Opinions from Darren Sissons

BUYBCE Inc.BCE-T39.810If you can find a good quality telecom and hold it over time, GDP growth is about 2% and the telecoms find a way to take 2% of your wallet. Reasonable dividend. Good balance sheet. Reasonable growth profile.2012-04-12
TOP PICKCorning IncGLW-N13.730LCD’s, which is everything from cell phones through to TVs through to screens. That business is currently having a pretty tough time but market is starting to rationalize supply, which will be good for the story. Into a joint venture with Samsung and ultimately any earnings will be 100% credited to earnings. Also make fibre-optic cable and the telecom business will do really well. Fortress balance sheet. Very cheap.2012-04-12
CommentVodafone Group PLCVOD-Q27.195Emerging market exposure. It effectively builds a portfolio of assets, builds them up, sells them off and monetizes assets. Its biggest stake is 44% of Verizon Wireless (VZ-N), which just recently paid its 1st dividend. Margins in India are very skinny but Africa is quite large growing market. Slow growth story but you get big dividends.2012-04-12
TOP PICKAir Products & Chemicals Inc.APD-N89.49029 years of consecutive dividend increases. Good balance sheet. Buying back shares. Should benefit from the low natural gas prices. 2.8% dividend.2012-04-12
HOLDBHP Billiton Ltd.BHP-N71.810Probably best of breed of large-cap companies. Good balance sheet, great dividend and good growth profile. In the next little while they're going to have to spend a ton of money upgrading facilities and ports. There is slowing Chinese demand. On the positive side they are getting into the energy business, which is currently about 30% of earnings. You might want to wait for an Australian dollar pullback and perhaps slightly lower commodity prices. If you get it a good entry point it could be a good long-term hold. 3% dividend.2012-04-12
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Markets. Expecting Q2, Q3 and Q4 should see a weaker Europe and some earnings revisions as the austerity measures start to take effect.2012-04-12
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020What sector would you recommend for a young person just starting to build their portfolio? He would suggest buying some good quality dividend paying stocks. Telecom sector has generally performed quite well. Utilities are a little rich right now but as the economy starts to recover a little bit more you might be able to cycle into these as well. Start with something safe that has a good dividend.2012-04-12
WAITTelefonica S.A.TEF-N15.360The big driver for the drop in price is effectively the issues in Spain. High unemployment, very competitive market and Vodafone has been effectively putting the boots to them. Company cut its dividend. Longer term he doesn't think the story is going to end really badly. If Spain can stabilize and growth in Latin America continues you can get some growth. Would wait 12-18 months.2012-04-12
PAST TOP PICKABB Ltd.ABB-N19.930(A Top Pick Jan 30/12. Down 8.09%.)2012-04-12
PAST TOP PICKRoyal Boskalis WestminsterBOKA-EUR0.001(A Top Pick Jan 30/12. Down 7.74%.) (Euronext Exchange) Europe is basically unwinding but the business is doing fine and is growing. Very inexpensive. Still a Buy.2012-04-12
CommentTelecom Corp of New ZealandNZT-N10.390Is the 9.5% dividend safe? If there is a decline in the currency, it could be affected. Recently spun off Corus (?) division, which was a one time special dividend, which created a significant spike. Going forward, it will follow the Australian telecom space and bring a broadband network out.2012-04-12
DON'T BUYOverseas ShipholdingOSG-N10.410There are some issues happening with regards to the shipping industry. On the container side you have overcapacity. 2010 was a record year but 2011 was a very poor year and you are generally starting to see freight rates climb. There are others that he would prefer.2012-04-12
PAST TOP PICKCARLSBERG -B- CARL-OMX 0.000(A Top Pick Jan 30/12. Up 5.85%.) Carlsberg Beer. (Trades on the OMX Exchange). Still likes.2012-04-12
TOP PICKWm Morrison SupermarketsMRW-LSE0.000(London Stock Exchange) The best performing supermarket chain in all of Europe last year and had positive growth. Buying back shares. Good dividend. Vertically integrated.2012-04-12
DON'T BUYAppleAAPL-Q544.470If you look at Apple, it is a product story. He would look in our own back yard. More upside.2012-03-01
HOLDFord MotorF-N12.660We have seen some recovery but he is not that bullish. A bit of a cyclical and there are other better ones to chase at this point. Thinks Asia represents an opportunity.2012-03-01
TOP PICKCorning IncGLW-N12.970Glass products and LCDs, which have been having a very tough time. Likes to buy good companies that are really beaten up. Going to be a big growth story. Telecom sector is going to build out with fiber optic. We will see a recovery in consumer TVs, etc. Reasonable dividend, room to grow, great balance sheet.2012-03-01
BUYMicrosoftMSFT-Q32.290Much slower growth profile. Will transition into a much bigger dividend payer. You can make some money in a trade. It’s a total return story. If you don’t see growth from here then it is a transition story. 2012-03-01
BUYIndustrie Natuzzi-SPANTZ-N3.45012% dividend, payout is fairly high. When the price of lamb is high, he buys New Zealand products. They recently spun off a division. Special dividends to be paid out but you are too late to get that now. You will get some growth, but not as much as Asia. It is an ADR so yield is quite high (when New Zealand dollar is high) so it does move around.2012-03-01
N/AA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Markets: When you get exposure to BRIC countries you are getting exposure to growth. Europe has been a strategy and is continuing to unwind. If you have exposure to the BRIC you will get growth. Wants companies with good growth prospects, good balance sheets, likes dividends, but they don’t always have them. He likes ADRs, Hong Kong, foreign listings, to get around the Sino forest problem. 2012-03-01
PAST TOP PICKABB Ltd.ABB-N20.700(Top pick Jan 30/12, Down 0.29%) tied to infrastructure development in BRIC countries. Longer term should continue to do well.2012-03-01
PAST TOP PICKRoyal Boskalis WestminsterBOKA-EUR0.001(Top Pick Jan 30/12, Down 2.12%) De sanding harbors. Infrastructure like wind farms off shore. Very good balance sheet and inexpensive, paying a good dividend, so he likes it long term.2012-03-01
BUYFrance TelecomFTE-N15.370Is in a reasonable position from the balance sheet point of view. 2012-03-01
SELLPetroleo Bras Sa PetroPBR-N30.450Is concerned about Brazilian inflation – the official and the unofficial rates. Government is interfering with the running of these companies. He sold another because he didn’t want to get involved in the interference by the government in the running of the company. It’s a show me story and you have a governance issue. Do you really want to be there.2012-03-01
TOP PICKCARLSBERG -B- CARL-OMX 0.000(Top Pick Jan 30/12, Up 1.22%) Stable revenue business. 40% earnings are from Russia. Are taking out a major competitor that will be accretive. Recovered quite nicely. It has recurring revenue.2012-03-01
TOP PICKMTR Corporation Limited.0066-HK0.000Own rental properties in subway stations (70% of their revenue), recurring, 4 Million passengers a day. Have managed subway stations around the world. Should expect an increase in the dividend as they have been doing. Last year was a bad year for emerging markets.2012-03-01
DON'T BUYMicrosoftMSFT-Q29.610Has had a good run over the last 20 years. From a longer-term value perspective, is going through a transition. It needs to transition into a either a slow mature growing stock or has to find a catalyst for higher growth. Won’t be a big growth story in the next 2 to 3 years.2012-01-30
CommentA T & T UST-N29.340This is a dividend aristocrat type company that has paid a dividend increasing for 15 years. 6% dividend and a good balance sheet. Currently it has problems with its pension and has to pay for its smart phones being added to its network. There won't be a lot of growth here.2012-01-30
HOLDVodafone Group PLCVOD-Q27.200As a value investor, he likes the story. Paid a special dividend in Jan/12, which came through Verizon (VZ-N) which took annualized yield up to 8%. Also has growth aspects, as it is exposed to India and parts of Africa.2012-01-30
DON'T BUYArcher Daniels Midland CompanyADM-N29.710One of the underlying catalysts for this has been the grand peripheral (?) trade. That whole valley chain has caused land prices for farmers to reach inflated levels. As, at the same time as a Chinese big demand for these food commodities. Longer-term, you have a backdrop of sovereign risk at the banking levels for the US governments. Wonders if longer-term, the trade is going to unwind.2012-01-30
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Europe. He is currently buying in Europe. Moving forward, he suspects there might be better opportunities in Europe. Perhaps towards the end of the year might be a bit better to pick up new positions.2012-01-30
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Facebook IPO? Personally, he would not own this at this time. It is going to run very quickly. Historically these are trading stocks. If you want to trade, the duration will probably be 30 days.Facebook IPO? Personally, he would not own this at this time. It is going to run very quickly. Historically these are trading stocks. If you want to trade, the duration will probably be 30 days.2012-01-30
CommentTelefonica S.A.TEF-N17.460Headquartered in Spain and has 10 European operations along with 175 million subscribers in Latin America. However, in the last couple of years Spain's economy has imploded giving a ton of headline risks for the company. Recently took steps to cut the dividend so the stock has fallen to about $17. If Spain can recover there should be continued growth. There is value, but you might have to wait a little while. Prefers China Mobile (CHL-N).2012-01-30
TOP PICKABB Ltd.ABB-N20.550Leveraged to the Chinese/Indian (?) grid modernization effort. Pays a good dividend. Very strong balance sheet. Has the balance sheet to make acquisitions.2012-01-30
DON'T BUYiShares MSCI Brazil ETFEWZ-N65.410MSCI Brazil ETF. Wouldn't go to Brazil right now as they have a big issue with inflation and commodity trades are starting to unwind. Commodity companies are going to be what drives Brazil.2012-01-30
TOP PICKRoyal Boskalis WestminsterBOKA-EUR0.001(Euronext Exchange) Dig out harbours and de-sand them so it is a return revenue business for high volume ports like Hong Kong, Long Beach, etc. Recently made 2 acquisitions allowing them to do more initial infrastructure of building ports. Very inexpensive.2012-01-30
DON'T BUYPetroleo Bras Sa PetroPBR-N30.730Generally what he doesn't like about Brazil is its inflation. The biggest problem is that there is starting to be Brazilian government influence for these companies.2012-01-30
HOLDVisa Inc.V-N99.880Likes the payment processing area. Tons of recurring revenue, 60% operating margin, dividend increases, buybacks. Stock has run up 40% over the last 12 months. Will be a good, long-term hold. All they really good value has been taken last year.2012-01-30
TOP PICKCARLSBERG -B- CARL-OMX 0.000Carlsberg Beer. (Trades on the OMX Exchange). Became a value stock last year when it fell on the back of some weak earnings from Russia. Russia accounts for about 40% of the company's earnings. Expect that beer production will increase going forward.2012-01-30
