CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Hedge Funds & Commodity Prices: Hedge funds can cause the market to dislocate in the short run. Example: Uranium spot price is around $60 where the longer-term price is around $90. Speculative money going in and out of commodities is going to have a big affect.2008-07-10
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Short Selling vs. Option Trading As a Hedging Strategy: Option trading basically uses leverage, while short selling doesn't use that leverage as much. Option trading is great as long as you know what your exposure is to the underlying asset.2008-07-10
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Salida Multi-Strategy Fund: - Pretty aggressive trader. Hedge out market risks quite a bit. Don't always get it right. Have some big drawdowns but right now they are sticking with the commodities and have done very well. Up 10% to date. Their performance is still great. Likes what they do.2008-07-10
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Hedge Funds & Gold: Hedge funds are opportunistic and sometimes can be proactive and at other times reactive. 2008-07-10
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Sprott Opportunities Fund: Manager Jean-Francois Tardif recently won an award for being the #1 Canadian Long/Short manager on a risk-adjusted basis. Very good fund. Stressful for him to run because he goes long and he goes short very quickly depending on market conditions.2008-07-10
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Sprott Hedge 2 is run by Erik Sprott and is up about 15% since it was his Top Pick in March.2008-07-10
TOP PICKA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Goodwood Fund: Going out on a limb on this one because people are going to look at the performance and see it is down 18% to 20%. It tends to be an activist deep, deep value fund. His track record has been phenomenal for the last 10 years. In 2 or 3 years you will look pretty good in this one.2008-07-10
TOP PICKA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Arrow Enso: Global fund. Have done a fantastic job over the last few years. You don't look for this one to shoot the lights out or generate 40% return but they've never had a down year in the last 5 years. Up about 10% year to date.2008-07-10
TOP PICKA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Vertex Fund: One of the best portfolio managers over the last 10 years. One of the longer track records in Canada for long/short equity. Do a lot of merger arbitrage and with the global credit crisis a lot of people are worried and they have taken advantage of this.2008-07-10
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Dynamic Power Hedge Fund: Management has done a fantastic job over the last 5 years. You have about 10 X your money if you bought it five years ago.2008-07-10
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Man AHL Diversified Fund- One of the biggest hedge fund companies in the world, they manage about $70 billion. There is no correlation in their top fund to the world market, which means it’s a good addition. There up over 25% this month. 2008-03-28
WEAK BUYHBP Financials Bull+ E.T.F.HFU-T13.570Horizon BetaPro Financial Bull EFT- Has come out with a number of products, some are 2-times levered to the upside of the market, some are 2-times levered to the downside of the market. It’s a great way to play the financial market. Know that it is levered. 2008-03-28
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Risky Hedge Funds- Long, short equity strategies never really have any problems. The more volatile the underlying security, the less leverage you have to use. If you have a low volatility strategy, you will have to leverage it up very high (30:1). Leverage hurts you when liquidity dries up. 2008-03-28
TOP PICKA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Arrow JC Clark- Very none market dependant. Has only around 30% net longs. Very opportunistic, has no resource exposure. 2008-03-28
TOP PICKA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Sprott Hedge 2- Its manager is the biggest Bear in Canada. If financials continue to get hit hard and gold and energy do well, this fund will be up a lot. 2008-03-28
TOP PICKA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Salida Multi-Strategy- An aggressively run fund. They can be very long to the market, they can be short or they can pull off the risk very fast. Volatility has increased with this product quite a bit. Their performance is still great. They’ve developed a good track record. 2008-03-28
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020The difference between a hedge fund and an ETF- An ETF tracks an index wither up or down, not a lot of active management. A hedge fund wants to take away the market risk, they pick their own stocks, which takes away/add risks. They may short an ETF against the hedge fund. 2008-03-28
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Commodity market- Sprott is very long gold and energy. The fundamentals for these sectors are very good and there is still value there. 2008-03-28
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020A Hedge Fund Portfolio- The general number is 10-15% of portfolio in Hedge Funds. A 20% holding can actually decrease the volatility in your portfolio. Typically you should stick with a hedge fund for quite a while. 2008-03-28
TOP PICKA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Sprott Small Cap Hedge Fund – Only 10 days old. Manager has proved to be one of the best small-cap managers over the last 15 years. Just moved from managing $1.5 billion to $30 million fund where he can be more flexible. He is up around 20% on the year.2007-10-11
TOP PICKA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Dynamic Power Hedge - 5 years old and has gone up 10X since inception. Averages about 60% a year. Good management. The small size allows him to concentrate his positions. Will be volatile.2007-10-11
TOP PICKA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020C. I. Trident Global Opportunities-Manager has one of the brightest hedge fund minds in the world. Has been treading water for the last couple of years because he has expected a credit crunch to happen, and when it finally happened he was there. This fund would be for the bears.2007-10-11
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Hedge Funds - There are about 20 different hedge fund strategies, but 3 basic types. Relative Value-More arbitrage based, which may exploit the inefficiencies of markets. Event Driven- Basically when companies are merging, taken over, coming out of bankruptcy, distressed securities. Directional-This could be a global macro fund.2007-10-11
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Hedge Funds versus Mutual Funds- Hedge funds are generally more flexible. He describes these as a car with breaks. A hedge manager can put on the brakes, but with a mutual fund, that is not necessarily the case. In bull markets, sometimes mutual funds will do better.2007-10-11
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Vertex One - Based in Vancouver and manage about $1 billion in capital. Has about a 10-year track record, which is quite long for a hedge fund. Use a multi-strategy approach. A lot of what they did at the beginning was “merger arbitrage”. Experts in this trade. Have also done well in the resource space in the last few years. Have a limit and can only short 15% in the portfolio. Well managed.2007-10-11
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Salida Multi-Strategy Hedge - Have done a fantastic job. Started the fund in 2001. Will be more aggressive than Vertex One. Generally will be less than 100% net market exposure, but will be more when needed. Very good in the mid to small-cap space.2007-10-11
PAST TOP PICKA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020(A Top Pick July 6/06.Up 19.4%.) Epic Limited Partnership - Have very good risk controls but are also very good stock pickers in the small to mid cap space. Started the fund in 2000 and had double-digit returns in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Up 66% in 2003.2007-10-11
PAST TOP PICKA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020(A Top Pick July 6/06. Up 17.78%.) Sprott Opportunites - The manager, Jean Tardiff, has a real aversion to risk. Currently up 15% year to date. Has averaged about 30% a year for the last few years.2007-10-11
PAST TOP PICKA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020(A Top Pick July 6/06. Up 14.15%.) Goodwood Fund-A has no resource compared to most funds. Prefers consumer-based stocks.2007-10-11
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Front Street Canadian Hedge Fund - Manager has compounded money at almost 20% over 20 years. Great product. It will be resourced based, but will be in other areas also. When market gets a bit toppy, instead of short positions, he will build up cash. About one quarter of their own money is in the fund.2007-10-11
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020BluMont’s Hirsch Performance – Fund – Veronica Hirsch has run this since 1998 and has basically doubled the market. Fee structure is very good. One of the only funds that has no management fee. She takes 20% of the profit if she makes money for you. $25,000 minimum.2007-10-11
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Dynamic Income Opportunities Fund -One of the best income trust managers in the country. Not necessarily income trusts, but anything that will generate income, so there is real estate, real estate securities, high yielding common stocks, etc. In the past year he is up around 31%.2007-10-11
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Picton Mahoney Hedge Funds - Manages about $4 billion, so there is lots of information flow. Mainly mid-to large cap on the mutual funds and on the hedge funds they can take positions in smaller companies. Performance has been absolutely fantastic in the hedge fund. Mutual fund has been great too. The hedge fund will probably close in the next couple of weeks.2007-10-11
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Chou Funds - Mr. Chou has been rated fund manager of the decade in the past. He is not a hedge fund, but he does run a more flexible mutual fund strategy. He will build up the cash a lot and if he doesn't see value in the market, he won't invest. Doesn't think he shorts or uses any other hedge fund strategies.2007-10-11
CommentA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Trapeze Asset Management – These are value managers, so they have a lot of capital preservation as far as their mandate is concerned. They do invest in small to mid cap stocks. Very opportunistic. They do have some proprietary stuff, which tells them what kind of risk there is in the market, which has been very good for them. Have done a good job.2007-10-11
N/AA Comment -- General Comments From an ExpertA Commentary0.020Tonight's talk was on hedge "Funds" which are not traded on the North Anerican Exchanges, so there are no stocks to show. Sorry!2006-07-06
