardware company now, with a vast majority of its operating process coming from one product. Over time, this will evolve and service revenues will increase, which will hopefully mitigate some of the volatility and revenue stream, and allow them to branch out to other products. (A Top Pick Dec 7/15. Down 1.83%.) He believes in the IOS operating system, and thinks this is going to move more towards a software company over time. It will get a higher valuation. It won’t be selling 50 million iPhones a quarter, and there might be some margin pressures, but meanwhile it is trading at 11X forward earnings, probably 9X net of all the cash on the balance sheet. This has huge, huge value in it.

He sees catalysts in this. They have what is called a “refresh” or “repurchase” program with the iPhone. The iPhone 8 is going to be hitting right at that point and grabbing market share, and you are going to have people switching devices. That will bring a new revenue source for them. People have been concerned about declining iPhone sales, and he thinks they will increase in 2017. Repatriation would be massive for this company. They have over $150 billion sitting offshore. The expectation is that if it actually does happen, they are probably going to bring about $100 billion back, which could go into special dividends, dividend increases and share buybacks. Also, they have been significantly increasing the revenue for services. Dividend yield of 1.97%. (Analysts’ price target is $131.65.)

He likes this. The biggest challenge for the street is that many look at this company and expect it to look, feel and behave like it did 5-7 years ago. It is simply not the same. The business today is much larger and less nimble than it was 7-8 years ago. It is a much more mature business, a business that has much larger market share in many of the areas that it had where it had very little to zero market share about 10 years ago. Feels they need to beef up their dividend. It has a reasonable dividend of about 2%, but not enough to make investors and analysts look at it as a more mature business.

Likes this at the current valuation. He had been a bear on it ever since the watch came out. Apple has been given 2 gifts. Samsung Galaxy 7 was a really strong product, and would have been tough competition for iPhone 7, an evolutionary, not revolutionary product for Apple. When Samsung’s phones started catching fire, that was it for them. The 2nd gift was president elect Trump. If he is able to open up a tax holiday, where companies can repatriate their offshore cash, that is going to be a home run for this company. They have $236 billion in cash, with about 90% of it held offshore. 2017 will be the 10th anniversary that the initial iPhone was produced, so expect a huge product from this company at that time.

Technology in general tends to do well from October through to January. There are some technical concerns on this. Even though we are in the period of seasonal strength for technology, this really hasn’t benefited with the other economically sensitive names, post the Trump election rally. His office is divided on this. He is not a big fan, but his staff seems to like it better. He wonders if Apple can maintain the huge profit margins that they have. This is expensive, not from the point of view of the P/E ratio, but from the point of view of huge profit margins. It has been very unusual for companies like this to charge such high prices relative to their competitors for electronic goods. His concern is that they won’t be able to keep doing that for too much longer, in which case the stock would not do very well. He argues all the time within his company about this. He doesn't like it while others like it because they are such an iconic company.  They've been good about product innovation.  Expensive considering profit margin.  Watch iPhone sales in the fall.

(A Top Pick Sept 3/15. Up 0.58%.) Still owns a modest size position in this. There is a lot of controversy, but at the end of the day, it is a great branded company, and people love their products and continue to buy them. This is trading for less than 10X earnings ex-cash, so is very cheap relative to the market. Has a huge amount of cash on its balance sheet. Over time, there are all kinds of opportunities for the company to get involved in the connected car, software as a service, data storage, etc.

2016-08-17 PAST TOP PICK Bruce Tatters

(A Top Pick Sept 22/15. Down 1.63%.) For the last year this has been a value trap. Concerns have been on smart phones and where we are in the cycle for them. Leading experts in the field suggest that the growth is not over, but has been dramatically slowing. Despite this company’s really, really tough problem this year, it has really been more of a comparison, because the prior years’ iPhone cycle was so strong. The new iPhone coming out is not expected to be that exciting. Valuation is so ridiculously cheap. No one ever gives it the value for its $230 billion of cash.

2016-08-16 COMMENT Andrew Pink

He likes the company, although he sold his holdings recently. You are really just watching for the quarters and the next iPhone release and how much it is going to sell. You can get into some volatile quarters. The dividend is very safe as the company has a lot of cash.

2016-08-16 COMMENT Christine Poole

Very attractively valued, and have a lot of cash, so it is a very safe balance sheet. The question is on its growth going forward. Product innovation is very important for a consumer products company. They have a new phone coming out in the fall, which will likely generate some demand. The weakness has been in their international markets, which is where most of their growth comes from. With the costs of their phones in the slowdown in some of those economies, demand has been softer. You could probably step in.

I don't understand why the experts keep saying this is a cheap company. The stock is over $600 per share. That's not cheap!
