The message, loud and clear, in recent weeks of earnings is the market is becoming more selective. Companies that delivered that earnings that would have been exceptional a year ago, are now facing pressure--strong earnings are no longer enough, but also need to justify high valuations, sustainable profitable, and a tangible return on AI. That enthusiasm about AI has shifted to seeing returns on investment and cash flows. This is healthy for the broader market, happening during surprising resilient economic growth. However, there's rising inflation above the US's 2% target. She's looking at companies' underlying cash flow and watching the bond market. Overall, the market looks constructive and you don't need to be defensive.

Tech slides on earnings, oil zigzags

It was a choppy day on the markets in New York and Toronto as disappointing tech earnings and forecasts hammered the Nasdaq 1.38% or 365 points lower. Influential were Alphabet (GOOGL) cratering 12.64%, Fortinet 20.09%, and ServiceNow -26.95%, reviving fears over AI costs as well as AI takeover threats.Outside tech, the S&P declined 0.3% and the Dow slipped 0.25%. In contrast, the autos space surged after Ford rallied 3.43% and Carvana soared 15.68%. While Bitcoin fell US$1,000 to US$80,255, the U.S. 10-year yield inched down to 4.945%.

Reports of the U.S. Vice-President reaching out to the Iranian government to restart peace talks were rebuffed by Trump and so far ignored by Tehran. Nonetheless, the news sparked a sharp sell-off in crude oil, though WTI erased the session’s losses to remain flat around US$102.90. The oil price triggered a slide in Whitecap shares of 4.01%. In contrast, massive gains by Bausch Health of 28.34% after an earnings beat, made healthcare the strong sector by far in Toronto, along with financials and utilities, as materials led three sectors down. Other movers on Bay Street: Alamos Gold -9.1%, First Service 3.99% and GFL 3.33%. Gold itself declined US$42 to US$4,025 and silver slipped over 3% to US$52.15.

Be careful here. If you took a loss, take some money off the table for a tax loss, then see what happens in the new year. If the AI story unwinds, it won't be good news for copper.

Up 13% after reporting. Is the top supplier of high-bandwidth memory, most in demand from data centres, perhaps more important than Nvidia. Trades at a very cheap 3x 2027 PE. They beat on revenues and margins and guided with accelerating growth. Shares in New York rallied more than 13% today.

The market expected today's Bank of Canada interest rate hike to 2.5%, given rising inflation fueled by rising energy prices from the U.S.-Iran war. It probably won't impact the TSX much because the index is heavily weighted in commodities and financials, which may actually benefit from higher rates. The hike follows the U.S. one. AI stocks are driving the market and there's a lack of market breadth. About half the S&P is tied to AI and data centres. But two-thirds of the S&P are trading below their 50-day moving average, mostly those not linked to AI, but that's where opportunities lie. He also likes energy.

The market is volatile. Everyday there is a sector or theme that works: one day AI works, the next AI isn't working, then it's energy or the hyperscalers, then not. We're all slaves to the algo trading and causes people to lose focus on long-term investing. He doesn't trade every two seconds; he focuses on the fundamentals, on quality businesses, over 3-5 years, companies that can grow EPS 10% annually and cash flow. He won't overpay for the enthusiasm for potential AI growth.  He's attracted to niche US software and IT now, and the hyperscalers.
