John Hood TOP PICKClaymore China ETFCHI-T19.140China ETF. Amongst China ETF's, you have the ones that are trading off ADRs with a little more emphasis on domestic consumption rather than the export trade. This one is not an ADR, but trades in Hong Kong rather than New York.2012-02-03
John Hood TOP PICKBMO S&P/TSX Base Metals ETFZMT-T17.570S&P/TSX Base Metals ETF. With the recovering economy, he feels this will do quite well. Basically based on futures contracts. 2012-02-03
John Hood TOP PICKiShares S&P 500 (CAD-Hedged) ETFXSP-T15.300S&P 500 (CAD-Hedged) ETF. Always has this one in his portfolio. You want to be in the S&P which is a broad market index.2012-02-03
John Hood CommentClaymore Broad Commodity ETFCBR-T22.750Broad Commodity ETF. He includes this in some of his more aggressive portfolios. Likes the product and the fact that it is global and commodity-based. Tends to be bullish on commodities right now.2012-02-03
John Hood BUYiShares DEX Short Term BondXSB-T29.170DEX Short Term Bond ETF. If interest rates go up over time, will payment per month go up as new issues come in? He always has these in his clients and personal portfolios. About2/3rds government and 1/3 corporate. If rates go up in the longer ones, you will get hurt. Duration is around 2.6-2.7 years.2012-02-03
John Hood CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020How do Puts work? A Put is similar to shorting a stock. You are buying the right to Put the stock to someone. The difference from shorting is that your losses are restricted to the cost of the Put. In other words, if you buy a $50 Put and the stock goes down to $45, you have the right to Put it to them at $50 so you make $5 minus the cost of the Put. If you had shorted you got a problem.2012-02-03
John Hood BUYClaymore Global Agriculture ETFCOW-T21.590Basically feeds and seeds and he likes this sector. There will be increased demand for that kind of product.2012-02-03
John Hood BUYBMO Covered Call Utilities ETFZWU-T15.390Covered Call Utilities ETF. Likes this one. What they do is right Calls against individual stocks, not against the index. He uses it for some of his smaller accounts where he can't adequately diversify among 3 or 4 different covered individual bank stocks. You have to realize that if the yield is 8%, that is not what you are going to get.2012-02-03
John Hood CommentHBP NYMEX Nat'l Gas Bull+HNU-T4.570NYMEX Nat'l Gas Bull+. These are for short-term trading. Maximum hold would be one week. You have to be on top of it all the time.2012-02-03
John Hood CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Buying Puts on a stock in a downtrend has been running up before reporting orderly numbers? This would obviously be for a short term hold. Not sure how successful this strategy would be on an ongoing basis for a whole bunch of different companies. This is into the gambling area.2012-02-03
John Hood BUYVanguard MSCI Emerg. Mkt. ETFVEE-T26.420MSCI Emerging Mkt. ETF. Certainly likes emerging markets. Pretty interesting one to have. Lower costs.2012-02-03
John Hood CommentiShares Nasdaq BioTech ETFIBB-Q120.640Nasdaq BioTech ETF. Certainly looks like it is breaking out. About 60% Biotech and 40% Pharma. Would have no problem going into this sector. Ilways a little concerned about going into something like this with US’s but with the Cdn$ doing so well, it might not be a problem.2012-02-03
John Hood PAST TOP PICKiUnits S&P/TSX Energy ETFXEG-T18.000(A Top Pick Jan 28/11. Down 11.74%.) S&P/TSX Energy ETF. Underlying shares have not been following the commodity.2012-02-03
John Hood PAST TOP PICKiUnits S&P/TSX 60 ETFXIU-T18.010(A Top Pick Jan 28/11. Down 4.66%.) S&P/TSX 60 ETF. Still very comfortable with this one.2012-02-03

John Hood BUYiUnits S&P/TSX Energy ETFXEG-T18.000S&P/TSX Energy ETF. Has been positive on this one for some time. Wouldn't have any problem buying this one.2012-02-03
John Hood BUYBMO Dow Jones Indus. Avg. Hedge ETFZWA-T16.470Dow Jones Indus. Avg. Hedge ETF. Likes this one. They sell the Calls on individual Dow stocks and hedged into Canadian dollars.2012-02-03
John Hood CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020For every stock the caller owns, he always sells a Covered Call at something like 15%-20% for a period of 6 months. For every stock you would like to own, he sounds a Put. What Puts selling today and how many months out do you typically try to strategize and what percentage do you try to strategize? Not quite sure where he is getting 15%. He normally like to sell the Calls out 6 months which gives him more downside protection. On the naked Puts, it depends on what your objectives are.2012-02-03
John Hood CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020What happens if an ETF company goes bankrupt? These are trusts, which means that the money is kept separate from the corporation that is issuing it. In this case, somebody will probably just take over the assets. You are okay.2012-02-03
John Hood CommentiShares S&P/TSX Capped REITXRE-T15.800S&P/TSX Capped REIT. Long-term hold writing covered calls or a short-term trade? He doesn't look at it as short-term. Also not sure you can do covered calls on it. Yield is about 5%. About 25% RioCan (REI.UN-T) whereas the Equal Weight REITs Index (ZRE-T) is equal weighted.2012-02-03
John Hood CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Markets. Not expecting any great plunges. If there is any weakness, he sees it as a buying opportunity. Europe has been doing the right things and it takes a great deal of time to finally resolve all these things. There are strong directional indicators that things are getting sorted out. Currently he is about 65% equities and 35% cash and fixed.2012-02-03

Robert McWhirter TOP PICKMiranda Technologies Inc.MT-T10.640Big benefit with the Olympics and the US election. Very strong 13% free cash flow yield. Potential acquisition. Dirt cheap.2012-02-03
Robert McWhirter TOP PICKGreat Western Minerals GroupGWG-X0.680More speculative. 3 pieces to creating value in rare earth. 1) 20% comes from digging it out of the ground. Reactivating a mine in South Africa and to have it into production in the 2nd half of 2013. 2) 40% is created by being able to separate rare earth minerals they have signed a deal with GCD, the only Chinese separation company. 2012-02-03
Robert McWhirter TOP PICKDescartesDSG-T8.10085% of their income is recurring revenue. Focused on the electronic transportation space. Continue to have very strong free cash flow. Good cash on the balance sheet so are continuing to do acquisitions. Recently acquired Telargo.2012-02-03
Robert McWhirter HOLDBCE Inc.BCE-T40.330Had a huge outperformance last year. With a decent yield, the stock moved up a great deal in price. In the last couple of months people have seen an improvement in economic growth and are moving out of the defensive plays. Continues to rank well in his Income Model.2012-02-03
Robert McWhirter HOLDIthaca Energy Inc.IAE-T2.890Company is expected to have decent earnings growth in future. Bringing on new fields in the North Sea and the UK. This would be of interest to about 5 potential buyers so he would continue to hold. Trading at about 8X PE.2012-02-03
Robert McWhirter BUYWestern Wind EnergyWND-X1.950US wind company. Have been able to get a 30% tax credit from the US government which dramatically improves the economics. Expecting the systems to fully generate and produce visible earnings and cash flow in the 1st and 2nd quarters this year. Could be a takeover candidate.2012-02-03
Robert McWhirter BUYFirst Majestic SilverFR-T19.890Pure silver mined in Mexico. Ranks well in his models. Expected to end up having decent earnings. Sales were up 59% year-over-year. ROE is about 30%.2012-02-03
Robert McWhirter DON'T BUYEastern Platinum Ltd.ELR-T0.550Gold, as a metal, has turned back up and this should drag along platinum. Overall earnings are declining about 20% year-over-year. Actual earnings growth is pretty modest at 8% for 2012. Prefers others.2012-02-03
Robert McWhirter WATCHRoute 1 Inc.ROI-X0.095Selective asset management technology is very good. They have a USB stick ($25 monthly) which allows you totally secure access via Internet anywhere globally. Used by the US military. Wait to see if they get increased sales.2012-02-03
Robert McWhirter CommentFortress PaperFTP-T37.300New plant they are buying and converting looks quite interesting. PE on a trailing basis is about 10X. ROE is interesting at about 20%. His Quant system does not rate it well because near-term earnings are declining dramatically. Was $.38 last year and the most recent quarter in November was minus $.51. If they can get it together, growth rate in earnings should be pretty good.2012-02-03
Robert McWhirter CommentPoynt CorpPYN-X0.145Holds patents on location-based mobile advertising. Expanding but unfortunately they are losing money. Expected breakeven in about 18 months but there are some new IPOs coming. Valuations are heating up in their space. Very speculative.2012-02-03
Robert McWhirter CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Markets. The S&P 500 for the last 10 years shows the last 5 a little more encouraging but the market seems to be overbought in the near-term. PE multiples are reasonable and he is optimistic the economy globally is improving. Feels that economic growth is going to be pretty good for the coming 1.5 years.2012-02-03
Charles Lannon TOP PICKRoyal Dutch Shell PLC (A)RDS.A-N71.740Too many Canadian oil/gas royalty trusts have too much debt. Also too many with bases that are long in the tooth and dividends that are going to be unsustainable in the low gas price environment. This company just reported with so-so results. Production was good. Refining was weak. Very modest increase in the dividends but he feels the 4.7% dividend will continue to grow.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon TOP PICKCML HealthcareCLC-T10.600Laboratory testing and medical imaging. Took a lot of risk out of their business by getting rid of their US assets. Attractive yield.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon TOP PICKGiant Manufacturing9921-TW0.000(Taiwan exchange.) Huge insider ownership. Largest bicycle manufacturer globally with a 12% market share. Attractive top line growth, largely as they expand into mainland China and sell a very large number of e- bikes (electric). Should be able to grow at a low double-digit growth for many years. Pristine balance sheet.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon BUYDiageo PLCDEO-N90.590(Market Call Minute.) Likes at these levels. Organic growth has really accelerated. Good core holding.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon DON'T BUYBP PLCBP-N45.530(Market Call Minute.) Broadly speaking, he does like the super majors. Great resource bases and stocks are not that expensive. Attractive dividend yields. This one seems to go from one operational issue to another so this would not be his preferred name.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon BUYOracleORCL-Q28.810(Market Call Minute.) Great company. Solid position in databases. Not as much growth as you would see in an Apple (AAPL-Q) or Qualcom (QCOM-Q) a good solid holding.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon DON'T BUYTelecom Italia SPATI-N10.270(Market Call Minute.) Really tough regulatory climate. Feels the dividend is really at risk.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon DON'T BUYTata Motors Ltd.TTM-N24.980(Market Call Minute.) Still too early for Indian equities. Wants to see more evidence that inflation there is under control and that short-term interest rates will cease going up.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon DON'T BUYVodafone Group PLCVOD-Q27.230An interesting telco. European in origin but has some emerging market exposure but is usually the 2nd, 3rd or 4th in emerging markets. Payout ratio is very high at roughly 90%. Given the regulatory environment in Europe, he would think the dividend is at risk.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon DON'T BUYKinross GoldK-T11.330One of the more controversial gold stocks. Bulls point to the potential of the asset base and Bears point to the checkered track record of bringing assets into production. He likes diversity of operations, low-cost structure, low geopolitical risks and a really sound operating track record. This company has the first 2 but not the last 2. Would prefer Goldcorp (G-T), Barrick (ABX-T) and Yamana (YRI-T) in that order.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon BUYLuxotticaLUX-N33.250Integrated eyeglass company. Manufacture for a whole host of brands, some of which they wholly own. They also retail. Well-run company. Gets far more of its revenue from the US than it does from Europe. Should be able to grow its earnings at high single-digit/low double-digit for many years to come.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon DON'T BUYCemex SACX-N7.860Sold his holdings in 2008. Cement industry is very fragmented. Debt level is enormous. When US housing recovers, this stock will do very, very well.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon DON'T BUYBoeingBA-N75.220Gets about half its revenue from commercial and about half from defence. Thinks outlook for defence spending is potentially at risk as governments try to get some of their spending under control.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon HOLDStarbucksSBUX-Q47.660One of the great things about them is the way they expand internationally. In non-American markets, they get the franchisees to do the slog of building the company out but retain the right to buy them out at 5-6 times cash flow, which is a very low price. Doesn't own because the barriers to entry in his industry are almost nonexistent.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon BUYTaiwan Semiconductor MFG.TSM-N13.910They are a foundry so do very little design of integrated semiconductors but do a lot of manufacturing. A big client of theirs is Qualcom (QCOM-Q). They are a direct beneficiary of the rise of mobile computer devices, smart phones and tablets. Very well-positioned. Huge technological leader.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon DON'T BUYCameco CorporationCCO-T23.570Doesn't own any uranium stocks. Doesn't see huge capacity for nuclear energy coming on anytime soon. Commodities are the most cyclical and volatile of stocks.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon PAST TOP PICK3M Co.MMM-N87.430(A Top Pick Feb 23/11. Down 1.23%.) Still one of the preeminent American industrial companies. Still likes.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon PAST TOP PICKThomson Reuters CorpTRI-T27.260(A Top Pick Feb 23/11. Down 26.5%.) Huge management changes in this company in the last year. Dividend is secure and he would like to give management 2-3 quarters for some kind of evidence of a turnaround.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon PAST TOP PICKSmith & Nephew PLCSNN-N50.600(A Top Pick Feb 23/11. Down 10.95%.) Medical devices. Just reported strong numbers. Volumes in replacement knees has suffered because of the economy but still likes this long-term because of demographic tailwinds. Strong possibility it will get taken out in 3-4 years by one of its competitors.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon DON'T BUYVeolia EnvironnementVE-N12.120Really suffers by virtue of being a European large-cap. Because of the debt level and high dividend payout ratio, there is some concern as to whether or not the dividend is sustainable. Too early to get into this name.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon CommentLloyds TSB Group PLCLYG-N2.020Shifting to a US bank? This bank is a huge favourite of deep value investors because the balance sheet is not that bad a shape. Opportunity for volume growth is very poor. With US banks, there will be a fair number of headlines where stress tests are going to come due in March. You might consider US Bancorp (USB-N).2012-02-02
Charles Lannon CommentBarclays Bank PLCBCS-N14.420(Doesn't own equity but owns a number of their fixed instruments.) With its geographic exposure, it doesn't have a huge opportunity to organically grow its deposit base. Prefers Standard Chartered Bank (STAN-LSE). You might use this as a trade, but not a long-term hold.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon BUYABB Ltd.ABB-N21.670Super high quality company. Prefers Schneider of France because they have a slightly better presence in emerging markets but nothing wrong with this company.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon DON'T BUYBritish American TobaccoBTI-A94.160Very large tobacco company. Very popular because it has a growing business in emerging markets. He has never been comfortable with litigation risks that tobacco companies face. Also many governments will be putting through austerity programs and excise taxes on this industry will be going up. Starting to see price competition. 3.84% dividend.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon BUYArcelorMittalMT-N21.310Steel stocks were amongst the very worst performing last year. Probably a good opportunity here where good quality steel companies are trading as low as 4X cash flow. Because of high fixed costs, they will never command huge multiples. If you own, there will probably be a holding period of about 2 years with a fair amount of volatility.2012-02-02
Charles Lannon CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Comment Investing. European Central Bank is providing extended long-term financing to a whole host of European private sector banks has taken the Armageddon off the table for a little bit. A whole host of data points, such as data from the US and China, are generally positive. Propensity for headline risks will continue to come out of Europe. Greece, Italy, Spain, etc. have huge bond refinancing that will be occurring on almost a weekly or biweekly basis. Investors can take advantage of this if they have a very good sense of what they deem to be quality in the market and work hard to put a price tag on it.2012-02-02
Don Lato PAST TOP PICKResearch In MotionRIM-T17.170(Top Pick Feb 22/11, Down 74.94%) sticking with it. Likes changes they made. It is a bet on QNX.2012-02-02

Don Lato TOP PICKPaccar IncPCAR-Q43.240Largest manufacturer of transport trucks – the Peterbuilt name. 197,000 trucks last year and 225,000 this year. 12-13sx earnings. $7 of cash. 2012-02-02
Don Lato TOP PICKAppleAAPL-Q455.120Blockbuster earnings. Appreciated after earnings but not to the extent that the earnings were a surprise. Their domination is not being threatened and they have lots of room for growth.2012-02-02
Don Lato TOP PICKTourmaline Oil CorpTOU-T25.020(Top pick Feb 22/11, Up 1.17%) Went public in 2009 and did everything right. Costs of production are about $0.50. Tremendous ability to stay in the game and weather the storm. We are going to see gas prices rebound somewhere down the road. Doubled production over last year and looks to be doubling over next 3 to 4 years and yet price is up only 15-20% from IPO. Someone might take a run at them and take advantage of the low prices.2012-02-02
Don Lato BUYVisa Inc.V-N106.060Owned Mastercard and then sold a year and a half ago to buy Visa but would buy both that these levels. Still looking at 20%+ growth. 2012-02-02
Don Lato DON'T BUYSirius Satellite RadioSIRI-Q2.120Not going to be a barn burner. People have their play lists on their iPod and so on.2012-02-02
Don Lato WEAK BUYCiscoCSCO-Q19.800Short term still going to be plagued with fact that lots of customers are government. Europe earnings slowdown expected. Doesn’t know if there is that much growth to justify a big commitment. Multiple is very attractive here. Would prefer other stocks with a higher multiple but lots more growth ahead of them.2012-02-02
Don Lato BUYSuncor Energy IncSU-T34.250Trades with price of oil but is off high’s. Still well off its highs of a couple of years ago. Owns for some of the portfolios.2012-02-02
Don Lato BUYTim HortonsTHI-T48.820Little bit of pullback off highs. Good solid company. Not a table-pounding buy. Growth should continue over next couple of years. He would be interested at these levels or lower.2012-02-02
Don Lato BUYShoppers Drug Mart CorpSC-T40.200Ended year well, one of the better performing stocks on the TSX. Pulled back on news of target’s announcement of expanding into Canada with pharmacies in their stores. Looking at 13-14% earnings growth. Take advantage of dip.2012-02-02
Don Lato BUYToronto DominionTD-T77.750Canadian Banks: Outlook is mildly positive. Scotia did an equity issue slightly below the market. All about 10x earnings yields between 3.75 and 5%. He always comes back to TD. They don’t get themselves involved in any issues.2012-02-02
Don Lato DON'T BUYPfizer IncPFE-N21.110Dividend is safe, growth prospects of many of the large Parma are very muted.2012-02-02
Don Lato BUYNew Flyer Industries Inc.NFI.UN-T65.700Actually a better performer on the TSX this year. Distribution is very secure. There is going to be a change to the dividend but will go down in August when they convert to a corporate structure (dividend and div tax credit). Strong backlog, although shrinking a little bit. Steady production until the end of the year. 2012-02-02
Don Lato BUYInter Pipeline FundIPL.UN-T18.430A solid holding. He has held it for years. Distribution has grown steadily but price has kept up so yield is down to about 5%. Wouldn’t expect a lot of appreciation but you will see dividend increases as the pipeline comes on stream. Always a hope of merger or acquisition. It is widely held. 2012-02-02
Don Lato N/AA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Markets: Helicopter Ben is up to his tricks; saying inflation is not a threat. All this money going into the system is bound to come out into the economy. Need more confidence in the global expansion. For now we can look for low rates through the end of ’13. If US doesn’t fix debt, investors will lose confidence. You are looking to the end of the election year and if there is a change they will give him at least a year more. Market will be okay for the next few months. He thinks any surprise will be on the upside. A pullback here would not be a surprise, though.2012-02-02
Mike Newton TOP PICKCanadian Natural RsrcsCNQ-T40.160A big heavyweight in the Canadian market. This can generate huge cash flows. He is bullish on oil and believes it will stay where it is and move slightly higher. Emerging market is still strong.2012-02-01
Mike Newton TOP PICKStarbucksSBUX-Q48.240Stores are packed. They are efficient. Service is crisp. The new K cups (?) are coming out, which is a joint partnership with Green Mountain coffee. Growing at about a 30% pace in foreign markets and a 20% pace in North America.2012-02-01
Mike Newton TOP PICKAncestry.comACOM-Q30.210All their metrics are good. Coming up in April, the US 1940 census will be coming out. About 135 million lives will be available for individuals to research. Also, it is featured quite heavily on show on NBC. The one downside is that they have made some changes to their subscription rates and he's not sure this is sustainable.2012-02-01
Mike Newton BUYiShares MSCI Brazil ETFEWZ-N67.340(Market Call Minute.) MSCI Brazil ETF. They are very reliant on China, just like Canada. Feels it has the wind at its back.2012-02-01

Mike Newton HOLDAmazon.comAMZN-Q179.460(Market Call Minute.) Disappointed with them. Earnings were good but revenues were bad.2012-02-01
Mike Newton BUYSherritt International Corp.S-T6.370(Market Call Minute.) Have made quite a few management changes. Good resources and likes the property in Madagascar.2012-02-01
Mike Newton BUYAnnaly Capital Management Inc.NLY-N16.890They basically own mortgages that have bought off Fannie Mae (FNMA-Q2) and Freddie Mac (FMCC-Q2) and have very good yields. They borrow money at very low costs and then leveraging up and buying mortgages. You have to watch this like a hawk. One thing that is very supportive of this is that interest rates are not going up for 2 years.2012-02-01
Mike Newton CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Canadian junior miners? Very exciting sector right now. His preferred way to play it is through the BMO Junior Gold Index ETF (ZJG-T) and B2Gold (BTO-T).2012-02-01
Mike Newton CommentBCE Inc.BCE-T40.680Seem to be making some really good inroads with some of their products. If you own, consider owning Telus (T-T) as a complement to this one.2012-02-01
Mike Newton DON'T BUYManulife FinancialMFC-T11.940The entire life insurance space is been a very difficult one in the last couple of years. It wreaks havoc on their bond portfolio when the US Fed says rates are going to be kept low.2012-02-01
Mike Newton BUYCoca-Cola CompanyKO-N67.850Really attractive. You will be in good shape with this one.2012-02-01
Mike Newton BUYCanadian Oil SandsCOS-T24.230Just reported and was in line with expectations. Starting to move up quite nicely. Feels it has some good potential upside right here once the Syncrude story gets going and starts running properly.2012-02-01

Mike Newton CommentBMO Covered Call Cdn Banks ETFZWB-T14.170Covered Call Cdn Banks ETF. (Caller is 28 and is looking to hold for a long term.) This is a very safe vehicle, but won't have fast growth. Current yield is about 8%. For a 28-year-old he would prefer the Equal Weight Bank ETF (ZEB-T) and average down over time.2012-02-01
Mike Newton BUYBoeingBA-N75.370Not a big fan of airline stocks but does like part manufacturers. This company is in a very good position right now with their new aircraft being out. Although he doesn't own it, he would be looking at this right now.2012-02-01
Mike Newton BUYSuncor Energy IncSU-T34.510Hasn't been with this company for a very long time but he would absolutely enter this one. Looks like a pretty good space.2012-02-01
Mike Newton CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020US ETF’s? Into RRSP’s? From an investment viewpoint, there is really no issue with what kind of ETF’s you buy. Whether it goes into your RRSP or not, is not that important. But you do have to be careful how their holdings are taxed. MLPs are very popular and you can buy an MLP ETF with a yield of about 7% but there is a disadvantage on the way this is taxed. Suggests you should talk to an accountant on this.2012-02-01

Peter Brieger WAITResearch In MotionRIM-T16.400He would hold it but not buy it. He wants to see how the new team works, what they will focus on going forward. They have a great franchise, new operating system so he is not despairing about the company.2012-01-25
Peter Brieger BUY on WEAKNESSTeck Resources Ltd. (B)TCK.B-T42.470Seen 20% in S&P and 10% in Toronto since October lows. Likes it because of the demand from China. Would buy except for worries for a short-term pullback in the markets.2012-01-25
Peter Brieger BUYInter Pipeline FundIPL.UN-T17.500Never thought the third party contract for management was the main driver behind stock price. Conservatively run company. Management’s objective is to make sure there is enough cash flow to cover the distribution.2012-01-25
Peter Brieger TOP PICKCentral Fund of Canada Ltd (A)CEF.A-T22.490Gold/Silver play. Believes in diversifying between the two metals. No futures contracts so you are getting the pure goods. Believes gold will become part of the new world financial system. It is a currency and there is no liability. Highly attractive. Feels gold will go higher. 2012-01-25
Peter Brieger TOP PICKScorpio Gold Corp.SGN-X0.910Chairman has bumped production rate for this year and it could produce 50-60 cents per share. Before buying it, realize only two people covering it. He is very bullish on it.2012-01-25
Peter Brieger TOP PICKBonavista Energy CorpBNP-T22.800Bought yesterday. Likes the nat. gas story long-term. If gas heads for $1.50, the shut-ins will kick in. 6% dividend.2012-01-25
Peter Brieger BUYBCE Inc.BCE-T40.950Doesn’t know why it went down this morning. Dividend is safe. They know their holders are long term and want income. There is increasing competition in that whole space and something may have happened that put BCE down.2012-01-25
Peter Brieger HOLDTrans Canada CorpTRP-T41.790Sold it because of negative keystone outcome. Thinks that in fact you will see the keystone pipeline built. There is too much pressure from American politicians for the jobs and oil. Thinks it will get built but it is dead money for 6 months except for the dividend. Doesn’t see any tragedies for them.2012-01-25
Peter Brieger DON'T BUYAppleAAPL-Q446.660Remarkable story. Attributes the boost in sales to Steve Jobs death. He thinks there was a collective moment worldwide where everyone said that they had to go buy an Apple. It was such a huge global story. He won’t chance it here unless it pulls back.2012-01-25
Peter Brieger DON'T BUYKinross GoldK-T11.300Could be taken over down here. There wont be production growth for a couple of years and could be faced with higher mining costs in the mean time. Doesn’t buy on speculation of takeovers.2012-01-25
Peter Brieger BUYAgriumAGU-T81.020It is two businesses – retail + wholesale. Likes the long-term outlook for corn even though ethanol subsidies have gone. Prefers this to POT2012-01-25
Peter Brieger WEAK BUYPotash Corp of SaskatchewanPOT-T45.480AGU is cheaper. The problem they have both been having is that there is excess inventory of potash and hurting the price. India and China are resisting the higher price but longer term he would recommend it.2012-01-25
Peter Brieger BUYScorpio Mining Corp.SPM-T1.990Next week they will probably announce plans to complete expansion of existing mill. It will be in operation in the first quarter of next year and help cash flow in 2013. There are a lot of very interesting geological prospects on the property. They hired a geologist.2012-01-25
Peter Brieger DON'T BUYManulife FinancialMFC-T12.550It’s cheap for a good reason. Interest rates over the next couple of years could stall its recovery. Dividend is stable. If you had a 5-year view you would be ok.2012-01-25
